  1. Try going to a place where you are confident of the location, like an intersection (please chose a secluded street because you will be here for about 3 minutes). Then go into the settings and try to edit your position. I can't remember off the top of my head exactly how to do it, I'd have to go check it and post the instructions later, but if you just fumble through your menus I guarante that you will find the feature that allows you to "edit your current position". Try to do this and adjust it to exactly where you are at the intersection. See if this helps, hopefully this is all you need to "recalibrate" the sensors inside. Otherwise, it may be bad gyros inside? Not sure about that, so don't take my word for that one. Perhaps the previous owner "edited" his position and now you need to do the same thing. Good luck and keep us posted.

  2. Also, one more thing. Your user's manual is your best friend. I know it looks intimidating, it's pretty big, I must admit. (That's what she said... sorry, couldn't help myself) However, most of your questions can be answered by looking them up in the manual. If nothing else, Pioneer makes VERY thorough users manuals.

  3. OK, I know you have had these questions for a while, so I'll try to answer them best I can, but you probably already have the answers. The CD-RB10 allows you to hook up an audio source via RCA cables to your AUX IN port. The CD-RB20 allows you to do the same thing, however, it also allows you to daisy chain another piece of hardware via the IP bus where the CD-RB10 will not. The CD-RB20 also seems to have it's own power supply, so you would need to consider that in your wiring scheme, as you would have to splice additional wires in. If you are planning on adding XM, then you will need to go with the CD-RB20. When you get an XM tuner, make sure you get the GEX-P920XM and not the GEX-P910XM. The 920 allows more characters to be displayed on the screen and will have the new stations on it, plus it uses a much better antenna. If you are intersted in XM Navtraffic subscription and it's available in your area, which I just checked and it seems to have only one road in your area, so I don't recommend it (however Toronto seemed to be covered quite well), but you would want the GEX-P10XMT which will give you the radio and the traffic in one unit. As far as the dash kits go, get the one you like the looks of the best. No, you will most likely not need the trim ring with a DD installation, however, if it's a cheap or home-made dash kit, you might. You can always get one later, so install it and then decide whether or not you actually need it. The VSS must be hooked up for accurate GPS location. The GPS system uses a hybrid locator that takes a combination of your GPS location, altitude, car attitude, GPS speed and VSS signal to accurately calculate your location. If any of those things are missing, the system will still try to calculate your location to the best of it's ability, but it may be innacurate at times. For instance, when you go into a tunnel and you lose GPS connection with the satellites, the unit relys on the internal gyros and the VSS to "guestimate" your current position until the GPS satellites are back in view. My advice is, don't be lazy, find your VSS (which isn't hard if you do a little research on the internet, i.e. google: VSS in Chevy Cobalt) and make all the proper connections. You will have a better experience with your unit.

Hope this answers your questions to your satisfaction. If not, feel free to post more questions.

  4. I have an iphone4 connected via BT, with the same image as you, and I do not have this problem. When you activate voice recognition, are you touching the screen or using a remote control? If touching the screen, try to recalibrate the touch screen.

Currently I also have an iP4 via BT and I use the remote. I never thought to try the screen to dial, so I will try that, but I usually use the voice commands because Tennessee is a hands free state. I wonder what the problem could be? Should I call Pioneer? I wish I knew someone else with a Z1 upgraded to a Z3. I'm wondering if that has anything to do with it. If more people would please chime in, I'd like to know if it specific to my unit or something else. I'll record a video of it on my iP and post it to YouTube and link it here so you can see what I'm doing and tell me if I'm doing something wrong. Give me a day to get it posted.

  5. I post in my other thread about this.

    What Garrett's warrenty???

These eBay guys have very good feedback and are power sellers. I don't think they get feedback and reputations by having bad products.

Like I said no problem with Garrett product just the price is alot more then all the the people who sell then. When I compare I look at this stuff

    Same harddrives

    Same software/firmware upgrades

    Ebay has bigger harddrive 80gig

    eBay has warrenty does he??

