  1. So after the update, using USB1, cant get the CarPlay icon to show. The phone pops up with the CarPlay logo, the radio shows a brief message saying "attempting to connect to Apple CarPlay" then goes away and I never get access to CarPlay. Settings under SmartPhone are set to USB and Carplay is enabled. What am I doing wrong? NEX5000. Not using the VGA adapter obviously.

Just a thought... Have you tried restarting the car and rebooting your iPhone?

  2. 30min in my case

WOW!!! Mine took all of 5-10 minutes!  No issues at all!  What unit and what iPhone do you have?  Was there anything else on the USB drive or SD card that you used?  Did you copy ONLY the folder within the parent folder to the drive?

  3. UPDATE: Dropbox has shutdown the links due to excessive traffic...Sorry!

Here is the 1.06 (CarPlay) update file for the 8000NEX ONLY!!! DO NOT use it with any other model of NEX!!! READ and FOLLOW the instructions (also linked below). I don't want to be held responsible for anyone bricking their units!

Also, I ask that no one on this forum shares the link... let's keep it to this community of enthusiests. I don't want my Dropbox account being shut down due to high traffic! :-)

Mods, if posting this link violates any forum polices, let me know and I will remove it.

UPDATE: Dropbox has shutdown the links due to excessive traffic... Sorry!

  4. The updates are model specific... If you find it hosted somewhere, make sure you download the correct update for your NEX model! That said, I found it odd that the zip file for the 8000 correctly says 8000, but the folder inside the uncompressed folder says it is for the 5000! Threw me off at first, but Pioneer's install instructions say this also. Anyway, I can verify that it DOES work with the 8000!

  5. <p>

I was able to download the firmware. Slow but I got it.

"UPDATE: I also tried AppRadio mode with the HDMI/Lightning connector. Neither CarPlay nor AppRadio work with the HDMI/Lightning Connector."

    So AppRadio is broken?

AppRadio seems broken to me... Not sure if this is intentional or a bug, but I can't imagine Pioneer allowing such a bug to slip through. My guess is that it is intentional, possibly due to technical (or contractual) limitations related to implementing CarPlay.

  6. Guys, how does this work if using Pandora as your music source? Can you select Pandora from the head unit then go into Car Play and use maps with no interruption or interference?

Yes, Pandora plays while in CarPlay. In fact, you can even tap the "Now Playing" icon in CarPlay and it shows song info and album art, and allows basic play/pause/next track functionality of Pandora in CarPlay. SiriusXM does NOT show up here. I'm guessing the source has to be coming from the iPhone, but I haven't tried a CD or USB/SD music.

UPDATE: My SiriusXM iPhone app also plays through the "Now Playing" mode in CarPlay. I'm guessing "Now Playing" mirrors whatever is playing on the iPhone, and provides controls when available.

  7. More notes...

-No matter where you are in the NEX's interface, activating Siri takes you to CarPlay's interface. CarPlay then handles calls, texts, etc.

-My steering wheel buttons for answer and end calls no longer work. I have a Maestro SW. I'll call iDataLink and see if there is a software update. (UPDATE: the buttons are working now)

-AppRadio is no where to be found, either on the home screen or the menu. It appears CarPlay totally replaced AppRadio for iPhone users. This will be good news for some and bad news for others. (UPDATE: AppRadio WORKS!! Don't forget to set the connection type to Digital AV Adapter ;-) )

UPDATE: I also tried AppRadio mode with the HDMI/Lightning connector. Neither CarPlay nor AppRadio work with the HDMI/Lightning Connector.

UPDATE 2: CarPlay only replaces the built in Bluetooth phone interface when the phone is plugged in to the Lightning cable. This should be obvious, since CarPlay requires the Lightning cable to work, but I wanted to make sure. Steering wheel answer and end buttons work fine for regular Bluetooth calling. This makes me think that since CarPlay is processed by the phone instead of the NEX, the steering wheel answer and end buttons can not interface with CarPlay... That would be a bummer.

UPDATE 3: Under Smartphone settings, you can enable and disable CarPlay. AppRadio is listed as an available feature. I tried disabling CarPlay to see if it would allow me to use AppRadio. It didn't. I'd love to hear if anyone else is able to use AppRadio with their iPhone post-update.

UPDATE 4: The steering wheel answer and end buttons are now working! Don't know what I did to fix them!

UPDATE 5: AppRadio WORKS!! Don't forget to set the connection type to Digital AV Adapter ;-)

  8. The good news is that music playing in the CarPlay Music app is ALSO playing in the NEX USB music app simultaneously, and switching between the two is extremely fast and easy. Just tap the physical "Home" button, and tap the "Now Playing" icon on the NEX home screen. Once you do this, you can tap the physical "Mode" button to quickly switch between the two!

  9. For people who are using it, when you play music, does it show the album art in the background?

Album art is there, but it is very dim, and it fills the whole screen... In fact it crops the tops and bottom of the album art. Not real happy with this solution... I prefer the native NEX USB music player presentation.

EDIT: When I say dim, I mean REALLY dim! I don't think a person could see it on a bright day. On the recent videos, artwork was probably there, but was just too dim to pick up on camera.

  10. You can still use your phone's interface while CarPlay is active!!! The CarPlay logo only pops up for a few seconds when it is initially loaded, but it quickly disappears, revealing full access to your phone. I was under the impression that the phone itself wouldn't be usable when CarPlay is active, but I'm happy to be wrong!

  11. I just installed iOS 8.0.2 (yes, I am brave!). It seems to have fixed all the Bluetooth issues I was having between my iPhone 6 and NEX. Hopefully it won't be a temporary thing... I'd love to hear if others have similar success with 8.0.2!

  13. Earlier this morning, Pioneer UK also tweeted this...

"@PioneerUK: @Kimberley92_ For iPhone it's called CarPlay, were sorry but obstacles out of our hands, have pushed CarPlay closer to an autumn release"

That sounds like confirmation that the delay is on Apple's end, but as you said, it sounds like Apple is almost there! Unfortunately CarPlay has all the other bug fixes held up too. At least Pioneer UK is talking a bit... More than I can say about Pioneer USA.

  14. Why would Pioneer (or Apple) delay until iOS 8 is released when Carplay on the NEX may not even support iOS 8?

Based on my experience with AppRadio mode on the NEX, my bet is that Pioneer's Carplay implementation is being delayed due to showstopper bugs.

You are misquoting the press release. The release says that AppRadio may not support iOS 8. It says nothing about CarPlay. AppRadio is Pioneer's app software. CarPlay is Apple's baby and Apple's software... It is baked into iOS and is actually run by the iPhone rather than the head unit. Pioneer simply has to interface with it.

  15. Here is the way I see it, and why Apple is likely holding off until iOS 8... Carplay is baked into iOS. CarPlay can only be updated when the iPhone's iOS is updated. Apple has probably fixed some bugs and made improvements in the iOS 8 version of CarPlay. Since there were already delays, they probably want to just release the latest iOS 8 version of CarPlay to the masses, rather than the iOS 7.1 version which was released months ago. I agree with the sentiment that if Pioneer does not release CarPlay alongside iOS 8 (or shortly there after), then there are some serious issues.
