1. I already have a Z1 and a D3. They both route great in my area, sucks to live where you do I guess

Nothing to do with where you live. The software lacks many features that most other nav units have. One of the most basic features of a navigation system is to provide alternate routes. A Garmin lets you tell it not to take a road and it will route around that road. The Pioneer gives you options of 6 different alternate routes but it picks them. In the case I was referring to it proposed 6 routes but all took the non-existent bridge. Turns out there was another bridge (this one actually existed) just 4 miles north, but the Pioneer never gave me that option. Luckily I had my laptop with Street Atlas USA on it to show me the other bridge or I might still be on the banks of that river staring at my useless Pioneer.

That's poor software. Any navigation system should let you avoid certain roads.

  2. Looks pretty much like a kenwood D3. The question becomes do you want garmins 6 mil points of interest and 2 pre-outs or Pioneers 12 mil with 3 preouts and an ipod (so you can leave the nav disk in.) And who knows what Pioneer will come out this year to improve on even that

The bigger question is do you want a navigation system that works or do you want the Pioneer? The beautiful Z2 navigated me right into a river yesterday. You'd think it could figure out an alternate route since the "bridge" on its maps didn't exist. But you can't tell the Pioneer to avoid a specific road. Any Garmin will do that.

I had a Garmin portable before I put in the Z2 but I have to say the Pioneer navigation is pitiful compared to Garmin.

If you want Pioneer so badly I'll gladly sell my Z2.

  3. 1. The DNX7100 is not connected to the VSS wire, the unit determines your speed via it's link to the satellite(S), yes that's plural..

the speed is usually of by .5mph

See image at the time of this picture I had 10 sattelites I was recieving and sending my location too.

The VSS hookup is not for speed per se, it's for dead reckoning. I used to have a stand-alone Garmin, which I loved, but it did not have dead reckoning. Sounds like the Kenwood doesn't either, which is kind of surprising these days.

In case you're not familiar with it, dead reckoning uses a gyro and the speed input from the car to keep accurately routing even when you lose the satellite signal temporarily. My Z1, which I am seriously considering selling to get the Kenwood (I will never buy another Pioneer product after wasting money on the Z1), has that one advantage that it keeps routing even if the signal is interrupted.

  4. I have a Z1 and am considering selling it to get the Kenwood. I purchased a navigation system primarily for navigation. I'm a sales engineer and have to find customers in areas I don't know. As far as I'm concerned the audio in either Pioneer or Kenwood are excellent, and certainly good enough for me. But having switched from Garmin portable GPS to the Pioneer I can't believe how bad the Pioneer navigation is. To me, after the basic routing algorithms, the most important navi function is detour routing. After years of using Garmins I could not believe that Pioneer wouldn't let you detour by road or by distance. In my Garmin when I got stuck behind an accident I could say "detour by 1/2 mile" or "don't take this particular road" but my $2000 Z1 won't do either of these. Besides the poor bluetooth implementation and embarrassingly bad iPod interface the navigation is just bad.

Anybody want to buy a used Z1? I would gladly sell mine to buy a Garmin-based Kenwood.

  5. As for the DVD portion, I don't know for sure that it would just be a software change. The D3 and 5900DVD are both $1000 and they play mp3 DVD so I think its just an outdated drive in the Z1/2

This is a legal decision by Pioneer. I read where they stated they could not control piracy if they supported MP3s on the Z1. Ripping an audio CD they can claim the owner must have had an original. They simply don't want to get sued by the RIAA.

  6. I had a Garmin before buying a new truck with a double din opening and putting in the Z1. The Pioneer unit is nice in that it is an all-in-one unit, but the Garmin blew it out of the water in navigating. The Pioneer is feeble at best.

If Kenwood ever releases the double din that you can get in Japan over here I would dump the Pioneer in a minute and get the Kenwood. Their navigation is made by Garmin.

  7.
Something else to add to the list of whyners? The Z1 Blows away everything in the Navi market Bar-None.
Spoken like either someone who has never used another GPS or a Pioneer employee. I've used Garmin, Navman, and Alpine and from a pure navigation point of view the Z1 doesn't come close.
If the Z1 was to do everything that people whyne about it doesn't do it would cost over 5k. Would it sell then?
Actually most, if not all, the complaints people have about the Z1 are software or policy issues. Pioneer doesn't support MP3's on the hard drive because they choose not to for DMCA reasons. Supporting lower case is a trivial software addition. All the navigation chipsets from all the major vendors have all the same features, so again it's Pioneer making decisions on what software features to add. Adding these features in software wouldn't increase the cost of the unit.

