1.
Thread, I happened upon your post after seeing your pics at the Fredtdi forum. I just received the Z-1, IPOD, bluetooth, Flash circuit, and sirius components and am waiting on the wiring harness and dashkit (http://www.cardomain.com/item/SCOVW2317B) for my 06 VW Jetta. Thankyou for the info on the speed pulse wire. Did you need an antenna adaptor for your Z-1 and VW fatory antenna? Do you have a reverse camera, and where did you install it? I plan on doing the install in the next couple days.
Get this adapter for the antenna:
    http://enfigcarstereo.com/shopsite_sc/s ... _EU55.html

I didn't get a backup camera, for whatever reason I don't have much of a use for one.
  2. And it's got boatloads of traction. I like the twisties more than 1/4 miles.

But, as much power as I can put into the R a bike would still beat it on a road corse easy.

In fact nothing short of a Ariel Atom can give a bike a really good run for the money on a road track.
  3. Well, some of you may remember that I installed a Z1 into a 2006 VW GLI:
    http://avic411.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1298

I sold the car and put the stock radio back in and bought a 2004 R32 in great shape. Of course the Z1 was the first thing I changed in the car. Install was a little different as fat as the speed pulse wire goes. It's a different color but, still behind the insturment cluster.

Other than that, everything hooked up the same way.

Here's a pic of the final install:

And here's the car it's installed in:

  4.
Thread,

    Nice write up!

One quick question. When you ordered the part "trim ring" from Enfig.com, which one did you order?

    MK5 Golf/ 2005+ Jetta Radio Dash Kit
Dash kit for 2005 Jetta and all MK5 Golf's

    or

    Volkswagen - 1K0 857 850 3X1
    Factory Aftermarket radio dash kit

    Thanks,
Not the VW one.
  5.
So far with the latest design of my circuit, the problems have been been 2 vehicle incompatibilities (06 Jetta GLI with a Dietz Can adapter and a 03 Chevy truck with a remote starter.. I blame those "add ons" for the vehicle incompatibility)
And I would not disagree with you since the Dietz provides the unit with the constant and the switched.

I want to say again I really appreciate your help making your product fully compatiable with my car.
  6.
Nice job! I'm looking to install a Z1 in my '06 Jetta. Where did you get the trim ring - Did you purchase from VW, or is this after market? How did you get a good deal from Circuit City?

    Thanks for the great post.
I got the trim ring from enfig.com. It comes as a single din with a cubby but you remove the cubby and cut off the bar and you have a double din.

Got the good deal by signing up for their credit card, got the discount, then paid it off before 30 days so no interest.
  7. The dash and console in my car is the exact same you'll find in 2005.5+ Jettas/GTIs/GLIs/Rabbits so, if you have one of those this should give you a good idea how it can turn out.

I came from a D1 which I was meh about. The eclipse Nav I had in my tC I felt was better less the NavTraffic. What was really bugging me about the D1 was the track ahead and track back "button". It was a pain to get it right when the car was moving. And the iPod controls left a lot to be desired. And being a geek, I have bluetooth everything. Sooooo enter the Z1.

I purchased the unit, the new iPod controller, and the Bluetooth adapter at Circuit City with a nice discount. I reused my XM / XM NavTraffic reciever from the D1. And, I bought Ducatiboy's flash circuit.

Since I had installed the D1 installing the Z1 was straightforward. The important wires (speed pulse, backup signal, etc) were already tapped, no hunting around with a multimeter. But, for those who may be hitting this post trying to figure out how to install it into your VW here are the important bits:

    - The speed pulse wire is the white wire with a purple stripe behind the insturment cluster. Pull forward on the plastic trim in the middle of the cluster to reveal two torx scews under the cluster. Remove them and pull the cluster towards you to release it. You now have access to the wire.

