  5. It sounds like you connected the illumination wire to a switch rather than to your headlight circuit. This wire, if connected to the headlight switch circuit, automatically switches between day and night when your headlights are turned on or off.
  6. Nothing to do with where you live. The software lacks many features that most other nav units have. One of the most basic features of a navigation system is to provide alternate routes. A Garmin lets you tell it not to take a road and it will route around that road. The Pioneer gives you options of 6 different alternate routes but it picks them. In the case I was referring to it proposed 6 routes but all took the non-existent bridge.   7. The bigger question is do you want a navigation system that works or do you want the Pioneer? The beautiful Z2 navigated me right into a river yesterday. You'd think it could figure out an alternate route since the "bridge" on its maps didn't exist. But you can't tell the Pioneer to avoid a specific road. Any Garmin will do that. I had a Garmin portable before I put in the Z2 but I have to say the Pioneer navigation is pitiful compared to Garmin. If you want Pioneer so badly I'll gladly sell my Z2.

  9. I've had a Curve since the day Cingular released it. Paired it up without an issue and have used it daily for months with no problem. I would consider performing the reset that clears out the Bluetooth pairings (I don't remember the exact procedure but do a search; it's been posted here several times) and then trying to pair it again.
  10. The VSS hookup is not for speed per se, it's for dead reckoning. I used to have a stand-alone Garmin, which I loved, but it did not have dead reckoning. Sounds like the Kenwood doesn't either, which is kind of surprising these days. In case you're not familiar with it, dead reckoning uses a gyro and the speed input from the car to keep accurately routing even when you lose the satellite signal temporarily.   11. I have a Z1 and am considering selling it to get the Kenwood. I purchased a navigation system primarily for navigation. I'm a sales engineer and have to find customers in areas I don't know. As far as I'm concerned the audio in either Pioneer or Kenwood are excellent, and certainly good enough for me. But having switched from Garmin portable GPS to the Pioneer I can't believe how bad the Pioneer navigation is.   12. I can't speak to the 8703e but my 7130c has no problem transferring business cards to the Z1. Only drawback is the names go in backwards, so after a few I gave up and manually entered the important ones.

    This is a legal decision by Pioneer. I read where they stated they could not control piracy if they supported MP3s on the Z1. Ripping an audio CD they can claim the owner must have had an original. They simply don't want to get sued by the RIAA.
  14. I had a Garmin before buying a new truck with a double din opening and putting in the Z1. The Pioneer unit is nice in that it is an all-in-one unit, but the Garmin blew it out of the water in navigating. The Pioneer is feeble at best. If Kenwood ever releases the double din that you can get in Japan over here I would dump the Pioneer in a minute and get the Kenwood. Their navigation is made by Garmin.

    Don't have a picture but it doesn't show anything more. Of the entire 7" video screen the crappy Pioneer software shows only 1 line (and not a full line, a line about 1" long) of any 1 (and only 1 at a time) piece of info, such as artist, title, channel, genre, etc.

  18. The Pioneer manual is pretty useless although I did go through it before posting here. Does anyone know if you can type in lower case when adding contacts into the Address Book? I CAN'T STAND ALL UPPER CASE! It's even more annoying if you transfer contacts from your phone, which has them in normal mixed case, and then you have to edit something. Does anyone know how to get lower case when typing on the Z1?
  19. Yeah but you could never load them all into the Address Book, and it would have to be manual. Most purpose-built GPS's have the ability to load customer POIs (my Garmin did). Many services sell a database of the camera locations in the correct format for the mainstream GPS's for this reason. You buy an annual subscription and they keep updating the database.

  24. Another possibility is to get a 12V fan like those used in PC's (make sure it's 12V; most PC fans are 5V these days) and mount it under the dash to push some air up around the Z1. This will be very dependant on how much room there is to get air up there. At least this way on cooler days you could put a switch in line with the fan and only power it when you need it.