Overall I personally really like the Z1. That's why is annoys me so much that for $2250 they cut so many small corners.
  8. Don't have a picture but it doesn't show anything more. Of the entire 7" video screen the crappy Pioneer software shows only 1 line (and not a full line, a line about 1" long) of any 1 (and only 1 at a time) piece of info, such as artist, title, channel, genre, etc.
  9. The Pioneer manual is pretty useless although I did go through it before posting here. Does anyone know if you can type in lower case when adding contacts into the Address Book?

I CAN'T STAND ALL UPPER CASE!

It's even more annoying if you transfer contacts from your phone, which has them in normal mixed case, and then you have to edit something.

Does anyone know how to get lower case when typing on the Z1?
  10. Yeah but you could never load them all into the Address Book, and it would have to be manual. Most purpose-built GPS's have the ability to load customer POIs (my Garmin did). Many services sell a database of the camera locations in the correct format for the mainstream GPS's for this reason. You buy an annual subscription and they keep updating the database.
  11.
Just wanted to drop a quick note here. I've been using ducatis flash circuit since the first batch (how long now DB?) and it works absolutely flawlessly every single time. I've never had it fail to bypass my unit. The unit just works as it should. I'm in total agreement that grounding two wires is easier. I just wanted to say that the circuit works in a plug and play fashion without any issues.
While I've only had my Z1 for a couple of weeks now, DB's circuit not only works every time but in my car ('06 Explorer) there is an added benefit. I left my parking brake wire connected. The '06 Ford uses CAN bus (an industrial network) for intermodule communications; it doesn' t pass discrete wires all over the car anymore. As a result there is a slight delay between starting the car and the parking brake signal being driven. So even though the parking brake wire is connected to my Z1 as long as I release the parking brake within a few seconds of starting the car the DB circuit still bypasses the lockout.

So why is this important to me? Simple. In normal operation my Z1 has the lockout bypassed just as I like it. But, say Barney Fife (I live in New England and cops up here live to give out tickets) pulls me over for having a video screen in the driver's view. Well, if I put on my parking brake when Barney pulls me over that will cause the Z1 to go back into lockout mode, and stay there until I shut off the car and start it again. So if Barney claims I have video while driving I can show him that video is locked out just by putting the car into drive.

    I like that.
  12.
I think the navigation on the Z1 is outstanding and the sound quality of the unit is head-and-shoulders above the Alpine I replaced (I'm not sure why everyone seems to love Alpine, for me it was one of the worst radios I've ever owned).
Outstanding???! Have you ever used another GPS system? I had a Garmin 2720 before buying my new truck and installing the Z1 and the Garmin blew away the Pioneer in EVERY facet of navigation. It was faster, much more accurate, and gave much better, clearer directions. Since the voice was synthesized, not recorded, the directions were much better (I know the Z1 has voice synthesis, but I was VERY disappointed to find out that only the street name is synthesized, everything else is recorded, and they only say the street name once). The only advantage the Z1 has over the Garmin is that it is in the dash instead of on top.
  13.
Any input would be greatly appreciated I took the unit out and saw that the "Orange White" cable had not been hooked up by installer so I "Spliced" them together and still no dimming...... Thank you in advance for any input.
What did you splice the orange-white wire (from the Z1) to? The orange-white in an adapter harness? I can't speak for certain about the Mustang but in my '06 Explorer Ford has changed from discrete wiring to CAN bus. All major modules, including the stock audio unit, communicate via a 2-wire network. There is NO illumination wire going to the audio unit, so the orange-white wire in the aftermarket harness adapter is useless.

In my case CircuitCity did the install (I got a great deal on the Z1 and free installation was included) and even though I told the installer that there was no illumination wire in the stock harness he just connected the 2 orange-white wires together like you did. I found a dimmer wire nearby going to the switch for the Information System. The smaller systems don't use the CAN bus since they don't have processors in them.

I suspect that your Stang also uses CAN bus so you will have to find a discrete illumination wire elsewhere.
  14.
If it were me, and I confirmed that it *was* a heat issue. I might consider cutting a little side vent behind the dash in my a/c system and route some cool air with a little hose or something towards the Z1. Be careful though, condensation could be your next enemy if not done properly. Obviously, this would not fix the problem when you first start the car, but it would reduce your wait time.
The problem with that idea would be that in winter you would be dumping hot air on the Z1. If you go this route make sure you do it in such a way that you can easily close it off in winter.
