  1. You're not the only one. Mine will also jump around at times, but my biggest issue is how far off it is for turns. Turns can be anywhere from 50ft to 300ft off from when I actually made the turn. I mentioned this in another thread a while back, but even sitting at traffic light intersections, it will show I am a good distance back from where I actually am. My VSS is hooked up, and have checked that the speed pulse increase when driving. I did a full reset, also waited for the "calibration" turn lines to be completely full. I don't expect it to be exact since it is a commercial GPS, BUT the Z series GPS was pretty spot on.

  2. I have mentioned about the calibration being off, and the older models having the recalibration as well.  The map can be anywhere from 100ft to 500ft off at times, and my VSS IS hooked up, and all the data lines are full.  After it once did a reset on it's own for no apparent reason, I have reset it myself to try to get the map calibrated with no luck.

  3. I'll forgive you for thinking I'm a rookie at this LOL.  But yeah that was one of the first things I checked.  When I said "pulse" above, I was referring to the VSS, which then caused me to pull the deck to make sure all the connections were solid.  It only did it that day, and has worked as it should since.

  4. So I was driving around yesterday, and I had the map screen up on the 8000, but not actually using it to navigate.  I noticed the map paused, stuttered for a few seconds, then caught up to where I was.  I shrugged it off as it possibly losing the satellites for the moment and DR'd the track.  However, I was not in a covered area, the sky was clear, and this was not in some unusual area, as I drive on this particular road every day.  Then it did it again, and really made me pay attention to the screen to see how often it was doing it.  For approximately 5 miles, the map would pause and skip about every 10 seconds or so, then catch up to my location.  As soon as I got home, I pulled the deck, checked to make sure all the connections were solid, and put everything back together.  Drove around again, checked to make sure the pulse was changing, and that I actually had a connection with the satellites, and the map scrolling along as it should.  Today, I checked everything again, and this time all of the 3D calibration info had been reset, but none of the other information or settings had been reset.  So I know it didn't lose power and do a full reset, and before someone asks, NO I did not reset the calibration info by accident.  You really can't reset it by accident, once you touch the button, it will ask for a confirmation.  So now that you have the full info of what's going on, anyone else experience this, or have any ideas as to what is causing it.

  5. There's an option you can enable that gives you additional announcement about approaching navigation, I haven't enabled mine maybe I'll try it tomorrow... but from how the manual describes it it sounds like instead of it saying "In 800 feet turn left" it'll give you an additional warning at 1600 feet for example.

Yep already have that set...like tekkie and I said, it's the verbose level that you are talking about.  It does get to be a bit annoying at times, especially when turns are very close together.

  6. There is an option disabled by default which provides you with advanced navigation instructions. sounds like you might need it. i haven't tried it myself yet tho.

If you're talking about the verbosity level of guidance, I already have that set to verbose.  Otherwise, I have no idea of what advanced navigation instructions you are referring to.

  7. I'm considering upgrading from my Z120BT to a 8000NEX.  I am a relative newbie at DIY installation, but did manage to install my Z120BT a couple of years ago (it took me a long time and a lot of anxiety!).   I have read that the harness is the same for the Z150BT and am assuming it's the same case for the Z120BT.

Would installing the 8000NEX simply involve unplugging and pulling out the Z120BT, and plugging in the 8000NEX into the same harness?

Would there be any other need to splice into wires, etc.?

Would the 8000NEX continue to work with the steering wheel controls?

Would the parking brake bypass currently installed on the Z120BT still work (would it use the existing wires that were bypassed), or would I need to do something like that again?

I have a 2010 Prius, and installed the PAC SWI-PS which currently works with the Z120BT for steering wheel controls.  The Z120BT is installed with a Metra 70-1761 harness, if it matters.

I'm basically just wondering how much work it would take for me to swap in the 8000NEX.

Thanks in advance for any guidance from you pros.