I just can see why his is almost double the eBay ones. Maybe he can't get the harddrives as cheap I don't know. I like to shop around like I said before. If the eBay guys has a bad rep or feedback history then of course I would pay more for someone who doesn't get bad feedback. BUT when they are both very comparable minus price I have a hard time spending $60+

Let me thrown my $0.02 worth. You can certainly try to save some money and get a drive from someone on eBay *CLAIMING* that their drive is suitable, but really isn't Garret uses automotve grade drives which are important because they are tested against vibration and have a much higher temperature range tolerance. They are NOT I repeat ***NOT*** the same drives. Just because they are the same physical size, doesn't make them the same. As for the 80GB, you will never be able to use it. If you are big into numbers, then you should go waste your money on eBay and stop asking questions, if you really care about what you put in your car, then listen to the advice that has already been given to you and is being repeated again. If you do some research, you will find that you can't even really fill up a 60GB drive fully because of the album limit imposed by the firmware on the unit itself. The bigger drive is wasted, so don't worry so much about numbers, worry about drive QUALITY. Garret's is better. Garret will always give you the absolute latest upgrade available at the time you purchase the drive, including the latest Gracenote database and XM/Sirrius pictures. Who knows what you get on eBay? If you think you will be able to track down an eBay seller for a warantee repair, then you obviously don't do much business on eBay as the rest of us do. I can say from personal experience that Garret's communication is top notch. He answers all questions thouroughly, honestly, and promptly.

I have bought from Garret and you can see my write up on his drive purchase thread if you wonder about the quality of service. Good luck on eBay, because it seems to me that you have your mind made up already and are just trolling for someone to tell you to go buy on eBay. You won't find anyone like that here, Garret has proven himself to be better than anyone despite the higher cost (for better quality drives that you won't HAVE to warranty) he more than makes up for it in quality service and convenience.

Good luck with whatever route you choose... but you will truely need the luck if you decide to go on eBay.

  6. I recently updated my Z1 to a Z3 and have the following issue:

Whenever I use the voice command unit to dial a number, either a favorite (1-5) or out of my phone book, it puts a crosshairs on my current location on the map, then won't move. My position updates, and I can see my arrow move off the screen but the screen stays stationary, as if marking where I made my call from. I have to hit the "map" button in order to get the map to refresh and return to normal. This never occured on my Z1. Is this a glitch/"feature" of the Z3 software or another issue? Is there some setting that I'm missing or a work around? The point of using hands free is to be hands free. Now, after I hang up, it restores the map screen to normal, but an extended conversation can leave me wondering what turn to take next.

    Any information would be appreciated...

  7. Well, it's really weird, because it started working again mysteriously. It found exactly where I was and now shows 10/12 satellite connections. I was actually just about to pull the unit out and check the connection, but I'm gonna leave it alone until it does it again, or I have to pull it out for another reason.

Thx for the suggestion tho and I will check that next time.

  8. Unfortunately, your problem is with XM, not the AVIC. The XM Traffic option is a service provided by XM that sends traffic information to your satellite reciever and displays the traffic information on your "XM Traffic Enabled" unit. IMHO, the XM Traffic coverage SUX!!! Mostly because I have never been in a city that has offered it, so it's basically an extra feature for me. I'm not sure why they never really expanded on this, but my guess is that it just wasn't economically feasable to devolop XM Traffic for more citites when not many of the current navigation systems support it. Perhaps in the future, as more navigations systems seem to be carrying it, they will develop more, but for now, you are stuck with whatever XM gives you.

Also, I want to add, that none of the traffic information is stored anywhere on your AVIC. Not in internal memory, not on the HDD, no where. So the upgrade will make no difference. The only information displayed (coverage) will be what is sent by XM and recieved by your antenna.

Here is the coverage map of Detroit from the XM website...

    http://www.xmradio.com/images/navtraffic/maps/detroit.jpg

If you aren't getting information from a road that is highlighted on the map, you need to contact XM directly. Don't expect to see traffic updates on the road in front of your house, these are major roads only. More than likely, it's a problem with them, not your AVIC.

  9. I'm not sure that more can be said than the previous 20 pages of positive posts, but I will add my kudos because he (Garret) deserves all the praise he has gotten. I paid him late on one day and was promply emailed a tracking number and receipt that evening. Three days later (Sat, Sun, Holiday) I got my drive, well packaged and VERY protected.

