  1. Wow, I don't know about anyone else, but all of those made me dizzy as hell! Maybe, instead of stretching/bending the image, use the crop feature. Other than that, can't say that I can complain about nice pics of Jessica Alba!

  2. From what I understand, you should be able to use most 6 CD Changers with the Avic Z2.

Also, if you're interested in DVD/Nav functioning while in motion (i.e. on road trips) then you may be better off going with a Z1 if you can find one, because it is bypassable, and unless I'm not up to date with these forums, the Z2 is still unbypassable.

  3. Yeah, you can go to that link and burn the CD yourself, or you can just call Pioneer's customer service, tell them that you have a Z1 with the ND-BT1 and are getting a big echo problem, and they will send the cd to you via UPS immediately (got mine 5 days after I called).

  4. I called about a week ago spoke with a person... and she said not until August... but she really was not for sure... I tell you I love their product but support and service really sucks... their people should be more informed...

To add to that... I called weekend support (they brag that they give extended weekend support for navigation) and they couldn't answer any of my questions (and trust me, they were all fairly routine questions, I'm sure) and they said to call back on Monday morning, because the weekend support does not have access to all the info that the regular support during the week does. ?!?!!?

Sooo... they're not using the same computers, hooked into the same database... trained the same by the same managerial team???? Wow, just wow.

  5. I think you're seeing a lot of refurbished ones because the Z1 is discontinued and the Z2 is the new model and there are many who are upgrading (just a thought... might not be the case though).

But, to ease your worry about Refurbished Z1s, I got one and had it installed over a week ago, and it looks and runs like new. Haven't had any problems at all with it yet (knock on wood). I saved about $500-$600 buying it and I could not be happier. But if the extra money spent is worth your piece of mind, I'd say get one new, if you can find one.

  6. Hey man,

I too have the Samsung D807 slider phone, and I have the same problem you're talking about.

My phone connects to the Avic Z1 unit flawlessly, but when I use the unit to make a call, it rings once, then says at the bottom of the avic screen (phone disconnected, or something like that) but my cell phone keeps ringing... once the other person answers, the phone reconnects to the avic and I can start the conversation through the mic and the car speakers. This is fine and dandy, I figured it was a built-in feature so that I could listen to the radio instead of the phone ringing.

But then, just this morning, someone tried to call me, it flashed up that they were calling on the avic screen, then immediately said "phone disconnected" and there was no where on the avic that I could push to answer the call... I had to push the Talk button on my cell phone and then it reconnected to the avic and I could continue the convo through the mic and the speakers.

That's when I realized that maybe this was not supposed to do this.

It's weird because all other functions of the phone work with the avic. I could transfer phone contacts (though it would disconnect between single transfers) and all calling functions work. It just disconnects when the phone is ringing (either calling someone else, or receiving a call). Very weird.

I haven't found ANYTHING on the Samsung D807 in here, other than this thread, so I'm not sure if it's a problem with the phone or if there's a setting in the avic that can be changed.

It must be our phones!!!!! Which totally sucks cause I really like the phone!! Ill have to try importing my phonebook again, becauase I had no luck at all last time. But regardless, my symptoms are the same as yours.

Yeah man, I'm with ya. I think the phone absolutely rocks! But, it might just be enough of a downfall for me to change phones just to not be disconnected at all. We'll see. Let me know if you switch phones and what you switch to (it sounds like we have similar tastes in phones! :D ) and if it works better.

  7. Hey guys,

Got my Z1 installed yesterday (it looks great!) and it turns out that it did not have the update on it, so I'm currently flashing my headlights to bypass the unit. Though people are telling me that they hear little to no echo when using my bluetooth phone through the Avic, I think I still want to do the Bluetooth update and then have my installer do the 07/06 Bypass of grounding the 2 wires.

My question is this: Has anyone ever done the bluetooth update then tried the 07/06 bypass and had it not work, and then been stuck with a Z1 unit that can't be bypassed? That is my one and only fear. Pioneer has already sent me the update cd (will be here any day now), but I'd rather have the older bypass and no update than have the update and take a risk that my Z1 bypass will go away and the 07/06 won't work either.

I searched the forums extensively, and though there are many topics talking about the Bluetooth update, I did not see one comment about not being able to do the 07/06 bypass after the update.

    Thanks guys for your help.

  9. They system could be powered up on a test bench. Then try the flash technique to bypass. If that don't work then it's 2 wire ground time. To make the avic think you flashed the lights the illuminaiton wire in the harness will have to be tapped to +12volts on the power supply for a second or so. Just follow his directions and tap the ill. wire to +12volts each time it states to turn on the parking lights.

This is where I got the test bench thing.

What are the risks in using that link to burn a CD and update my Z1 with it? Has there been a high success rate in updating the Z1 with this file?

Would it be possible to just have the installer do the 2 wire ground bypass, then if it quits working after 100 miles, then just do the update via CD? Would that work?

