  1. Well, the fact that my WM6.5 HTC HD2 works perfectly seems to say who's lying. But historically, BT support for the various specs and profiles is inconsistent between manufacturers. They will eventually get it sorted out.

BTW, I can boot into Android (2.2.1) and play BT audio MP3s using the built-in audio player. No tags appear, but I can use the Stop/Pause and next/previous buttons to control the playback.

If I could just figure out how to get my Contacts to transfer under Android, I'd run it permanently. So far, this custom port (HyperDroid) is about 80% ready. I'm lovin some of the apps and the phone's VR interface to Google & maps (I haven' tried it through the AVIC). But some parts just aren't as solid as WM in the interface with the Z120.

Interesting - I wonder if Windows Phone 7 includes AVRCP 1.3. I know a local T-Mobile dealer who'll let me try a couple of phones in my car, so I'll add the WPhone to the list. The tiles are nice, and there's no lag on the phone like there are on so many Androids

  2. I have an iPhone 4 running iOS 4.1, but when source is set to BT Audio with the iPod app streaming via bluetooth successfully, I still don't see any meta data on the screen of X120BT.

    The only thing showing is:

    "iPhone connecting..

    Connect"

have you tried different apps to stream to the Pioneer other than the one you mentioned? Pandora maybe?

  3. What a shame that the frickin' iPhone seems to be the only phone supporting the full Bluetooth spec (other than WM 6.5, but that's not gonna happen for my next phone).

Android - get your act together - this is the future!

That's odd - as everything I've read suggests that the Pioneer decks have the AVRCP 1.3 spec built-in, and iOS4.0 supposedly also supports the full spec, aka meta-data, song titles, artists names, etc.

What apparently must be the truth is that either Apple or Pioneer is fibbing.

How do we find out which is which? I took my iPad out to the garage, ran Pandora, and linked via Bluetooth to the Pioneer.

No artist - no song title - just a play and stop button appeared.

Since no phones support this that I can find (other than the gent earlier in this thread who claimed that his WM 6.5 phone transmits meta data), it's hard to get a clear opinion on what two products will make this work.

I need a new phone now, and this would be a great feature, if only I didn't have to do it with Windows Mobile 6.5

    :)

  4. I have a Motorola i1 running Android 1.5 and I can get it to stream music to my Z120.

The Z display shows Connect and trying to connect on the screen.

If I press the connect it just tells me to start the Bluetooth on the phone. (It's already on.)

If I check the Bluetooth settings on the Z it shows connected to the Motorola as both phone and audio.

If I press "play" on the phone the music comes out of the Z.

Unfortunately none of the Z controls affect the i1.

I tried connecting the i1 directly to the USB port and the radio

says the USB isn't supported. ;<

What a shame that the frickin' iPhone seems to be the only phone supporting the full Bluetooth spec (other than WM 6.5, but that's not gonna happen for my next phone).

Android - get your act together - this is the future!

  5. Johnny Depp, as noted, you don't like Pioneer. And that's ok, but I'm not sure how you can blame Pioneer when

Microsoft kills off MSN Direct, and Google kills off Google411. If George Bush ruined the economy, would you blame Jon Stewart?

Do you have a more logical, well thought-out argument?

    :)

  6. My experience has been that once you set the STATE, the unit retains that information and searches cities only in New York (for example). I have also found that you don't have to type out the whole name of the city (Ochunawagublagablaga). You can type the first few characters (OCHU) and touch OK and the unit will give you a list of cities (in the already-selected state) that match. This isn't quite as nice as a predictive behavior, but you don't have to know the exact spelling either.

yup - that's how it works in California as well - I've never had to finish typing a name, just the first few letters.

  7. What are the do's and dont's? Im all ears for tips on getting this in fast and done right. What connectors should I use? 4 components and 1 amp no subwoofer. 14 gauge speaker wire, 4 gauge power. Bought this:http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=380259044645&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

if you're making the connection using the RCA connectors on the 920, just make sure you do so with NO POWER on whatsoever. Some people disconnect the negative battery terminal for safety. Call the pioneer number in the manual for advice as well if you need some. As each car is different, I can't help you with your specific install.

  8. It didn't take that long on my iMac, it's not very diff't from genius playlists, but the sphere interface on the Pioneer is a cool show-off kind of feature. The playlist choices were often questionable, especially the beats per minute ones. It hardly costs you anything to let it churn away for a few hours - you'll be asleep after all. Some people love it. I think it's amusing, and I use it a bit.

yeah, mine finally finished browsing 3,000 songs, but only used 800 for its' playlists. You're right, some of the choices seemed out of place, but I guess the graphic is sorta fun. How do you make it re-shuffle the playlists it creates so it creates new ones? There's no manual of any kind that I can find, so if there's a link to one, please post it.