    - The backup wire is trickier. Rather than run a wire all the way back to the trunk I tapped it at the box under the dash. You're going to be looking for a grey/white wire. It's in connector C position 12. Here is a PDF for enabling a rear fog light on the car that has a diagram showing where the wire is located. Just don't relocate the wire like the instructions say :)

    - Illumination can be picked up right at the headlight switch and is straightforward.

    - Any of the aftermarket trim pieces are going to leave a lot to be desired. Be prepared with some bondo, sandpaper, and paint to get a factory fit look.

    - You need the Z1 install kit to get a cage to mount it in. I just reused the one from my D1.

    - You can get a switched 12V from the fuse panel at the side of the dash. Position 45 is empty and is switched. Use a add-a-circuit to tap into it.

For the non-vw owners: We have to find a 12V switched power source because the car and a lot of it's electronics including the radio are controlled via a can-bus network and it tells the radio to shut off when the key is removed. Since no aftermarket radios are can enabled we have to find a switched source on our own. This also means we lose steering wheel controls as well.

Or, you can purchase a Dietz Can adapter and it provides constant and switched power as well as the speed pulse, reverse, and parking brake signals. It also re-enables the steering wheel volume controls but, not the track controls, those are still being worked on.

Ducatiboy's flasher circuit worked great with one exception, if you have the key in ACC for awhile because you're listening to the stereo and yo crank the engine to start it the Z1 resets but does not pick up the flash from the circuit. However, Ducatiboy being the excellent guy he is heard about this and came up with a solution and sent me a new circuit. It works flawlessly in all scenarios. I can't say enough about Ducatiboy, he went the extra mile to make sure everything worked like factory with no side effects. I'd like to say we worked together but all I did was take readings and sent them to him. He did the reprogram and new circuit. All in less than a week. :D

The sat antenna is mounted at the base of the windshield just forward of the center air vent. Gets great reception. The GPS antenna is mounted behind the insturment cluster under the dash material. It still picks up a full compliment of satellites.

How do I like the unit? I LOVE it! The iPod controls are stellar compared to the D1 as is the display of information. Actually, the entire display is much improved over the D1. NavTraffic works the same as before and I love having 3 XM "bands" for all my presets.

The lighting matches the VW blurple color damn near perfectly. No more green illumination standing out on my dash. Everything is now blurple and red.

The phone integration is great except when I'm washing the car and listening to the stereo and I forget to disconnect the phone from the Z1 and someone calls. I have to scramble back into the car to talk to them.

Well, I've rambled enough, you can tell I really enjoy the Z1. Here are the pics.

  9.
Ok, not only do I think I know what's going on, I think I can tweak my software to work with this. Of course your's has the "old" (or curent) software. I'll make some modifications, try it on my truck and send you something to switch it out for. If you don't mind taking your dash out again to put a different circuit in.
Nah, I can get it apart in under 10 min. And the circuit is easy enough to switch out. I didn't use sauter on it until I was sure everything worked.
That's very weird. You are getting the ILL wire off the little add on device aren't you? If you are then I would bet it something to do with that device. If not, then I'm not sure what happened there, maybe something to do with the Z1?
I read it and the ILL had 0 voltage on it. So *shrug*
This scares me about that Can adapter. It sounds like they can't supply enough current for the reverse sense wire or the Z1 requires WAY too much current. I know most people think in terms of voltage. It's 0V when off and 12V when it's on, but the supply has to be able to source enough current for whatever is reading it. If you read the can adapter with a multimeter, it requires VERY little current. Since the can adapter supplys very little, then it's fine. But it seems like the Z1 requires much more current to "read" the reverse signal than the can adapter supplys. If the current needed by the Z1 is more than the can adapter can supply the voltage will drop on it's output. That's probably what's happening.
Yeah, the D1 would read the reverse input with just 3v on it. Guess the Z1 is just more picky.
  10. Oh, and it's in :D

I love how it matches the blurple of the VW and the bluetooth integration rocks and the iPod control is light years ahead of the D1s.