Here is what you need to know, from a computer technician's perspective (mine), to be reassured that Garret is not only a professional, but really knows his stuff. I recieved my drive packaged in a box, with packing peanuts inside, wrapped in bubble wrap (along with the coolest tiny tool I have ever seen, I LOVE IT! thanks Garret) and inserted into a static free ESD bag. The last part is what I want to draw your attention to. Anyone who knows anything about sensitive mini-electronics knows that static electricity, even in small doses, can permenantly destroy devices... like laptop hard drives. Garret has such an attention to detail that he's got this part covered by shipping it in an ESD bag, this is done by someone who KNOWS WHAT HE'S DOING. That is the #1 reason you shouldn't buy from anyone on eBay.

Garret is honest too. Even though he could have tried to convince me to buy the larger drive to make more money, he listened to my needs and recommended the smaller drive... because that's what I needed! I would have no hesitation buying from Garret again.

I waited for the 2010 maps to come out and I'm glad I did. I upgraded an original Z1 and now have the lastest Z3 and I seriously couldn't be happier. If you are on the fence about getting his drive, GET OFF IT and buy one. The installation was easy, the operating system image is flawless, and his support before, during, and after the sale is unbeatable.

    Thanks again Garret!

  10. I have this problem sometimes as well. I have narrowed it down to the parking brake wire. I was not getting a good ground on the parking brake wire and it was confusing the AVIC. There are a CRAP TON of wires behind your unit, sometimes, the connections get loose and need to be tightened or just moved into a position where the harness has a little more room to "breathe". Once your parking brake wire activates the lockout, it cannot be cleared until the unit is reset, that is why it would work for a while for you after you reset it (it did for me as well), but then I would hit a bump in the road, disturb the wire behind the radio, and it would get locked again.

Bottom line here is to check the connections of all your wires, especially ones that you are grounding. And please, PLEASE do not just "tie in" your wires to the black ground wire. If you have to ground something, go get a ring terminal, crimp your wire to that, find a bolt and ground it properly to the chassis.

  11. I am having the same problem with my Z1. But instead of what you are experiencing, I am getting a message on my hardware screen that says, "NOK" after the satellite section, with a message that states that there is a problem with my antenna. I am going to buy a new antenna and see of that helps, I would recommend you do the same, an aftermarket, non-Pioneer model is going for about $10 on eBay.

  12. To add, and not to sound like a jerk, did you check to see that you installed your "brain" unit properly? If you installed it backwards, i.e. the -> (arrow) pointing the wrong way, it may show your orientation improperly on your navigation screen.

Make sure you have good satellite links, the unit should try to self-correct your orientation if it senses you moving in a particular direction, unless you have the brain unit installed backwards, then it will just think you are going in reverse.

  13. What happens when you remove the update CD? What is the boot sequence then? I wanna say that I've heard somewhere before that you will get that message sometimes but upon reboot without the CD in, it's fine. Also, have you tried to download and burn the update on a different CD or manually choosing a slower write speed? Don't forget that when you burn a CD, you can have the burning program test it to make sure it burned properly, though it takes longer, you will get a better burn.

  14. I'm looking at the Pioneer website and the GEX-P10HD is only compatible with the following units:

    FH-P800BT, FH-P8000BT, DEH-P700BT, DEH-P7000BT

    With the additional note:

"External Control" capable with other Pioneer IP-Bus headunits, a/v receivers and navigation systems, with some limitations of display and control. Please review Owner's Manual(s) for more details.

My question to you is, what does the Owner's Manual for the Z2 say about HD radio? I wasn't aware that the "Z"s were HD ready.

This could explain the problem perhaps?

  15. Hey everyone,

I've done a quick search, but didn't come up with anything on the first couple of pages. I've seen this before I think, but it may be a good time to renew the discussion. I just got a new iPhone 3G. No problems pairing, etc, however, when I make a call now, it seems that the person I'm calling just can't hear me anymore. I found that if you hit the volume rocker when a call is connected it changed the BT volume, but I've got it all the way up and people still can't hear me. It works fine with my old phone, which was a Cingular 8525 PDA phone, but the iPhone is very quiet on the receiving end.

Any recommendations? Is this a known problem with / without a resolution? I've got a Z1 with the original HD for now (I had to reinstall it after my Z2 imaged 40GB drive crapped itself). Eventually I will get the Z3 drive, but until I can put the money together, is there some kind of firmware update that I'm missing on my Z1?

    Thanks all.

  16. OK guys. First off... along with everyone else, I want to express my sincere gratitude for all the effort, personal sacrifice, and general question flogging that those who have planned and supported this upgrade have endured. <3

Now for my experience, which was reletively painless, but a few lessons learned that I wanted to share with everyone.