If the harness on the Z120 is the same as the Z110, no it is not as simple as unplugging and plugging it in.  The plug is slightly different, as the fuse on the Z110 is in a different spot than on the NEX, and there is a piece of plastic on the Z's plug that sticks out to protect the fuse which will stop you from simply plugging it in to the NEX.  If anyone has the Z120 they can chime in to confirm the plugs are different.  However, if you did the wiring for Z120, wiring it up for the NEX is just as simple.  I clipped and matched each wire one by one between the harnesses, the only difference is DO NOT use the mute wire to ground on the NEX as part of the bypass.  Hope this helps you.

  8. In the past with the previous Z series it can take as much as 1K miles for the unit to calibrate and to reach its max accuracy. You may need to put more miles on yours.

Yeah I was hoping once the calibration lines were full, that it will have corrected the distance error, so I am giving it some time.  It isn't too bad of an issue, but it does concern me that a newer units GPS is not as good as an older unit...for now.  Otherwise, I love the NEX.

The one feature that I really like is that it does not dim the unit when you turn the headlights on during the day, it will wait until sunset to actually switch the unit to nighttime driving. That caught me by surprise the first time it did it, as I was thinking something was wrong with the switch when I turned the lights on while driving in the rain during the day and I was expecting it to switch to night driving like the old AVICs would do.  It's those little things like that go a long way.

  9. If I'm reading this correctly your using the gps antenna from the Z110, I would disconnect that, and put in the one that came with the nex, you never know, it's worth a shot because I know I was annoyed as hell until I switched my icon to figure it out.

Yep, thought about that as well.  I unplugged the old antenna, and instead of going through the trouble of running the new wire behind the dash, I ran the wire back out the front of the dash, with the dash kit left off so it wouldn't pinch the wire, and put the antenna on the metal pad on the dash to see if the results were going to be different...this was done right after the initial install, and test drive.  That is how I came to the conclusion that the antennas were exactly the same.  I did a 20 mile loop with it like that, and the distance that it was off was the same as the old antenna.  As I said before, the Z110 was spot on with turns, and gained less satellites than the NEX does.  If I get it figured out, I will be sure to post an update as to what was done to fix it.

  10. Maybe your gps signal is not accurate. Is your vss wire hooked up??

Yes VSS is hooked up, I am getting the speed pulses, AND the speed readout is accurate on the NEX compared to my speedo, and several different GPS apps I have used to test it.  I have the nav set to verbose so that way I get a far enough heads up when I am in an unfamiliar area to really start paying attention until I can get this figured out.

  11. Do you have the antenna on the metallic pad it came with?

Yes, I had an Avic Z110 upgraded to Z140 software, so it has the same GPS antenna, and pad, with nothing blocking it.  I have also checked the GPS connection, and it's receiving either 12 or 13 satellites as I am driving around.  The Z110 would only see 11, so I have somehow gained 2 satellites, but tracking is slightly off LOL.

  12. My experience so far with the NEX 8000 is that I arrive at my turns anywhere from 2-5 seconds before the Nav says to actually turn, and then the voice gets cut off because I am already turning.  I can be sitting right at the intersection light, and the nav will say I have anywhere from 100-300ft before my turn.  Luckily I only use the nav as a reference, and I actually pay attention to the street signs. I have the GPS antenna on my dash in the exact location as the old one that would be pretty spot on with the turns.  Navigation redirection is fairly quick, and I have purposely missed turns to see where it will try to reroute. 90% of the time it will send me to the correct point, or smart enough to tell me to turn around at the next available spot.  There have been a few times where it sent me on some wild turns that made no sense at all.  That being said, some of the reroutes will be based on the setting you have for fast, shortest etc... In the old Avics I do believe there was a way to correct the position/location of where you were to adjust the GPS.  I haven't taken the time to look for it on this unit yet, if it even exists.

  13. I used the mute wire to interface with an onstar module.

Yep I think that is what it may be intended for, to mute other connected accessories.  As the guy above you said, that mute wire used to get moved over in the harness, and it was not a standalone wire like it is now.  Once I had the "aha moment" and clipped it from ground, everything worked like it's supposed to. Up until that point I was pulling RCA's, and checking fuses on the amps, and got to the point of thinking I may have a defective unit.