  11.
You are sure the red wire from my circuit is connected directly to the red wire out of the Z1 right?
Yep, unless I misinterpreted the diagram it goes something like this. Red wire from car connected to red wire from your circuit and the red wire from the Z1
Well, you say when you turn the car on and wait, then crank the engine, the flasher doesn't bypass things right?
Correct.
Does the Z1 reset when you crank over the engine?
Ye, you got it.
Find out if the flasher circuit does, watch the orange output of my circuit with a meter.

See what happens on my circuit's boot up. Turn on the car, the output should be 0v for 1 second, then 12V for 5 seconds, then flicker a bit over one more second, then ground after that.
That's exactly what it does if I just go right to crank and don't allow the Z1 to boot up while it's in ACC. That's also what happens if I just go to ACC and stay there.
Crank over the engine, does the Z1 reset? Does my circuit go through this cycle again? Or is the output from my circuit 0v after that?
Nope, it stays at zero.
I'm working on a slight modification for my circuit for these issues. So far you are the second person who has had any issue like this, but I'm sure I can come up with something.
There's bugs in everything that eventually get worked out so no worries.

One other interesting thing happened after installing it and driving around last night. When I'd put the car in ACC or start it the Z1 would think the illumintaion wire was hot even hen it was not and the lights were off. Pulling the constant fuse cleared.

And, remember I mentioned my backup was not being seen by the Z1? Well, when the harness not conneted to the Z1 and the car in reverse the voltage on the wire was just under 12v where I'd expect it to be. If I plugged it into the Z1 the voltage was only 3.5. So, I tapped directly into the reverse wire instead of the one provided by the Dietz CAN adapter and now it works fine.

Oh, and vehicle dynamics isn't working despite speed pulse working. I rarely used it with the D1 so I'm not overly concerned with it and maybe it just needs more time to calibrate.
  12. It's in!

Ducatiboys mod works like a champ. Only caveat is tha ton the VWs, if you stop at ACC for a bit and then crank the switched power shuts off and on quickly and the ducati thing does not catch it. So, just go from off the crank and you're good.

Another issue I need to look into more tomorrow is that the unit is not sensing when the backup light is on. I've tested the connection with the multimeter and when the car is in reverse there is about 4 v going through it and when it's not in reverse no voltage is going through it so I'm kinda confused. Well, unless i's expecting 12v but, that seems odd.

    Overall this thing rocks.

Wonder if prices will come down on the adapters
Enfig had one coming out(maybe this is it) and it was priced like that I heard.
Too steep for me to justify at this point. I assume that I will have to tap the fuse panel for switched power? Constant should be at the harness.

On a side note, just realized that my "retained power" has never worked.
everything shuts off when I pull the key, not when the door opens as it did on my MK IV. :?
Yep, it's the ENFIG one. I'm testing it for Christian. It DOES make retained power work though which is cool. Radio stays on until you pull out the key.

Switched power can be tapped at position 45 on the fuse panel on the side of the dash. Double check it with a multimeter first though.
  14.
Nice, I used your DIY for the LED tails and rear fog so I have that printed out.
    Thanks for the help.
    Dustin
I'll do a DIY for this kind of install then. Sounds like it's needed. Only difference is that I've got the DIETZ can adapter so I get everything like speed pulse, lighting, parking brake, backup light, and steering wheel controls through it. But, it's $300 and we're still working out how to get the track forward and back buttons working since the MFD has to be in radio mode for those to work. Basically the DIETZ unit has to fake being a can enabled radio.

This is one of the reasons I'm getting the Z1. I hate the D1 track ahead and back "button" it's hard to get accurate when the car is moving.
  15.
Thead, Nice to see you post over here as well. I will probably be hitting you up with some questions on Vortex IM. I am ordering my Z1 today.
Does the cluster have to come out to get to the speedpulse wire??
Yep, but it's just two torx screws and a good yank.
Do you have sat module?? how did you do the antenna?
I don't want to add an additional sat antenna and want to use my stock antenna if at all possible. I have a pkg 2 w/XM.
Same as my car. You can't use the stock SAT antenna. I put the pioneer one on my dash in front of the center vent and it works great. I put the GPS antenna behind the insturment cluster so you can't see it and it also works great in that location.
Do I need anything other than the Metra 70-9003 harness adapter?

