  1. Thanks, john, that should help the noobs. There were a few parts that were ambiguous. It is always difficult to write instructions that work for all skill levels. You have to assume some level of PC competence.

However, it seems many, if not all, of your links don't work (at least for me).

Plus I thought Pioneer removed the 1.0001 (or whatever) update from their web site. At least it was gone the last time I looked. I could be wrong, but that link didn't work for me.

Also a few warnings to those attempting:

    1. These updates will require your unit to be operating for about 1 hr (or more). Be sure your car battery is in good condition and fully charged. It wouldn't hurt to connect a charger.

    2. Make sure you know any "features" in your car that might shut off the power to ACC (like a timeout, or closing the door, or locking the doors). Some vehicles have these types of quirks.

    3. Do not attempt to start your engine while an update is in progress. This will likely reset the AVIC and may brick you unit.

    4. There is no way to go back to the previous version. Some people had misgivings about the new user interface. I personally don't care for it, but I also don't use Pandora. I like the old iPod interface better. Decide for yourself.

  2. Is there a way to adjust the increment of the radio frequency of the head unit?

    Thanks

No. I'm sure the tuner chipset would support it, but there is no way to change it in the GUI. Also, the DVD is locked to region 1 (North America).

  3. Hi,

I just installed the AVIC-Z120BT in my car. I grounded the brake wire and ground cable together. I left the mute wire as original (no grounding or change of position as suggested for the bypass).

I just wanna ask the reason behind in moving the mute pin to the left and grounding it?

    Thanks for the help

Have you tried entering a destination or searched for a POI yet? Oh, wait, I see you are in Malaysia. You can forget about POI or entering a destination by address. I'd say the GPS is pretty usless for you. So the PB override doesn't do much for you anyway, unless you want to play videos while driving.

  4. so i'll try it with the green wire and mute wire grounded( hooked up to the (-) in the battery charger... Is that safe for the unit?) Did not try the dvd

though so i'll try that but i dont know whats going on with the update why its freezing up on the password step.

    That should work.

I wouldn't bother with the update for now. You verified that the unit works. The more you mess with it, the more chance something can go wrong. If you accidently disconnect a wire or you loose power during the upgrade, you could brick the unit. It is safer in the car with it permanently installed and a fully charged battery.

Are you sure it hasn't been upgraded already?

  5. So i got it to turn on but i cant cant seem to click the system settings to find out what firmware it has. I went ahead and did the steps for updating the firmware but i got stuck on the password. I cant click any letters. Do i need to install it to do all the updating? Even the bluetooth setting i cant click. Any suggestions?

Did you install the bypass? I'm not sure it matters, but it might. The Parking Brake lockout prevents a lot of user-interface type things. If you attempted the bypass, try playing a DVD. If it will not play ( I don't know what the message is since I bypassed from day-1), then either you did it wrong, or the pin isn't eated far enough in the plug socket..

BTW, you say you can't enter any letters. Do you mean you CAN enter numbers? Or you don't even get the keyboard on screen?

  6. Okay, so I spoke to the rep. at Pioneer who recommended I try out a different iPod / iPhone with the unit just to see if it was the unit or the iPod software. So, I borrowed my wife's iPhone, plugged it in, the unit cataloged all the songs from her iPhone, and the voice commands were recognized! So, I thought maybe if I connected my own iPhone it would work since the VR catalog got "reset" in a way. Sure enough it worked!! So, I suppose the iPod app was in a bad state or something. Who knows! All I know, is I'm glad I can finally control my songs and calls with voice commands once again.

I assume if I had done a restore that it would have worked, but since this solution worked I'm good to go. Thanks for all the help!

I have a feeling that switching iPod/iPhones accomplished what I was trying to do by turning OFF & ON VR Cataloging. Unfortuantely, that doesn't seem to force it to rebuild the catalog. I tried it yesterday on mine and it just used the old catalog (which, in my case, was still good). This may only apply to my particular installation, but I accidently found a reliable way. With the car stopped, I insert the key to ACC. I let the aVIC boot and listen to iPod. A few minutes later I start the engine - which causes the AVIC to reboot. After the reboot, and after pressing OK, it takes several minutes for the VR catalog to completely rebuild.

