  1. Well I trimmed all the cables and removed the insulation to put them all in to be sure that they were getting good contact with the amp.

I got the sub working and now both front sets working but no rears still.

The fronts were not working on both left/right because I had the pair connected wrong. I have them bridged and had the wires in the wrong holes.

But the rears still bug me.

Getting closer to the fix. The key is that when you pull stuff apart and you label the wires....take a note of the settings on the amp in the even that you move them by accident!

  2. I have the Z2 and a JLAudio 500/5 amp in my car.

I broke down and took the amp to an installer to have them tweak the system after I made a royal mess of the gains and filters one day.

So last night I went and disconnected the amp, the power lines, and RCAs to move the amp in the trunk and connect new brackets for the new location.

Before doing so I labelled all the lines so I could put them all back right were they were. So why does the left front speaker work and sub but nothing else?

I checked the speaker wires and the speakers are all working when using a D-size battery to 'pop' the speakers.

Here is what I did and in the order I did it. Maybe someone can point out where I messed up.

    1. disconnected the battery

    2. disconnected the power cable at the fuse and installed a longer one

    3. connected new power cable back onto amp

    4. re-routed ground cable and connected it back to amp.

    5. re-routed remote line and connected it back to amp.

    6. re-routed speaker leads and RCAs and connected them back to amp.

    7. connected ground cable back to battery

    8. turned on key to check system

    9. no sound at all

    10. checked RCAs and found nothing loose

    11. checked speaker leads and found a few not pushed in all the way and screwed down well.

    12. checked all connections and got sound out of left front and sub only.

    13. re-booted Z2, no change in set up.

    14. disconnected all speaker leads and checked yet again for sound with battery, no loose connections.

So what am I missing or doing out of order?

The main fuse on the power lead is not popped nor is the amp overheating.

It worked one day, I disconnect it and move it a few feet and nothing happens.

The JL amp doesn't have a re-boot button anywhere that I can see either.

Is there some order of connection that is required when connecting an amp?

I bet if I go to the shop again now that I have played with all the settings thinking that I may have bumped them that they will simply connect all this up in 5 minutes and charge me for an hour!!!

  3. Okay so one of my cables isn't plugged in then.

I open up the pages for the install for the XM module and it shows one way. Black to blue, XM to head unit.

Open up the pages for the Z2 install and it talks about something different. Black to black, XM to head unit. I think that I got lost when the Z2 papers show other stuff inline and I figured that I didn't need them so I didn't follow the path for the one cable.

  4. Took the amp to a place on Friday and they confirmed that in fact the channels were not working. They explained that it could be very simple or that when or if the amp reaches JL, they will likely just pull the board out and send it back with a new board inside. We don't know since the vendor I bought it from will decide what to do for me.

So about now the amp should be nearing its home in CA and sometime on Tuesday I should know what the vendors plan of action will be.

But the great thing is knowing that my first install in over 20 years wasn't wrong! My last install was also a Pioneer Supertuner but was back when they first came out with the flat faced units that pulled off for security. Back then I had this issue with not knowing about wire sizes and voltage.

Lucky for me that today everything is labelled well.

  5. I have the amp and 3 authorized dealers lined up to take it to, (assuming some are too busy to do it).

I also have submitted the form to the company that I bought it from to take it back and fix/replace the unit.

JL will also take it back if it is proven to be a defect. I'm still within my 90 warranty on the unit.

    B-

Time well spent last night. Thanks for taking time out of your day to help with this. When I got off the phone I tested all the other speaker leads and they all 'pop' which tells me that my connections are sound.

The pity party is over and I am moving on to the trim surround. This part I can do without bowing to needing help!

  6. Okay so it has been just over a week and I have gone over everything again, this making it the second complete review of my work.

All the connections to the Z2 are made except for the Mute, ILL (which nobody on the porsche site knows), and the antenna adapter (which the ones that I have been told about are wrong).

The car is a 2003 911, the amp I am using is a 500/5 JL.

All the connections are up and running and the XM is active enough for me to get the ID off the screen.

The problem that I have is that I am ONLY getting the sub frequencies and nothing else. No fronts. No rears. ONLY SUB channel working.

I have unplugged and plugged in the RCAs again to be sure of a tight fit and nothing works.

Today I get home and actually read the Z2 book to be certain as to what it may be that I need to turn on/off.

I find page 158 of the book that talks about turning the 'Rear SP' button to FULL. Funny thing is that this button is NOT active.

Where oh where have I gone wrong?

I have been prying into the assistance of another user on this board and it isn't fair of me to hound him much longer so I will bug the faithful for help.

Why is the 'Rear Sp' button not active and is this possibly the reason why Front/Rear output to the amp is cut off?

For the record, I have done searches these last 2 days and much of the info that I found didn't seem to be specific to what I have done wrong. Many results were of people grounding out their speaker wires by accident. This isn't the case with me-I checked!

    bob.

  7. But this is opposite of what the amp directions tell me.

The way it reads, it is telling me that if I want fader control at the head unit that I will need to power the fronts via a different power source.

  8. So at long last I finally have all the piece of the puzzle to do the installation of this very fine Z2 toy.

I thought that I would do something out of context for me and actually 'read' the instructions of all the parts before heading into it blind. This is where the amp threw me a curve.

The amp I chose for the installation in my car (2003 911), is a JL 500/5 unit. I thought it best in my car due to the 12 speaker system (still stock for now) and the ability to filter out the high, low, mids independantly. But here is where I was reading something that was very new to me and I would like to know how the Z2 can be used in this manner.

"...a source unit or processor with front and rear outputs is required..."

What does it mean specifically by 'source unit'? Is it referencing the head unit?

The JL unit I picked allows for about 7 different set ups to apply to a variety of ears and car layouts. What I want is the one that talks about this additional source unit which I may or may not be able to use.

It goes on to say that using the set up that I want will allow me to,

"...have the ability to fade or control the level of the subwoofer channel relative to the mid and high-frquency channels.".

  9. I have read enough here and on the Pioneer site that talks about burning the tunes to the hard drive while listening to the song but I don't recall reading anything that talks about how to transfer the tunes in another way.

Is this the only way to get the music to the drive? It seems like this would take a very long time to upload tunes 1 by 1 and if you aren't in the car long enough to hear a song all the way through.

  10. Let me see if I get this point right.

With the ILL wire hooked up....you drive off down the road and it starts to piss out. The wipers come on and in some cars this will turn the lights on automatically even if it's still quite bright out. So the unit will know if it's day or night versus having the lights on all the time?

And if you are someone that turns the lights on during the day or long trips, the ILL wire won't be dimming the unit?