  9. Has anyone spent the time to thouroughly check this app out - aka letting it spend all night reading your iTunes library and assembling it's "sphere's" (for lack of a better word)?

Is it any different than just using Genius playlists? Better? Worse? Waste of time? Life changing?

    just wondering

  10. Wow. Tried with a Motorola Cliq XT tonight running OS 1.5 and can't even get audio to work right. Track will play for a second then goes into a permanent fast forward mode. I don't know what's going on.

did you ever get this to work? Any other Android users out there who have experimented with your expensive new phones :)

  11. Installing mine this weekend. How did you get it under $400? You use an Android phone? Backup camera?

Amazon sale - 30% off, then an Amazon daily special, which reduced it by $200, and then the $100 rebate. Awesome. Using very old Nokia and Bluetooth is fine - no backup cam yet, likely within 6 months. Be carefull with the install.

  12. Do you have the MSN tuner? If so, what will you do when you lose traffic and live POI and searching in Jan 2011? Will you be pressing Pioneer for an FM-TDS accessory for all the F- and X-series units to replace MSN? Will you fork over another $1000 for the X999 or whatever they tell JasonH about at CES?

Just curious about your thoughts on that...

Technology changes every year - I imagine, in 15 months, when MSN dies, there will be an even better radio for my car, likely running either Windows 7 variant, or Android. I bought my first iPad 3 months ago. It will be obsolete next June. The tech world moves quickly. And doesn't MSN go away in January 2012? It's apparent you seem bitter about something, so it's likely whatever I say won't make you feel any better about Pioneer. Honestly, I never planned to use MSN. Live POI? Explain further please. Who is Jason? I hear Google is killing-off Google 411. Oh no - whatever will I do now - sell all my Google shares? I suppose I could have bought a Kenwood for three times as much, but then I couldn't use all that money to buy my new unit in January 2012.

  13. NOOOOOO say it aint so!!! I love this damn feature.

wow - I hope Pioneer updates the software pronto to reflect this - nothing worse than a greyed out icon to remind you of something you don't have anymore

  14. as time wears on, I'm just lovin' my x920BT more and more every day. For what I paid (sub $400), this has been the best tech purchase I've made in a long time. Sure, the nav could be a little more slick, and the BT quality has some up in arms (mine seems to be mostly fine), but overall, this is a great machine that has made my driving experience better every day.

I'll keep hammering Pioneer for improvements, but overall, this has been a great purchase.

I even find the ECO thing mildly amusing, especially the submarine "ping" that goes off when I goose the throttle.

    ha

  15. I took a Vegas trip last weekend and the GPS kept trying to take me on unpaved and unmarked roads. I could not fin the option to avoid these roads anywhere. All in all Garmin GPS is more user friendly and accurate. I wish some buttons, i.e. the OK buttons for route planning were much larger (at least 4x).

That's the kind of thing I would likely complain to Pioneer about, both by telephone and in print (email).

That's the only way these things will ever get rectified.

and you never know when it will be too late:

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20101006/od_afp/canadatransportpoliceoffbeat_20101006163413

  16. And, like clockwork, the daily email push from Amazon. This time it's a little less: 25%, and, from what I see, the z120 and x920 aren't listed in the "100" products. However, I degress.

It's amazing what you can achieve on the phone with a CSR and a smile :)

  17. at these prices, there's not much competition for the x920

Oh yeah for sure. I'm looking at $630 for everything, that's the wire harness, ground loop isolators, dash trim kit and backup cam. That's pretty good considering a shop would probably charge upwards of $1,000 for a comparable setup.

If you're installing yourself, be super-careful to NOT plug any RCA connections to the unit while the power's on or the grounding wires haven't been connected. Pioneer has some internal fuses that fry easily if either of these things happen, and then you have a brick.

So, disconnect battery, ground unit, make connections, and then hook the battery back up after all that's been done.

  18. Same experience here. Factory bluetooth for calls on our Sequoia was okay and the Pioneer is likewise just okay. I'll admit I hardly ever use the feature so I'm not too picky about it.

Alot of people are kicking the crap out of these two units on this forum, and it just doesn't seem warranted considering the cost and complexity of these units. While it would be nice if EVERYTHING was perfect, the last time I bought a perfect electronic device was a Bosch dishwasher, and its' utensil holder could do with a re-design, so even it isn't perfect. lol.

Even OEM units, which are finely (?) tuned to each respective vehicle, still sound like your talking on a wireless speaker phone. When someone tells me their Bluetooth connection sounds like your on a "wired" connection, I have a really hard time believing them. I guess I'm not important enough to spend all my time in the car talking on the phone, so I too will likely never have to live the horror of the Bluetooth. Oh darn.