My only theory as to why it rebuilds in this scenario it that the car cuts the constant +12 power when I crank the starter, so the AVIC looses it's memory and has to rebuild. If this is true, then all you needed to do was disconnect your battery for a few seconds. Or pull the fuse that feeds the constalant +12v if that is easier.

So, if it happens again, give that a try first. It isn't as cumbersome as a full reset of the AVIC since other settings are retained.

Anyway, glad you're in business again.

  7. You mentioned something about "restore my iPod from iTunes". What do you mean by that? Like completely removing everything from my iPhone and trying again?

I'll post more as I learn more.

First I was thinking you had an iPod, not an iPhone. I have an iTouch, but I'm not sure if there are differences.that matter here.

When you connect your iPhone to your PC, it starts iTunes (if so configured, otherwise start it up manually).

In iTunes is a menu to manage your device (IPod/Phone). You can update the OS and/or restore it, which reloads all your music and videos.

  8. Thanks for the reply Ron. I appreciate your time. I will give those suggestions a try. When I turn the VR Catalog Mode to OFF, should I turn the car off then on again so the unit reboots?

You're welcome. As far as forcing the VR re-catalog, I'm not exactly sure of the proper sequence to force it. Thae manual isn't exactly clear either. It certainly couldn't hurt to reboot after turning OFF. It might also work by just disconnecting and re-connecting the iPod.

Here is what normally seems to happen. Once a full VR catalog has been done, subsequent reboots just do a quick check. On mine it only takes a few (5-10) seconds. A full rebuild takes several minutes.

If you have a Z120, check out pgs 170-171. There are a few things there that you should check. (Language in settings is English, iPod is selected in the AV Source screen, you answerer OK on the Pledge screen.

I should of asked earlier, but I am assuming your iPod can play normally besides VR commands, right?

If re-building your iPod catalog doesn't work, the only other thing I can think of is to restore your iPod from iTunes. BTW, you didn't leave your iPod in the car & connected during the service, did you? Maybe the mechanic changed some setting.

  9. I'm glad I found this thread. My VR commands were working great before I had to take my care in for some repairs to my bumper. When I received the car from the repair garage, everything works fine EXCEPT for the VR commands--regardless of me pressing the OK button before my iPhone BT connection is made! Is it possible that the repair technicians "reset" my AVIC unit so that it ended up in a state where the VR catalog was destroyed or something? Any suggestions I can try to completely reset my AVIC unit?

I should note that when I speak the command "Play Artist" the unit does recognize that, and then announces: "which artist do you want to play", and then the VR fails. So, it's as if the problem is only with the catalog, not the standard commands that ship with the unit.

Thanks for your time and help!

Sounds like the VR catalog is hosed. Try a few more "canned" commands that don't require recognizing the songs, artists, or albumns on your iPod. Like "Next song", "Previous Song", Change Source to FM", "Change Source to iPod", ... If these work, then it isn't your mic, it is the iPod VR catalog. That can be rebuilt in the AV System Settings menu by turning VR Catalog Mode OFF, then ON. It should take several minutes. Oh, make sure Echo Cancel is turned ON in the BT Settings menu.

  10. Thanks, I have and extra PC power supply laying around. so just have to somehow find a way to tap into and use that? i'll give it a try, thanks

A trickle charger would work, or you could remove the battery from your car. I had an extra battery 12v in the garage, so it was easy.

Many modern PC power supplies require mother-board circuitry before they power-up, so beware. I guess you could make an adapter to run off your PC using an unused HD power harness. Make sure you get the correct voltage. I think it provides both +5 and +12. BTW, The Z110/120 spec says 10.8V - 15.1V DC. It can draw up to 10.0 AMPs (which could be a problem with using the HD harness on a PC power supply.

