does anyone know if using the steering wheel controls from my factory deck would be possible to change the volume or possible even songs and stuff on a D3?

So I tried to get my D3(paid for and everything) put in my 2001 passat today and The guys at Best Buy that were installing it told me that it couldn't be done. I find this hard to believe. They told me needs a harness that doesn't exist. Does anyone know how to make this work? thanks for any advice Brian
