  1. I have installed three Z series head units in my cars over the years.  Once in a 2003 Expedition, once in my RAV4 and once in my 2009 Porsche Cayenne.  I still own all three cars.  They are sort of unbeatable.

I just bought a new Toyota Highlander and intended on getting one with no radio so I could install another Z2 but the one that came with the Toyota looked so nice...  Boy, was I wrong.

I am now considering replacing the $4000 upgrade on my Toyota with yet another Pioneer Z2.

First of all, I am completely spoiled with the Bypass.  I completely forgot that the new unit would be locked out when driving.  What a pain!  The bypass concepts for the ENTUNE units are really stupid.

There are numerous other things that are better on the Z but I know I am preaching to the choir on this forum.

Anyway, all I can say is that the new units don't hold a candle to the AVIC Z Series.  I am pretty sure I will be replacing the expensive factory unit in my Highlander Limited with a used Z in the not to distant future.

  2. I know it has been a long time since my original post, but my work takes me away for months at a time. I am now back to making this installation.

I found an adapter from kit from Metra that is making the job easier. Its the Metra 70-9003

The adapter is normally for a VW/AUDI/BMW and isn't listed for the Cayenne at all. Lucky for me, my local shop guys were willing to just dig around and found a match.

I now have in my possession, a nice used Z3 that plugs into my 2009 Cayenne. I have a non-Bose version Cayenne.

I purchased the HUR 955 MOST HUR 955 Kit from NAV-TV and it is on hand.

The Metra kit handles the four speakers, ground and battery. Nothing else is available on the standard Porsche connector.

I was able to run the Z3 by manually supplying power to the ACC (red) wire on the back of the Z3.

Good documentation on the NAV-TV HUR 955 tells me that if I hook the CAN LO and CAN HI that the NAV-TV adapter will supply me with the other signals I need for proper operation of my Z3

    HUR 955 --- Z3

    -------------------------------------------

12v switched out --- ACC (red)

    Illuminatioin out --- ILL (orange/white)

VSS out --- Car Speed Input (pink)

    Reverse --- Reverse Purple

This all seems like a bunch of money (The NAV-TV Adapter costs around $500) just for those signals. I think all I really need is the ACC and Illumination signal. I would think I could find those signals the old fashion way.

Does anyone have any advice at this point. I am ready to finish this endless job.

Also, there is so little room in the radio cavity on the Cayenne. Its going to be hard enough to find a place to put the Bluetooth and XM modules. If anyone has suggestions for that, I would love it as well.

    Thanks!

  3. I have the HURR955 coming but now find out that the factory radio is NOT the fiberoptic type. The guys from NAV-TV tell me that I will still need the HURR955 but that I will have to wire it myself. I hope it is for more than the antenna adapter. Not so sure what that might be... Those things are $500

So far, I have not been able to find any connectors for the 2009 Cayenne radio connector. I guess I may have to wire it myself. Does anyone know where I can find the pinout / colorcode for my 2009 Cayenne w/o the Bose Factory radio?

    Greg

  4. I want to install my Z3 in a 2009 Porsche Cayenne. It looks like I need something like the NAV-TV MOST HUR955 Fiber Optic interface. Its pretty expensive, but no problem if it is what I need.

Anybody had any experience with Z series in a Porsche Cayenne?

What about the steering wheel controls?

Seems there is also a standard double din dash kit available (which is also pretty expensive). Again, no problem if it works....

    I found this stuff...

  5. I had a Z2 in my 2003 Expedition for several years, it was stolen so the insurance company replaced it with a Z3. Then I took my Expedition to my mountain home where it is now in semi-retirement.

I now drive a 2002 Rav4. I found a nice Z2 on EBAY for $600 with everything I thought I needed. Now installed, I called XM to have my license (plus traffic) moved from my Expedition to my Rav4. I thought I would just move it back when I was at my mountain home. After all, I can't drive both cars at the same time -- they live in different states.

Almost everything seems to be OK with the "new" Z2. Looks like the previous owner had done the Bypass. The mute wire had already been moved, so I grounded it and and the brake wire. Also, I can operate the Navi while driving.

I have BLUETOOTH ND-BT1, XM GEX-P10XMT, and IPod Adapter CB-IB100.

My only problem is that I get no TRAFFIC -- I double checked with XM and they resent the signal so I should be getting it.

Even though the XM Radio plays normally and I get all normal channels, under INFORMATION, the XM Status display shows:

    Status: Not Connected

    Signal: No Signal

    Radio ID: (blank)

    Any Ideas?

    Also, I show V 2.000 or Rel 02/2007

  6. I just got back from lunch today to find my Expedition broken in to and my AVIC-Z2 ripped out of the dash. All the accessories are still there and it looks like they just unplugged everything.

I had everything, IPOD interface, Bluetooth, Steering Remote, everything. I think that stuff is all OK.

Most important of all, I had the Bypass Hack.

My insurance will replace the unit and I was thinking I should buy a Z3.

Should I buy the Z3 instead of another Z2?

We can do the bypass on the Z3, right?

Will all my old accessories work in the z3?

Thanks for the support on this site. I appreciate everyone that helps out here.

  7. This may or may not be the same for your model but take a look.

    Ford_2003_Expedition_C2188c.jpg

If you have an unused connector that looks like this, it may be right for you.

