Sounds like it's wired to the brake lights and not the reverse lights. Brake lights stay on therefore constant signal so it won't power off when switched. Brakes stay lit for reverse and braking so it gets power from either. But reverse brakes "dim" after you switch to drive. That's the lead you need. I hope I'm making sense.
