  1. I too am using VMWare Fusion with windows 7, and Windows 8.1(have both and use 7 for things like this) I installed 16 GB of ram in my MacBook and my Mac mini(really helps, I can dedicate 8 GB to Windows when running VMWare.)

I'm running a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014), which comes with 16GB of RAM. I usually give Windows 4GB.

Since the Naviextras Toolbox requirements page lists Windows 8, I did't bother with Windows 7, though I keep it handy.

  2. Not sure if I mentioned, I'm running Windows 8.1 64bit in VMWare Fusion 7 Pro.

To get this to work I needed to set USB compatibility to 2.0 before launching the VM.

Got the download onto the USB thumb stick.

Once I brought the USB thumb drive to the NEX, and went to the Sync section, it downloaded from USB>NEX just fine.

Not sure what it downloaded, but had to do with some updates for the unit; apparently I had the latest Maps already.

FWIW, I think it's ironic how Pioneer partners with a third party that wants to charge us $129 for NA maps that are "latest" from Q4 2013!

  3. I wonder if Pioneer's marketing team is getting the necessary oversight?

I feel like I spent $750 on a half baked product. Thank goodness for CarPlay.

Heck, Pioneer might just be looking at the dollars and cents.

Why spend on developing something users may not need/want?

I sent a message to Pioneer corporate, not expecting miracles, but someone should be told.

  4. I guess it's a start... but based on the reply I got and other experiences with other product support teams, I really have to wonder if they read the question :)

Offshored support are typically reading from a script, not necessarily the brighter tools in the shed (think McDonalds). Escalations might get you to someone with a clue.

  5. @joemamma1954 thanks, I was able to sync the AVIC-5000NEX to my 16GB USB 2.0 thumb drive, which was formatted Fat32.

When I brought it over to my PC, the thumb drive keeps disconnecting, then Naviextras Toolkit tosses up errors saying the data on the thumb drive couldn't be read.

So I took another 16GB USB 2.0 drive, also formatted Fat32, and got the same result.

The PC has no problem connecting the USB thumb drive, but Naviextras Toolkit seems to have a problem, so it keeps disconnecting it.

Getting. So. Much. Closer. But. Not. There. Yet. :)

  6. I went back to the shop to try to get the Off Hook and On Hook/Back buttons working again.

This time I stood there while the tech set things the way I liked, image below.

Those two buttons still don't work. Everything else works fine.

    Any clues?

    • 2014 Honda CR-V (came with Base head unit)
    • AVIC-5000NEX (1.08 firmware)
    • iDataLink Maestro RR with the following settings:

  7. Hi Don,

From the Nav Screen, tap the Settings icon (the one just above the Phone icon in the lower right-hand corner. After the Settings Menu opens, tap the icon in the lower right-hand corner (on the 6000NEX, it's to the right of the right arrow). On the 6000 there are two selections:

    Reset All Settings

    Factory Reset

I selected "Factory Reset" and as I said earlier, that resolved the issues I was having after the upgrade to v1.08.

Could you provide a link to the "Navitools" software. I searched using that term and could only find software for CADD products.

    Thanks,

    Joe M.

    Thanks!

I actually mis-spoke/typed, should have read "Naviextras":

  8. I dont think the make the gender changer you suggested. Looks like you will need to pull HU, i would then plug in usb extension that came with unit and run to glove compartment, that way you could unplug lightning cable temporarily for thumbnail drive. This way you would not have to pull every time. I have 2 usb extensions hooked up, 1 to dash where i took out cigarette lighter(usb1) and the other (usb2) into glove compartment with solid state drive. Makes it real easy to add or exchange drives, etc.

I have an AVIC-5000NEX and a 2014 Honda CR-V. The installer ran USB1 to the center console, tapped into the existing USB port in there. He ran an extension to USB2 into the glove box, so I can attach a USB thumb drive (or iPod or second iPhone).

Interesting thread, I wish I saw it a couple weeks ago, when the 45th day passed. I'm still wondering how I can connect a computer to the NEX, in order to use Naviextras Toolbox to back up my POIs/locations.

  9. You can disable carplay, but honestly, especially in the 8000 don't knock it till you try it. Carplay is awesome.

Awesome especially for a version 1.0 product. :)

Please feel free to submit CarPlay feedback here:

    https://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

I've submitted feedbac 30+ times (well, a mix of feedback and Bug Reports through the enterprise portal).

Apple is monitoring all feedback, even if they don't respond (they do respond to Bug Reports).

We're hoping Apple's elves are working on CarPlay 1.1 or 2.0 over the holidays...fingers crossed!

    Happy holidays!

  10. My apologies in advance, if this post comes across as hijacking this thread, I'll remove it or move it, not my intent. But the Waze and Android mentions caught my eye. :)

I don't have an answer as I have an AVIC-5000NEX and even though Pioneer markets it as being able to use AppRadio compatible apps, I've had zero success (any advice/links to other threads welcome). But I wanted to mention a few things regarding Waze and guess-timates on what might be coming down the pipe from Apple.

My understanding is Waze belongs to Google and there is no plan to allow it to run in CarPlay. Not sure how true that is, or whether it's just Google not wanting to submit Waze for review (#1) because they own it and are coming out with Android Auto (#2). I'd absolutely LOVE to be able to use Waze, but not if it costs me all the integration that CarPlay gives me. As an iPhone user who manages/supports thousands of Macs in enterprise, I'm interested in what Android Auto will bring, but not likely to switch. I love that there is competition though, hopefully that'll be the kick in the rear-end that Apple needs to get hot with CarPlay.

There hasn't been a lot out of Apple on any new developments, acknowledging bugs, etc., and the only place to submit feedback that will get back to the CarPlay team is through the iPhone feedback site (#3). Yes, I submitted a Feature Request asking for a CarPlay Feedback page. :)

Apple does all single feedback submitted, and I'm sure they've got a folder for all mine (30+). I'm hoping we get an early Christmas present...CarPlay 1.1 or 2.0. One can only hope.

I also with Google success with Android Auto, healthy competition is good for everyone. :)

  11. I now realize that a phone is not an audiophile device! :-P

Apple Lossless (is supported by iOS) and FLAC (is not supported by iOS) should give you the same quality, but I guess I see what you guys mean, the connector might be causing problems.

I wish I could open an Apple enterprise support request, to get straight answers. Unfortunately its not work related, and I don't want to get fired. Might be able to post to the Apple Developers site:

  12. The app update is out in the US now, our models ARE listed. Does that signify an imminent firmware update for the headunits? I sure hope so, there's still lots of bugs to be fixed.

Just curious, what's the firmware release cycle been so far on the CarPlay compatible NEX models? Yea I know there's only been one CarPlay firmware release so far. I mean firmware releases in general.

Guessing that even if Apple had to approve the CarPlay enabling firmware release schedule, Pioneer should still have a firmware release history in the NEX models that we can form a guess-timate. :)

  13. For the up-teenth (that's a number, no?) time, I lost all my AVIC-5000NEX map locations.

I'm not sure what to do, is there a way to back up locations to a microSD card?

I get how CarPlay is almost what we need it to be - but until we get current/max speed displayed, I spend most of my highway time on the native NEX map.

    Thoughts?

    Thanks,

    Don
