I have a 930. There is definitely a limit on the number of songs or the total size that the system loads into memory. I haven't checked, but I believe I can only see about 1200 songs. If the system does not load the songs into memory, then the songs are not available to be played at all. They will not be included in shuffle, and you can't browse to them. Because of the way it loads the contents of the card first, you will find that the more music you have on the card, the longer it takes before the music actually kicks on.