I know it sounds like a pain, but pulling the battery out of your car may be the best and safest solution. Even then, you will need some alligator clips. In any case, avoid stray wires that could short.

  11. Just ordered a Z120BT. Before installing it in my car, is there a way to power it on with a PC power supply so I can check for dead pixels?

I've seen it done before, but didn't take notes that time.

Sure, you can easily bench-check it. Connect the black wire to -12v and the red & yellow to +12v. It should boot right up. Might also be a good time to do the by-pass and test it before installing it. Then you should be able to play DVDs. You could also easily connect line out audio to a stereo ( I used a desk radio with aux line in), or temporarily connect some speakers. I wanted to make sure it wasn't defective before I wasted the time to remove the stock radio and install the AVIC.

Just be very careful that you don't short-out any dangling wires with your power source.

  12. Just to clarify, you did the 2.0 update, and then, without first installing BT 3.10 and 3.11, you installed 2.003?

Now that is sort of backwards, but I doubt it causes a problem. 2.003 did have some BT fix I recall. Maybe there is some conflict.

At least one other member posted that BT Firmware Update was disabled, but I don't recall what the fix was. Maybe that person will see this and jump in here.

I do remember once seeing that disabled on my unit, but it was only temporary. I don't remember the circumstances. Maybe you should do a factory reset.

  13. I'll try this when I get back in the car. It was working fine before. It just started a few days ago where the map literally spins cotinuously using the location as a pivot. I'll also try resetting into 3D and then back into 2D to see if it fixes itself.

Yes, it sounds like the g-sensor is wacky, so the unit thinks you are turning. Try resetting all the sensors so they will re-calibrate (see pg 149 in the Z120 manual). Then drive for a few miles.

  14. It's been a while since I've seen the backside of my Z110, but I don't recognize that connector. Is it from the Pioneer? It doesn't look like the ones in the installation manual. Or maybe it is the OEM radio harness from your vehicle's radio?

I doubt you will find an empty connector shell with no pins. Your best bet, and alot easier, would be to by a second one and remove the pins of the wires you don't need. You might find something from Metra. They make lots of harness adapters.

Sorry, I can't offer much help, but I thought any response would be better than nothing.

  15. I just installed my z120bt. I am attempting the bypass, thought I had it all right, went out driving, video shut down and message came up about parking brake, I will take it apart and make sure I didn't make the hole in the pin to big and try that but is there any other suggestions? I assume its ok to bundle the ground wire from the deck, the ground wire from the ford harness (its a f250 if that matters), the parking brake and the moved mute pin all together or do I have to run a seperate ground for the moved pin and the parking brake by themselves?

Frustrated but want it to work....

In this case, a ground is a ground. It is just a circuit. Sometimes, for audio, you need to be concerned about noise from other sources, but not here. Just make sure it is a good ground. Your issue is probably that the pin is not seated all the way.

  16. Of course you can mount the camera anywhere you desire, but the Z110 will switch the display to the camera input when you are in reverse. You could connect the Reverse wire to a dash switch instead of a backup light circuit. Then you could control it manually.

You can also display it via split screen.

But the biggest problem using the Pioneer camera is that it will reverse the image. That might get confusing with the camera facing forward. Better to get a standard camera (12v dc composite). I'm sure they are available.

  17. I have the bypass and upgraded my 110 to 120 software. It worked great except now my mic doesn't work? I have double checked the connection and tried most everything I can think of. Any idea what could have caused this? The mic worked just minutes before I did the upgrade.

No idea why. Maybe you should try to reset everything to factory. Did you try Voice Recognition? What exactly happens when you press the left button? And, of course, you need to press the stupid OK and be in the correct audio source mode (like iPod) for VR to do anything. I'm assuming this isn't a BT pairing problem.

  18. They installed the Boyo vtl375 camera....and the image is backwards.....hope the install peeps figure it out.

I just checked out the installation manual, which is very skimpy on technical detail. Boyo vtl375 Manual

There appears to be two video outputs in the connector. In the manual, one is labeled Video, the other is Mirror. So maybe the installers got them switched somehow. Like I said, the manual doesn't say much on the actual hook-up. It is mainly on how to mount the unit.

