Avic-Z1 bad distortion at medium volume and up; any ideas?

Tested radio again.....works great on the bench. -
Just installed my Z1 in my jeep using a Metra CHTO-013 adapter. It works, except when I turn the volume up to about medium the sound gets really distorted. -I swapped the Metra adapter for another one and same problem. -I hooked up the RCAs from the Z1 to some computer speakers and it sounds great. -I called Metra, they said the voltage from the Pioneer is probably 4v and the Metra can only handle up to 3v. Any ideas on what's wrong?
