Well after further inspection that is one way to make it work but I don't think it's the proper way because HDMI doesn't work either

Using the factory charger cable with no extension cable did nothing different, it still doesn't work

I had my 8100 put in my new car the other day and had something like this happen..
Put the USB cable on the USB2 , pluged in the phone (that worked before in the old car) , and nothing happened
after some trial and error, I used a different USB cable and IT WORKED , I'm thinking the other one my have only allowed for charging, no data...
so try another cable ....
