I know detached gps are snatched from cars all the time... are in-dash units snatched often as well?

Is the paneling on this unit a flat black or shiny? Are all the Avics the same?

Someone has an Avic f700bt for $300 used they want to sell me. I'm looking for an in-dash, should I buy it? I was told to make sure there is the iGo 8.30 update on it... how do I check this? The person says they don't know. If there isn't one, where and how much does it cost to get the update? What about the other 2.0 update?