  19. Greetings to all! Im a new owner of a z120bt. I just had it professional installed a week ago. While I have figured out most of this units capabilities, I can't find out of to set my system to automatically mute the music when I have the nav going too. The nav speaks but u can barely hear it over the music. Same thing happens when someone calls me, my music doesn't stop it just keeps playing and I have to back out of call then mute my music. I thought this unit dis this by itself. Help please, this is very annoying!

Read pg 170 in AVIC-120BT manual. AV System Settings menu. First press Mute until it says either Guide/Tel/VR or Tel/VR. Then press Mute Level and chose 20db, 10db, or All based on how much muting you want.

  20. Hi ... I have successfully updated the firmware and copied SD1 to a new SD (formatted FAT32 as instructed) card and inserted it. The password is not taking at all .... no combinations that I have tried is working. Using letters only as instructed. I downloaded the torrent today and used winzip to unarchive the files ... Any ideas ????

Sounds like you didn't patch or install ShortFuse's hack correctly. If it was patched, you should be on version 1.002, if it wasn't correctly patched it will be v1.001. You need to be updated to 1.002 before installing V 2.0

  21. I'm sitting in front of my AVIC right now. In the AV System Settings I don't see a [ANT CTRL] option. The only options Im seeing are AV1 Input, AV2 Input, Wide Mode, Mute, Mute Level, Rear SP, DivX VOD, and VR Catalog Menu.

I've included a pic of what I am describing. Any help?

That's odd, here is mine. I wonder if the difference is because mine was a Z110 upgraded to Z120 software? Maybe the update doesn't overwrite all of the system software. And maybe the Z120 doesn't support this feature. Or maybe it never worked in the first place, so they removed it.

Sorry, I guess that's it then.

  22. Update...Moving the antennae apart fixed all the XM issues. Now the only issue is with the GPS. At times, the GPS thinks I'm off-roading & it when I slow down to stop, the map keeps moving forward & then it thinks I'm in the middle of a field. When I turn onto a different road, it realizes I've turned & then it puts me in the correct spot. This isn't typically a problem, but if my wife is driving downtown & there are lots of streets, it's an issue. Any help is appreciated! This has become one giant hassle.

Sounds like some of the sensors arent working correctly. The gyro should detect the turn, even with poor satellite reception. And VSS will tell the unit what your speed is (approximately). So the unit can do a good job figuring out your heading and speed - and approximate your position based on the last good GPS fix (dead-reconing). Did you follow my post above to recalibrate? You can also see if VSS is working. The VSS reading should be 0 when you are not moving, and non-zero when moving. Don't worry about the actual number, the HU will figure out how many tics per mile as it calibrates.

Are you still getting any error messages?

  23. awe man, thanks ... i liked this feature on a garmin hand held i have, that usually kept in another vehicle.

I live in a rual area (no 911 addresses) Im often asked whats my coordinance?? I see where to enter a coordinate

with the avic to arrive at a destination. Im not too familiar with the avic feeds software yet.

It sounds like you have a need for that then. Seems like it would of been easy for Pioneer to provide some way to see LAT/LON. Jeez, even my Android phone can display that.

  24. Hi all,

Can the PB and mute wire be grounded to the same wire that the radio is grounded to? I hooked up my radio ground, PB, mute wire to the same ground wire and I'm getting the error about my parking brake not being hooked up correctly and I can't enter GPS destinations unless I'm stopped. Before I start trouble shooting and testing connections I wanted to see if it was OK for everything to be grounded to the same place of if the PB and mute need to go to a chassis ground separate from the radio power ground. Thanks for any insight!

Once the bypass mod is correctly done, yes, the radio, PB, and the former mute wire can be grounded together. You did move the mute over one pin, yes? A common problem is not seating the moved wire fully into the connector plug.