On the Eddie Baur with Factory Navigation, this is connector C2188c. It is located right behind the Factory Nav/Radio. Yours is probably different.

    Pin 5 is the Tach

    Pin 10 is Reverse

Pin 11 is control I am using for steering wheel controls

If this is not correct, let me know and I will see if my manual has your setup in it. Maybe it is different.

  8. There is a lot of confusing information about the 03 Expedition out there. Apparently there are a few versions around so the information I have may not be the same for your SUV.

Do you have the Eddie Baur with the factory NAV already installed? If so, I can probably help.

However I did get everything working except for the sub woofer. That I still need to work out.

THERE ARE NO PLUG KITS that work for everything. You will need to use a plug kit from a different year for some lines and cut wires for everything else.

Everything does appear at the old NAV Radio connectors. Backup, Tach, Speakers, Power, Etc.

  9. My Z2 installation in my 2003 Expedition is almost complete.

I purchased just about everything I could including the CD-UB100 USB Adapter.

I was really looking forward to hooking up a usb drive and keeping a bunch of music on the system. BUT - Two Big Problems.

    1. Not enough power to run the Western Digital USB2 drive.

    2. If I use a "thumb drive", which works, the Z2 does not read out any of the file or folder names. Just numbers.

Does anyone know if there is some way that the files need to be listed on the drive so the titles and folders can be browsed with the Z2? I was hoping that it would work like it does when you use a CD with MP3s in folders.

    Greg

  10. I had the same connector problem with my 2003 Eddie Baur Expedition. I replaced the factory navigation system with the Z2. I purchased 4 different connector sets that didn't fit anything. [scosche and Metra]

Seems that in the first model year of 2003 body style, there were the early and late wiring setups and even another one that is a hold over from earlier models. I finally had to drive down to a local shop where some nice guys just kept going back to their store room until they found me connectors that would fit.

The speaker and power connectors that finally fit said 1998 and up on the package.

I still don't have a connectors to mate to my sub, steering wheel or rear seat video player. I thought I had just about used up my favors at that shop.

After purchasing the connectors they found me, I give them all the connectors that everyone else had sold me as a little thank you. They thought that was pretty funny and were happy.

Also, based on wire colors I found here and elsewhere, I cut into 4 different wires in the right hand kick harness looking for the backup wire. Still no luck. None of the normal 2003 colors match yet.

I am still looking for the following:

    VSS Wire

    Backup Wire

    Rear Seat Video Connector

    Steering Wheel Connector

    Sub-Woofer Connector

However, even without these items, the Z2 is really GREAT. I love it.

For $15 I purchased a Ford 2003 wiring manual for the Expedition and Navigator from EBAY. Maybe I will have some luck with that.

  11. Don't ground the speed wire. Ground the parking brake and the extra wire you stuck in the "bypass" hole

Sorry, I mis-wrote. Yes the extra wire and the brake wire.

    [THIS ADDED LATER]

As suspected, when I was reinstalling the dash, I pulled out the "extra" wire and the system was not bypassed at all. I had re-used the "Mute" wire and it has a little connector that I used to extend the wire. It simple pulled out. It is now soldered.

I jumped the gun with my question and apologize for cluttering up this thread.

    Greg

  12. I spoke too fast...

I got back in the car with a DVD and a pad of paper prepared to take detailed notes. It seems that the entire 2-wire hack is no longer working. I just first noticed it on my bluetooth.

I am pretty sure the bypass was working right after I did the 2-wire hack. I will go back and make sure that the 2-wires are all still attached and grounded correctly. I am grounding the "extra wire" wire and the brake wire per the sticky and the link in the sticky

Also, I get a hand brake warning at boot.

    Greg

(corrected my mis-statement about grounding the speed wire)

  13. I wish I had seen your reply before driving to Best Buy last night and finding that they only carry METRA and not Scosche.

I just want to get this job done on Saturday. Once I have my Expedition all torn apart, I won't have a car to go driving around looking for parts.

The guys that sold me my Z2 sold me the FDK9 which has no RCA connectors. Last night I ordered the FDK11 from the same guys. I will have both of them. I found conflicting info on the FDK11 fitting 2003. Its only $10 so who cares.

I will probably also go back to Best Buy and see if I can pick up the Metra 70-5519

Thanks to all for the help!

    Greg

  14. Here is the part number you need, it has both the main harness and sub harness. Scosche - FDK11B, you can get it at any Best Buy, Circuit, Car toys. Yes your expedition has a separate amp for your sub, on the sub harness be sure to connect the remote turn on lead. Its the blue/white wire.

When I go to the sites that sell the FDK11B they list it only for 2004 and later. Is that going to work with my 2003 Navigation unit?

  15. I think I have found just about everything I need here. Great forum!

The only thing I need to know is about hooking up the speakers.

I know I have a SUB in the rear and a speaker in each door. It looks to me like my new AVIC Z2 can only feed 4 speakers or 2 plus a Sub Woofer.

I was thinking I could use the speaker outputs on the Z2 for my 4 door speakers and then purchase a sub-woofer amp and connect my existing sub-woofer with an aftermarket sub-woofer power amp through the RCA output.

    Does this make sense?
