  1. In case others are wondering as well, Pioneer support says the Pandora button is only active when the phone is connected via USB cable. But we can start Pandora on the phone when not connected with the cable and control it via the head unit. A bit confusing, but now it's clear.

What? That is total nonsense.    I use Pandora on my commutes every day on my 8100, and it isnt plugged into the USB. As a matter of fact, my phone is in my lunch bag and stays in there till i get to work.   I have it set up where, if i plug my phone into USB, it auto-starts Android-Auto.  You should call back and thank Support for lying to you.

  2. I have a 4100NEX and MotoX 2nd Gen on Verizon and ran into similar problems at first.  Ended up wiping data for Android Auto, Google Play Services, and Google App and tried at least three different cables.  Probably a little overkill but I finally got it working after a frustrating 30 minutes, but now it works flawlessly.

Also noticed my phone needs to be unlocked before it connects.  I tried setting up the NEX as a "trusted device" but the way Pioneer pairs the device messes it up.  Hopefully this gets fixed eventually.

Buy a Motorola KeyLink. It works great as a SmartLock device. I keep it on my keychain. or you can just throw the keylink in your glovebox. battery lasts quite a few months on it (not the one year they claim tho)

  3. So based on the conversation here I ordered the Best Skins Ever, I thought it's a bit pricey for a piece of plastic, but when it arrived I was stumped – watching the installation videos showing a clean and flat kitchen table and I thought how on earth should I put this on an installed 8100NEX? With water dripping down on the AC controls and everything else below?

Maybe I'm missing something, your suggestions are welcome.

First of all, keep some paper towels easily accessible. Spray some clean soapy water generously on the screen like you are cleaning it, and spray some on the sticky side of the protector.apply and adjust the plastic protector, and squeege out excess water and the air bubbles with a credit card or similar.  do it slowly and carefully and it will work

  4. Is the cable you are using just a charging cable, or is it both a data & charging cable? Don't come back and say its the OEM cable that came with your phone.  You need to read the manual. Make sure the cable you have is a data cable, not just a charging cable.  If you need a new one, you can get a Monoprice or Anker micro-USB data cable on Amazon with prime shipping for a couple of bucks.

  5. On the 8100, I have to hols down the SRC button on the remote control for a couple of seconds to turn it off.  Then I press the Mode button to blank the screen.  Maybe it's the same on the 7100?

Really?? I didn't know you could blank the screen on the 8100!  lol I have to try that tomorrow morning.

Does the 7100 come with a remote? I didnt think it did.

  6.

I contacted Pioneer customer/Tech support regarding this issue. I am told that  "Android Auto cannot connect right now. When it is safe to do so, please check your Android phone."  means that my phone is not supported. Tech support tells me that they get this same question all the time and they say it could mean one of the following 1) my provider (T-Moble) in my area does not support Android auto 2) My device is not supported by Android Auto. Which is crazy I think because I have a Nexus 5, google's flagship phone and Tmobile ("the uncarrier") and I am based on central Texas. I somehow can't believe pioneer tech-support's explanation.  When I connect my Nexus 10 tablet for example, it display a message saying this device is not supported, so "Android Auto cannot connect.."  message should mean something else.

Is there anyone on this forum who got Android Auto working with Nexus 5, T-Mobile in the central Texas area?

They lied to you. A service provider has nothing to do with this.  I have both a Nexus 5 and Nexus 6, both work flawlessly with Android Auto (oh and yes I use T-Mobile also), Did you update your N5 to Lollipop?

  7. Thanks for sharing!  I'm glad to see the custom Skin worked well for you.  This is the perfect application for it.  We noticed a couple people ordered the same size custom screen protector for the same device so we decided to make it easy and add this to our catalog as a standard product.

I'll avoid being spammy and posting a link but you can find it in the Other>Car Electronics category or a quick search for Pioneer will bring it right up.  It's just available in matte for now so if anyone wants it in glossy just let us know.

    Cheers!

This is great news! Thanks Michael!

  8. I know you tried a bunch of different cables for the phone, but maybe its the clarion adapter you purchased?

I did something similar to you. I have an '08 Expedition, and i removed the cigarette lighter outlet at the bottom of the dash by the shifter.  I installed these two parts from Chevy, a USB outlet with a little door on it.   The nice part of this item is, is that there is no cable permanently attached to the back of it, and it isn't a proprietary harness on the back.  It is a MicroUSB on the back to connect with the head unit.  so if the cable between the plug and headunit ever go bad, i can just switch out the cable cheap and easy,

Look at this site for pics, but I bought these two on eBay for about $15-20 cheaper.

  9. 1. why do you need vss? MAP is very accurate without vss.

Driving through tunnels, driving through areas with thick foliage/big tree coverage, driving through hilly or mountainous areas, driving through areas with skyscrapers (like Manhattan).  I live in NYC, and I experience all of these, the skyscrapers and tunnels around Manhattan, the thick spring and summer foliage in the suburbs, and the mountainous areas of upstate NY, New England PA, etc.

All off these areas I get marginal or no GPS satellite acquisition.  VSS being hooked up makes the accuracy without GPS signals so much better

  10. I have a Nexus 6 phone.  My installation is a little more involved.  I have a Google Chromecast stick plugged into the HDMI plug in my 8100NEX.  I use the hotspot feature on my phone, and can watch Netflix, Hulu, or many other apps that can "cast" right on my headunit. I understand the long shopping trips, thats why i set it up like that lol

  11. I cannot explain the Appradiolive parts because I have never used them.

Any reason why you want to MHL your phone screen to the Nav unit?  I actually prefer just Android Auto.  I have no need to use the actual screen of my phone while driving.  To have my text messages read to me, and Google Now integration with the headunit is perfect for me.  But we all know each person has different results, thats why I was asking what you were looking for out of it.

Of course if someone is in the truck with me, i dont have my text messages read to me ;)
