when bluetooth is on, i can't hear the incoming audio, but apparently others can hear me. is this a problem with my iphone or the system? volume is up max on everything

my iphone connects and makes calls, but there is no audio. it seems to mute when paired with the n4. everything else works...calls in/out, etc. there's no sound when a call is made to me or when i am calling someone but the call is being made. is there a setting i'm not missing for phone volume?
