1. rapayn1, you sound like someone who has never had a GPS system in a car before. I don't mean this as an insult of any type; just that if you had a GPS already you would know what you are missing by having the unit locked out while driving. To me this has nothing to do with playing a video while driving. I consider that stupid and unsafe behavior. But after having a portable GPS in my car for the past 8 months, and the factory navi for 2-1/2 years in my wife's Accord, (which has no lockout, by the way, just a disclaimer screen when you start up that must be acknowledged) I can tell you that
2. Well I just got an April '06 unit at Circuit City. Hopefully I won't have any problem with Ducatiboy's flasher circuit.
3.

So, since Pioneer is screwing us once again, does anyone know where you can still get a June '06 or older Z1 from a legitimate dealer? I was just about to order one from 6ave when I read that the July units no longer allow you to bypass the BS lockout.
hmmm, this is news, by BS lockout are you referring to the functions that are normally unlocked by installing a ducati boy flasher circuit? Sorry i guess i am just not familiar with the term BS lockout. Good information to know as i will be buying one soon from 6ave. thanks.[/qu
4. Calling tech support would be futile. Before deciding on the Z1 I was going to order the D2 from Crutchfield due to the $900 worth of freebies with the purchase, but I wanted to know about Bluetooth. Contacted Pioneer tech support 3 times. Got 3 different answers from 3 different reps. Two said you could use Bluetooth with the D2 (not the module for the Z1 but the older module, the BTB100), one was adamant you couldn't. When I forwarded their e-mails to each other all three still insisted they were correct!!!!! So, if their tech support reps can't even agree on whether or not the D2
5. Mine is also an Eddie Bauer. Where did you mount the navigation antenna? I looked in the factory service manual and for the factory nav unit they put the antenna in the dash above the glove box. Looks like a perfect spot except you have to remove the airbag to get in there, and I'm terrified of those things. I can see myself setting off the airbag and killing myself before I ever get to try my Z1 !
6. So, since Pioneer is screwing us once again, does anyone know where you can still get a June '06 or older Z1 from a legitimate dealer? I was just about to order one from 6ave when I read that the July units no longer allow you to bypass the BS lockout.
7. Crutchfield has the same deal but they only want $1249 for the whole kit! And they also include free installation and a couple of other freebies.
8. When in intermittent mode the windshield wiper delay adjusts in reponse to vehicle speed (i.e., when stopped at a light you don't need the wipers going as often as you would on the highway given the same rain conditions). I didn't know the Explorer had these (I know, read the F#$%en manual) but I can't think of any other reason the vehicle speed sensor goes into the wiper motor control. I have had these on other cars though.
9. Thank you 12VPIMPEN. I should have realized that even though the major components (audio system, instrument cluster, etc.) all use CAN bus to communicate the smaller items, like the individual indicators and switches that light up, and the speed-sensitive windshield wipers, would have discrete signals. Ok, I guess it's safe to order my Z1 now. I'm confident I have access to everything necessary to hook it up. Thanks again to all who helped.
10. Ok, I found there are "Illumination" wires going to some of the individual light-up components, such as the Message Center Switch. Only the big components, like the gauge assembly and audio assembly get this via the CAN bus. Now the only major remaining hurdle is the VSS. Any ideas on the VSS?
11. Hi again, Anybody know if the Sirius antenna built-in on new Ford vehicles uses a standard connector? When I install the Z1 I want to keep Sirius as I've had it for years. I know I can't use the Ford Sirius receiver but would hate to have to add a second antenna when there is a factory installed one on the roof already. If the connector is Ford-specific, anybody know if anybody makes an adapter cable from Ford-Sirius to standard Sirius? Thanks again to all for the great information I've already received from this forum.
12. Hi tjdehya, No, the stock radio doesn't have an "Illumination" wire; neither does the dash guage assembly. That's the problem. These modules all get a signal over the CAN bus (a 2-wire communications bus) that "lights are on" or "lights are off." Therein lies the problem. That's why I think I would have to go directly to sensors or switches for everything. For example, the "Output Shaft Speed (OSS) Sensor" goes into the engine computer and then the computer sends a signal via the CAN bus to the tach and speedometer. They read this signal and display the appropriate info. It
13. Hi again, This forum had me convinced to install a Z1 myself so I downloaded the wiring diagrams for my new 2006 Explorer and discovered Ford has gone to CAN bus for all wiring. The audio connector at the stock radio has only power inputs plus CAN bus; no Illumination wire, no Vehicle Speed Sensor wire, nothing. So, how does the Z1 connect up? I assume I would have to go directly to the headlight switch to tap into Illumination, and the car's engine control computer must get a speed signal from somewhere (I found an "Output Shaft Sensor" lead coming from the tranny, but God only kn
14. Hi, I just found and joined this forum as I am about to get either a Z1 or a D2 for my new '06 Explorer. I'm trying to decide if the Z1 is worth the extra money, especially given all the freebies you can get at Crutchfield with the D2 (including a portable GPS). Do most of you think the Z1 is worth the extra money? The biggest question is should I have it installed or do it myself? If I install it myself the Z1 can allegedly be had for around $1500 at 6ave or other online dealers, but nobody has definitively answered whether or not Pioneer will honor the warranty if purchased
