Mine locks up quite a bit here in AZ. First question is: Does this firmware effect the By-Pass (Flasher Unit). May sound odd but I'd rather deal with some boot up issues from time to time rather than the unit being locked again.

I was going to ask the same question. I was thinking about updating anyway. Probably will get a new HD and image the Z2ish upgrade. But I would LOVE to get my unit to stop freezing. Either way, if it DOES include the bypass "fix", then I'm certain that the 2-wire method still works. I'm gonna try it I think. I'll let you know ther results.

I wouldn't worry about the bypass. I did the Z2 mod with a new 80GB HD and have no issues at all playing DVD's while driving.

actually I did the 2 wire bypass when I had the Z1 so for me didn't need to do anything.

Guess I'm lucky as I only had the unit lock up onces and that was about a 1yr ago.

I guess I'm a little confused, I haven't been on the site in about a year and a half since I installed my Z1 the flasher by-pass unit so please bare with me. I decided to get back on to check out what people were saying about the new firmware. If I install the firmware and the flasher unit no longer works, what then?

then you just do the 2 wire bypass. also do the Z2 upgrade as well if you want.

Z2 upgrade? Sorry it's been a while since I was on this site. I guess I could search but just a quick rundown would be great. I'm not a tech savy guy by the way so if you are refering to that whole deal of hooking my Z1 HD to my computer, that's not going to happen. Thanks for your help. I can handle the 2 wire deal tho.

I have never experienced the lockup issue and even though I live in MI with a moderate climate, I have spent time in the past few years in the desert during July, with the temps have hit over 110, and I have never experienced a lockup.

So, I'm going to file this email away following this suggestion from Pioneer.

"If you are not experiencing any lock-up or freezing issues currently, there is no need to take action at this time because the one-time fix to resolve the issue will be available if an AVIC-Z1 or AVIC-Z2 later experiences the issue and because your system may never experience the issue."

Guess I believe in the old saying, if it is not broke, don't fix it. :D

Those guys with the overheat lock issue should be chiming in soon after they have installed this firmware update.

Luckily, mine does not freeze.

I'm kind of in a Catch22 about installing the firmware. Looks like if I do install the firmware to help with the heat related lock-ups, my flasher by-pass will no longer work and I will have to pull the unit to ground 2 wires. It's freakin 108 degrees today and there is no way I'm doing it untill the temp outside drops (month or so). I'm gonna wait it out and see how this thing works itself out. I think it's just a half ass software solution to a hardware issue anyway.

with the 2 wire bypass you don't need to do anything when you start ur car. just go and enjoy, man 108!!!

I'm in San Diego and to me its very hot here. hit 100 the other day. Can't wait to move back to the Bay Area.

Borrow a light and do it in the garage at night. Takes about two minutes to do once you have the deck out

Borrow a light? That's funny, I think. Garage is still at least 90-100 even at night. I'll wait it out at least a few weeks and see if people see a difference. Thanks

K. How bout a fan and a light? It should literally take you minutes unless your car is difficult to work on. Or wait til winter, whatever works

so i got the email from pioneer the other day about the firmware update that should stop my z2 from freezing up. in the instructions it just says to burn it onto a cd-r. i know on the bypass update disc, the avics didn't recognize cd's burned by windows. i used nero for the last update, so in what format do i burn this firmware update? as an image? data cd? any ideas?

Posted Sep 17, 2007 · 05:55 UTC#18

once u have extract the file, just burn it as a data cd

Posted Sep 17, 2007 · 22:14 UTC#19

:!: I just did this and now my Z2 is f*cked up. :!:

I popped the disk in and my Z2 went to a black screen with progress bars and started copying files, finished, and now it just keeps rebooting.

It starts booting and right after the "starting pioneer car navigation" I get "Starting program update" and then "Program update failed - rebooting" and it's an endless loop. I took the cd out and it does the same thing.

Sh*t. Now I've got no tunes. Guess I'll go grab a 12 pack and try and figure out how to image this spare drive I have next to me...

I think my hard drive was failing anyways, It would not boot up after work today and it was 55 out... probrably 70 in the car.

If I put a new drive in my unit it's obviously not going to work because there's nothing on it, but can I download the CNDV-700HD disk (if I can find it), pop that in and reload the drive?

Damnit this sucks

Same thing happened to me. I guess you tried to update it while it was stuck on the pioneer screen. Well until your hard disk cools off it wont go back the main pioneer screen. So what i did was i parked my car in the garage left the car on for about 20 minutes and just let the cool air circulate and there it was back on the main pioneer screen. I learned to be patient cause i was freaking out.

Now what my question is.. i tried burning this update on 4 cds as a data disk but it is still not working. So what is the trick behind this?

Posted Sep 18, 2007 · 03:07 UTC#21

just to make sure but when you unzip it n extract to a folder. U will see 1 folder name AVICZ1_HD1 and a DAT file named Basefile.DAT

burn those 2 as a data cd and make sure there is nothing else other then the 2 items. also make sure that you are burning it as mode-1 format. it should be by default but check anyways.

Make sure you download the correct one Z1 or Z2 just in case.

OK yes there is only 2 items on the cd. Now i am using the default settings that is on nero. So i am still unable to get it to recognize on the z2.

try burning to a different disc and if its really hot where your at pull the HD out and cool it down then try the update.

its probably more the disc then the heat

OK I have an AVIC-Z2

I live in DC. An my Z2 locks up all the time. I have had it installed about 2 months. It started locking up after a long drive, so I assumed it was heat. then again and again it happened. I do have the patch with the two wire grounded installed. Today I drove 5 mins away in 65 degree weather and it locked up again!!! I was very upset so I called Pinoneer and learn about the patch! I have just installed it on my system. It did the updating screen for 92 updates. Then it the loop of saying how the updates failed. It did this about 10 times or so before going to another update screen for just 1 update. Then it rebooted just as it should have. I check the version numbers as I was told to in the instrustions and all is correct. It seems to be fine, but I am at work now and I have not really tested it yet. I will let you all know what I find.
