  1. I posted a link outlining how to do this step by step here: viewtopic.php?f=21&t=25480&p=173258&hilit=free+themes#p173258 hope it helps.
  2. I did that as well. I even went one step further and only copied just the .bmp files that I knew I WANTED to change from the 800_480 folder and I got that weird error. And just double checking, for the people that have successfully done this, are you just right clicking and selecting compress after you highlight all the files in the unzipped data folder....or are you using 7zip and after adding all the files to the archive, just selecting zip. Because either way, neither work for me.
  3. Background: I am on a 90bt and this theme fully worked on the 2.0 firmware already. Once I changed to 3.0, problems started after reload: I'm able to load the image.res, but not the data.zip file. Whenever I do, the unit boots up as normal, but after it gets to the main screen and says "system is booting up"...or something similar it will reboot. I've tried editing the data.zip file and only copying over the 800_480 folder over onto the stock data.zip and that lets me boot up, but gives me an error at the main screen that says "Failed to open file: ui_pioneer/800_480/loading.bmp, existi
  4. I'm wanting to just change the font on the main screen (destination, contacts, devices, phone, settings). I've ripped the code apart trying to find where JUST this is defined, but failed miserably. Anyone found the location? Remember, I'm not wanting to change the NAV font settings, so I'm leading to think it would not be located in the data.zip file.
  5. I've started a new thread called "Free themes and How to make them". Here I am listing everything I've learned as to how to make your own themes and piece together parts from other themes to make a custom one. I've also added two themes I've created as well for download. Please contribute to this thread: http://avic411.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=25480&p=173253#p173253
  6. Here is a combination of an Apple theme (for the AM/FM/Devices icons) and the "Red Theme". I've kept much of all the "Red theme" alone, other than swapping out the "Devices" icons, using a cool Russian poster art someone submitted as a splash screen (then editing it up to look a little better and fit full screen), as well as changing the Main screen's three icons. I really enjoy the artwork of Jeff Soto, so I whipped up 2 different themes using two Jeff Soto paintings. Each theme changes colors when a button on the main screen is pressed, I just was unable to capture the "Don't Grow Up"
  7. I've wanted to take pieces from different themes and MOD my own, but have found the few people that are making all the themes are very possessive of their knowledge of How To Make a Theme. So I thought I'd post about what I've learned and post some free themes I've whipped up or pieced together. I hope other people who make themes will do the same below. First things first, HOW to get the image file off your AVIC, Edit it, how to re-compress it, and put it back on the stereo: 1) Download 7zip from http://www.7zip.com 2) download the Image.res file from your Avic unit (after you boot
  8. Ok, by process of elimination, I have FOUND IT! Just so it's said for anyone looking to do this in the future I have outlined a How To Guide for the whole process. I will test my themes a couple more times then post for everyone as well. I'll shoot a link when it's done: 1) Download 7zip from www.7zip.com 2) download the Image.res file from your Avic unit (after you boot up to Windows), look in the MyFlashDevice folder, then APL, then look for Image.res. Highlight it, click on "Edit" from the "File, Edit...." menu at the top of the screen and click copy. 3) Click on the "Start" butto
  9. I'm assuming you mean compress the root level "image" folder not the image folder inside it that contails the other folder items. Regardless, I've zipped both to test using 7zip then changing .zip to .res. No luck. It seems to at least try to load if I compress as a .7z instead of .zip then change to .res. This is all very irritating since I have 2 themes ready to go except for this step.
  10. you just change the extension from .7z to .res what I get when I just change the extention like you mentioned is an iconless, graphic less theme. it's only text and black screens. All that I changed was the 3 icons on the main screen and the fm/am icons from devices. The rest of the "red theme" has been stripped out. Any ideas why? The images are bmp-16 and I've tried 24 as well to no avail.
  11. Ok, the 7zip was a good suggestion. It allowed me to extract the Image.res file into it's subfolders. Now I am having issues finding a way to compress all the folders back into the ".res" file extention. Other posts have said to use 7zip on it leaving an extention of .7z, but after uploading that to the APL folder, the unit will not boot properly. I've tried changing the extention manually to .res, and that works a little, but it's causing my main screen to just have text. If anyone has sucessfully uncompressed a .res file, edited the contents, and also re compressed it back with the
  12. 7zip My understanding was that 7zip was a compression program. I'm wanting to know what program these users are using to edit the file image.res (or al least be able to create one from scratch). If 7zip is able to do this, please let me know. If not, please let me know what will.
  13. Does anyone know what program/editor these people are using to "create" the image.res files? Because I want to swap out the fm, am icons on the red theme with another but the are stored within this file that I cannot break apart. Ideas?
  14. it might be that the files are corrupted or you're not rezipping the data.zip properly, are you using 7zip? I did not try 7zip. I compressed the file into a zip using Mac OS X Leopard, then but right click-compressing the file with Windows XP. I'll try the 7Zip though right now. That did the trick. Everything is perfect now. FINALLY!