  14. Well since no one chimed in, I will add an oh by the way do not do this type update.  As previously stated, the mute wire used to be used as part of the bypass in previous Avic's, so I wired it the same way as the old Avic...mute to ground.  Yeah not a good idea, just leave the mute wire alone. The EQ, subwoofer, rear out, and a few other settings that I can't remember dealing with the sound will all be grayed out.  If you have an amp for subwoofers, and use the inputs for the subs, you will only get sound from your door speakers (that's how I initially noticed something was wrong), and you will not be able to change the volume up/down/mute from it being set at 12.  Hopefully this will help or stop anyone else from wiring it that way and save them lots of time and frustration.

  15. Do any of you have the mute wire connected for any reason?  I know in previous bypass methods the mute wire was used in conjunction with grounding the parking brake.  I already have the unit bypassed using the new quadrant method, but curious if anyone uses the mute wire for anything.

  16. I finally received it on Monday, I'm not happy how they shipped it. they shoved it into a USPS box with no packing material and it didn't even cover the entire surface of the box and shipped it UPS Ground. Part of the pioneer box was showing and the corner of the box was damaged, but no physical damage to the unit. I'll never buy from them again. Liza promised to upgrade the shipping which she also didn't do.

I finally received mine Monday as well.  At least it was in a full size box, but it did not have any padding except for what was inside the Pioneer box itself.  Not really a big deal to me, as long as it arrived with no damage.  As with you, I will never buy anything from them again, the whole ordering ordeal left a sour taste.  I might have been ok if it was just an isolated thing, but you, and another person went through the same thing as myself.  I looked at a few other items they have for sale, and knew right away I would never buy anything else from them, and the Avic just happened to be the best deal at the time I purchased it.  Prime example, they have the current version AppleTV for $127, when you can get it at any store, or direct from Apple for $99 + tax.  I understand they're trying to make a profit, but wow.  Maybe the markup covers the so called free shipping.

  17. Did you wind up receiving yours? I just tracked mine because I hadn't received any updates and the last scan shows it was in Jacksonville, FL 2 days ago is now "Delayed due to severe weather" with no expected delivery date. UPS can't tell me where the package is or when I can expect it. Gotta love it.

You may want to call them again.  I had to call for the third day in a row, and my tracking finally updated, its in Hollywood, Fl and will supposedly arrive on Monday.

  18. I don't blame you on being nervous.  I'm still going back and forth between ordering from Crutchfield or Amazon.

Over on the Subaru Forester forums BigEasy026 got his from Amazon through Crawford.  He said it came in on time and was flawless and works.  I pointed him to these forums because he tried doing the relay bypass and told him he needed to just ground the parking wire directly and follow the official bypass thread.

Here's his post and it has a picture of the 8000NEX installed http://www.subaruforester.org/vbulletin/3415681-post13.html

I was told the "issue" was in the warehouse, it was listed as in stock, when in fact it was not, and they had to wait for a new shipment to arrive which would have been the 29th.  The other guy says his will arrive Friday, but all I have received is a tracking number. I check the tracking, and it says it has not arrived at the UPS shipping facility to give an estimated delivery date.

  19. I bought mine last week for $980 from Amazon (fulfilled by CrawfordSuperStore), my order sat for 4 days not getting shipped and the price jumped up to $1050, then the unit disappeared altogether from their store... they just finally shipped it last night... supposedly it'll arrive Friday.. I was skeptical I'd get it, but looks like it's on its way.

    -Keith

Ahhh you are the other person who I was told bought from Crawford, and we both are on top of the list to get them shipped.  The order sat there for a few days, until I emailed Saturday them to find out the status, and then was told to call on Monday (28th) to find out what was up.  Liza (Lisa) turned out to be helpful, but I too am still a bit skeptical until I have it in my hands, and powered up and working in my truck.

  20. If you chose USB mode,

You can have usb2 working with an iPod as well as send and receive calls through Bluetooth with your phone it will work that way.

In my tests you can not play Pandora until you disconnect the iPod if you have chosen USB As your connection in the SMARTPHONE setup.

Thanks for the answer, as that would have been my only deal breaker.
