  1. FInally got a few pics of the Pioneer AVIC-6100NEX mounted in my 2014 Honda CR-V EX-L...notice how deep the unit sits, compared to the 5000 in my sig pic...

This is the 5000...notice the ridge around the unit is flat...

This is the 6100...notice the ridge around the unit takes a significant dip to the right of the buttons...

The local shop told me this is by design, if we raise the unit, the buttons would stick out past the dash surface.

Personally I think it is an ugly design, now that it is installed. But it is what it is.

  2. I know this might be hard, but it would be nice to know what updates are in each one.... going from 2015 Q2 to Q3 might not be worth $150, but going from 2015 Q2 to 2016 Q2 might be ....

I agree, yearly, no problem...quarterly, no thanks.

  3. The thing about Google and Apple is that they collect info about where you go, and I'm sure they use it to make money somehow.

THe unit in your car doesn't send that kind of info.  If it could I"m sure those maps would become free.   8)

I'm not sure about CarPlay, but Android Auto maps are VERY poor quality in comparison to the 8100 built in maps.

I only seem to use the AA maps because I can talk to my phone to get them.  I can't talk to the 8100 for navigation. This was something I had with the Kenwood 990HD I used to have.  It wasn't great, but something is better than nothing.   8)

I think the take away is to tolerate some whining from folks, including me, who are just not happy about being charged for map updates.

I wouldn't mind paying $100 for lifetime map updates. That's reasonable. But $149 for every quarterly update is not acceptable.

Saying "get over it" is a little condescending. ;)

  4. it still takes time to code them properly, thus a cost for the company.  It's not like they just make themselves.   8)

That's a fair assessment and likely a lucrative business model for them. :)

However, Apple CarPlay Maps is updated continuously, and we don't get charged. So is Android Auto maps. So is Waze maps.

So I don't buy into the "they don't update themselves; you've gotta pay" bit.

Someone has a "lock" and is able to milk their customers, and they will continue to do so, until a better solution comes along.

Trust me, once CarPlay Maps and/or Android Auto Maps have the features I need, Pioneer can shove their maps fee up their CAN bus.

Sorry for being snarky, but I have very little tolerance for companies that rape their customers.

PS, this is why I hold on to my Dual XGPS160, so CarPlay Maps can have real GPS...connecting to a CarPlay unit doesn't solve the A-GPS issue. ;)

    Thanks,

    Don

  5. I swapped out my AVIC-5000NEX for a AVIC-6100NEX and I couldn't be happier.

Except for one thing...the head unit is about 3/8" deeper in the mount than the previous head unit.

Comparing the two head units, it looks like the 6100 has a higher mounting ridge, so it sits deeper.

I went to Crutchfield and they don't mention different mounting depths for the unit.

Anyone have a 6100 mounted in a 2014 CR-V? Do you have the same problem?

Here is what I found on Crutchfield, didn't see any alternate mounting depth options.

I'll try to get/post a picture of the 6100 so you can see what I mean.

    TIA,

    Don

  6. Ok to clear some things up.

Currently there are 3 kinds of carplay scenarios.

    1. Carplay second display mode. Currently Apple only. Custom interface created by the phone customized for the app. This is how all the apple first party apps work with the exception of the podcasts app.

    2. Carplay media player apps. These send data to some kind of carplay music app that the phone has. The interface for all these apps is the same. The best way to understand this is that it is a kind of media remote control for your open app. It can read metadata from the app, scan playlists, artists saved, whatever, and the developer can create custom buttons for the app media control app if they wish, like in iHeartRadio you have a like this song, and a bookmark button. In the podcasts app you can go back and forth by 30 seconds.

    3. non supported app control. This only allows for play/pause and fast forward/rewind. Any non supported media app of any kind uses this. No custom API required.

    Few other things.

    1. Any sound coming from your phone will go through carplay.

    2. Your phone is not locked out while using carplay. So that means...

    3. You can run ANY unsupported app while in carplay, including waze and google maps, but they will not display on the headunit. They will however send their audio through the car speakers, use the car microphone, and display on the iPhone if they are the active app on screen.

    4. Apple has not yet opened the APIs to allow more powerful apps to be used in carplay, but when the original iPhone launched the only apps they ever allowed were Web apps until they had a good plan forward. So I doubt this situation is forever.

    5. Any audio source can be used at the same time as carplay that is supported on the iPhone with only one exception and that is bluetooth audio. It is disabled on the Pioneer while in carplay. However, the USB 2 can accept another iPhone or android device, the HDMI port works, as does the aux or any other port, or the HD radio or the Satellite radio if you have that module for your Pioneer.

    6. To do this simply press the home button on the Pioneer, or the virtual one in carplay and then the Pioneer button on the display, and then from the source menu click the audio source you want to listen to. You can also go back to carplay to use apple maps check your messages or take phone calls. The Pioneer radio will happily mix all sources together. You can even hot swap between the control interface and Carplay by pressing the mode button.

    7. This also works in Reverse. If you have a NAV unit (5000-8100) you can run the built in Nav while using carplay to control your phone music and whatnot. Again the headunit happily mixes all sources.

Hope all this info Helps! :)

Only one navigation option can run at a time. If you're using NEX navigation, and switch to CarPlay Maps, NEX will cancel the route. Same vice versa. I found this to be a really well thought out function/behavior. There are times I'm using NEX navigation but I want to switch to CarPlay Maps as I enter a large city, and I just tell SIRI where I want to go, and it'll cancel the NEX navigation and take you right into CarPlay Maps.

  7. what do you mean???? I ordered mine from a reputable stereo shop, received it, installed it myself with no issues, whats this trap you speak of? lol

Sorry for the rant LOL what i meant is iDataLink have promised support for i-Mid for a year now but have not delivered. So I've been sitting on the RR waiting for what turned out to be vaporware.

  8. Hmmm...so does this mean we should see updates to CarPlay soon? ;)

This year, the winner of the Technology of the Year Feature Award was awarded to Apple CarPlay. "Apple's CarPlay represents the impact technology is having on our connected lives and brings an experience that is easy to use and enhances the lives of consumers who use this product" said Stephen Rouse, Autoblog's Director of Product and Technology.

  9. Today I drove to work listening to HD Radio (worth the price of upgrade from 5000>6100!), and got frustrated that holding down the L or R button on my steering wheel did not go to previous or next stations. I thought for sure something was broken.

So I switched to USB1/2 and found that tapping the L or R button worked fine going to previous or next song.

So out of curiosity I switched back to HD Radio and tried tapping the L or R button to see if a miracle happened.

Low and behold, yes, it worked!

No change was made to the PAD RP4-HD11. Nada. Zilch.

Since moving to the 6100. tapping the L or R button works with both HD Radio and USB1/2 (and presumably with CD).

    Little surprises. Wow.

  10. Finally got around to initiating the map updates. Its going fairly quickly, but then I have a pretty good connection.

I'm running VMWare Fusion 8 Pro on a MacBook Pro Retina 2015, with a 50M download pipe.

Its pretty simple, grab a USB stick, stick it in the car and run SyncTool (prepares the USB stick in under a minute). Then stick the USB stick in your PC and launch Naviextras Toolbox (free). It'll see the USB stick to verify your device, then you have the option to download updates. Updates are downloaded to the USB stick. When its done, take the USB stick to your car, stick it in and...<fill-in-the-blank-not-there-yet-LOL>. :)

  11. No it doesn't. You just need an SD or USB drive inserted and you can play mixtrax off of that once the music is playing. Mixtrax software is installed in the headunit.

Ahh...I'll have another look. I didn't see it when I installed the unit. But it was late.