    Dustin
Butt splice connectors at least. And a multimeter comes in handy. To find the reverse wire just read my rear fog DIY in the MKV forum and it will tell you chich wires are the backup lights. You can tap right at the ECU and don't have to run a wire all the way to the back of the car.
  16. I just ordered the flasher circuit. (It's the one going to infinite loop ducatiboy :D ) Looks like a top quality product and thank you for the instructions on how it works. Until I read that it does not actually flash the headlights and just tells the HU that it did a concern of mine is set aside.

My car is a 2006 Jetta GLI and these cars use a CAN-BUS system for the electronics and many of the features of the car. I currently have a D1 installed and use a DIETZ CAN adapter to keep my steering wheel volume controls intact and it also provides speed pulse, parking brake, switched 12v, constant 12v, backup signal, and illumination.

I was concerned that if the circuit actually sent back a signal to the car so to speak that it would trip out the DIETZ adapter and I'd just have to wire it into the headlight switch making for a less uh clean install.

I did the install of the D1 myself along with the parking brake hack for that thing but, I've had it with the track up/down button on the damn thing. I try to hit track up with it and I end up going playlist up.

I also find the iPod integration in the D1 lacking and the Z1 seems to be much improved. Since I have playlists I don't think the slownedd of browsing artists, etc will bother me.

Bluetooth is a plus too as I have a RAZR and detest people talking hands on their phone wile driving. And I don't like the borg bluetooth microphone hanging off one of my ears when driving.

Anyways, I should be doing the install this weekend I hope. Are there many new VW/Audi owners here who would be interested in a writeup? I know the wires needed to tap if you don't have a can adapter to get speed pulse, backup, and parking brake.
  17. What kind of Vdub - Audi do you have?

I've got a 2006 GLI which is a pain because the electronics are all CAN-BUS.

But, despite people saying you need a $300 CAN-BUS adapter to get a speed pulse signal, you don't

The white wire with a purple stripe behind the insturment cluster is a regular speed pulse wire that you can tap right into with no worries.
  18. :D I called Pioneer on Tuesday. They agreed it was the wrong disc set for the AVIC-D1. They were going to send the correct disc out that day and I agreed to return the ones I had, which I did today. I never opened them up and tried them. I did use the AVIC-D1 Version 1.2 I purchased off eBay. No noticeable difference other than not having the constant "XM updating, please wait" message. I checked the file dates on the disc, many have new dates compared to Version 1.0. I need more time to determine what the differences are.

I still have the blue version 1.0 disc that came with my D1 :(

Is it a free upgrade to get the 1.2 discs? And, who do I call? I registered my D1 when I bought it.

  19.

Dumb question. How do you change the bootscreen?

I read how to change the background image so we're good there but, what about the bootscreen.

Apologies if this is n00bish, been awhile since I poked around in the HU prefs on my D1 and I'm clearly not in my car and won't be for a little while.
No Worries :)
Oddly enough, the bootscreen is the only jpeg on the D1.....stupid pioneer.
just change BGOPEN2.JPG to any JPEG of your choice. 500x240 is the resolution
Ahh, so if I want to change the bootscreen I need to create a custom DVD with that file modified correct?
That was me, also forgot to add that then my custom DVD would be the one I'd have to keep in the D1 if I want that bootscreen correct?
Just replace BGOPEN2.JPG with whatever jpeg you want, stick the DVD in the D1. You don't need to keep it in because it loads the jpeg into it's internal flash memory. *thanks pioneer* :P
Cool, I'll be posting my pics this weekend then most likely.

My HU is in a 2006 VW GLI. (Jetta)