I bought the Toshiba MK4019GAX (seems to be synonymous with the MK4026GAX) based on everyone's recommendation of 40GB being the max size, the 16MB cache and 5400RPM speed. Disabling the security was a breeze, but I went about it a different route. I have an old Dell Inspiron laptop and a USB floppy drive. I used the instructions in this topic to download and create the floppy disk. Then I installed the HD in the laptop (replacing the one that was in it) and booted from the USB floppy drive. Then followed the rest of the instructions and was sucessful. I then removed the drive and put it in a USB enclosure I got from Radio Shack called the Mad Dog Mega Vault. (Note: I live in a po-dunk town and was unable to find the IDE adapter locally, so I went this route also so that I can have a portable drive) I then connected the drive to my computer via USB.

I have windows Vista, so I can vouch that this will work for a vista machine. I downloaded the image from Big Floppy (Big Props dude) and extracted it to my local HD. I then used the instructions in this topic to access disk manager through control panel. It told me that I had to format the disk, so I did. I didn't know whether it mattered or not if I assigned it a drive letter, so at first, I didn't, but then Vista couldn't see the drive, so I went back and assigned it the next drive letter. NOTE: long story short, it does not matter at all if you assign it a drive letter, the AVIC will ignore the drive letter, so go ahead and assign it a letter. Through trial and error, I found the best way to expand the partition without using a partitioning software was the following:

Load the image onto the HD as is. This will create the 4 partitions in the default "30GB" size. When it's finished, DELETE THE LAST 2 PARTITIONS. You will be left with the first 2 partitions and some unallocated space (19543KB to be exact). Create the next partition as a PRIMARY PARTITION (bootable). This is very important, as a logical partition will not be recognized by the AVIC. The partition size I chose was 19069MB. Then create the final PRIMARY PARTITION of size 574MB if you use the above number. Now use the Acronis True Image software to restore the last 2 partitions, one at a time, onto the final 2 partitions on the new HD. Be advised, you will have to reboot the computer when restoring each partition, this is necessary because it is a primary partition.

When you are completed, if you used my numbers, you are left with a drive that has the following:

    LDATA - 17.5GB [FAT32]

    SDATA - 572MB [FAT32]

    MSV - 18.6GB [FAT32]

    USER - 579MB [FAT32]

I then removed the hard drive from the enclosure and put it in the car. VOILA!!! :D The program started updating and then I had a Z2.

I've gotten the idea that I may put the Z2 image onto some DVD's. Similar to the 1GB chunks on the net, I will put them into 4GB chunks on a DVD. I suppose that I could also send them out to people at their request. First though, I am going to install the Z2 firmware update, the latest Gracenote CDDB and the bluetooth fix, if I can still find it. Then I'll back it up and make a new image. (This image will be for a 40GB drive or larger it won't fit on a 30GB drive). I am afraid I can't offer it for free due to the cost of the disks and the shipping, but I'm sure that I can arrange something. Also, I would be willing to do this for people and send out a complete, unlocked drive if people would desire that too.

The hard work is done, now it's just the time involved of replacing the music that is still locked on the old drive.

Thanks again! And I hope this write-up helps to clear up some of the questions. Feel free to PM me and I will respond.

  17. I was able to download the Z2 image from the newsgroups.

I have comcast so the URL is newsgroups.comcast.net and you use your primary comcast email and password. This is the first email account comcast set up for you when you first subscribed to the service. You can also call them and ask them what your email and password are.

It took about less than four hours to download all the files. My download speed was almost 800kbs, can't complain.

    I used NewsBin Pro 4.32 from http://www.download.com/NewsBin-Pro/3000-2164_4-10285921.html?tag=lst-2

    So give it a try!!

Zeke. I did give it a try, but I have NO idea how to use this program. I added alt.binaries.test to the group list... it seems to have downloaded something, but when I put "AVIC" in the find line, I get no files listed at all. Can you give me a quick how-to for finding this file?

    Thanks

  18. OK, I got the login information from my server, but SuperNZB is giving me an error 430: no such article. What does that mean? I was able to open the NZB, I can see all the files it wants to download, but it won't download them.

What am I doing wrong? I want to have this stuff downloaded PRIOR to buying a new hard drive. (Don't want the put the expensive cart before the horse)