  10. Do you think it would be easier to just go ahead and do the Bluetooth update that I keep hearing about, and then have the installer do the 2 wire ground bypass?

If so, where can I find the bluetooth update and how do I load it up onto the Z1? If it costs money, then I may not want to do it.

The problem is, the installer I was going to go with does not have a "test bench", so I think he would have to install it into the car first to test it out.

  11. Hey Ducati, new development and I hope you can help (nothing is ever simple!),

I just received my refurbished unit in the mail today, and saw that the original manufacture date on it was on May 2006. I know this falls before the June/July 2006 date for the ground 2 wires, and that your circuit may be needed... however, I don't know if it was refurbished post July 2006 and was updated with the latest software. I guess my first question is, do you know any way that I could tell when it was refurbished (maybe by calling Pioneer and telling them the serial number off the unit?)?

Secondly, if there IS no sure way to find this out pre-install, then what is the best way to instruct the installer to go about bypassing it correctly? Should he just install it like he normally would, without grounding the wires, and the do the Light Flash Bypass to see if it works before closing up the dash? If it does, then keep it that way, and if it doesn't, then that probably means the unit is updated and he can proceed to grounding the 2 wires?

I know I'm probably making this more complex than it needs to be, but I just want to make sure it gets done right the first time, and I don't have to keep going back and spending more money, just to get this in my car properly and bypassed correctly.

Thanks for all your help so far, and I hope you can help me work this out.

  12. I purchased a refurb Z1 in February 2007, it worked perfectly out of the box. I also purchased an Avic D2 unit, and installed in friends car, it was also refurbised, worked fine.

Does anyone know if there is an update for the Avic Z1 navigation data base? I heard somthing about a software update was available thru a third party download site?

    Any info would be appreciated.

    thanks

    Mike

That's definitely reassuring to me. I'm scheduled to get this unit delivered today, so I'll let you all know how it turns out.

I think that there is going to be an update soon for the Z1, which will essentially turn it into the Z2 (probably will cost ~$250 like any other map update). But I've heard buzz around here that if you have your Z1 bypassed and you do the update, you will lose it, and all functions you had opened up while in motion.

  13. Ducati, Thanks so much for your great response! You made me feel a whole lot better. I think I will just print out your instructions, including the pictures, and take it to the installer and tell him to forget everything he ever knew was right, and follow the instructions to the T!

I'll keep you updated on the install (which should happen early next week) and let you know if all went well.

You really are a pillar of this forum, Ducati, and a priceless asset to all those in need. :D

  14. I spoke to an installer about bypassing my Z1 when he installs it next week and he said that he can do it, but that it will require a switch and that I have to switch it on and off whenever I want to have the unit be bypassed. I told him about this forum and ducati's helpful guide and that he would really only have to ground 2 wires (the parking break wire and then probably the TelMute wire) and he says that probably wouldn't work. Is that true? I hope not!

He also said that if he bypasses it, I won't be able to use the Nav Traffic function in the future, because it needs to pick up the motion of the car (?), or something like that.

Help guys! These so-called "experienced" installers don't seem to know as much as you all on these forums.

  15. Yeah, good point. To illustrate that point, I found a little car audio shop in kind of a shady part of Nashville. The entire store was probably about 800 square feet, and half of it was devoted to selling grills for cadillacs and impalas. The installer there was a short fat middle-aged mexican guy with a stained wife-beater on and could hardly speak a lick of english. They would charge me $150 total, parts and labor. Great deal, but I think that I would gladly pay double that price to ensure that it's going to be installed well, with no damage to my car.

You said you installed a backup cam on a hybrid. Was that tough? I've been really hesitant to get one installed on my hybrid, because the hybrid battery rests between the trunk and the back seats and if it is messed up during install, it could cost me between $3,000-$5,000 to get replaced! Was the hybrid you worked on the same way with the battery location? If so, was the wiring hard to accomplish with the cam?

  16. Thanks for your replies! Another question I had was if anyone has successfully installed a Rear View Backup Camera in a Civic Hybrid. It seems like it would be tricky, because the Hybrid Battery is located between the trunk space and the back seats. Feeding the wire through seems like it'd be a daunting task. Plus, I don't know if I trust any installer to do this without messing up the battery in any way. If the battery gets damaged it could cost around $4,000-$5,000 to replace!!!

Should I just not even take the risk and not get a camera installed, or is it completely safe and should be a fairly simple process?

  17. Hey everyone,

I've been calling around getting quotes on getting my Avic Z1 with Bluetooth module, iPod module and backup camera installed in my 2005 Honda Civic Hybrid, and I'm blown away by the price quotes ($300-$450 before tax!).

Anyone know of any places in or around Nashville, TN that can install for cheaper? I wish I knew how to do it myself, cuz it looks like I could save butt-loads of money, but I've never even installed a simple single-din cd player so I wouldn't want to try.

If anyone in this area knows how to install these units, I'm willing to pay decent money, as long as I can save a few bucks here and there.

I'm open to any advice you guys have. Should I try it myself? Should I call other places for quotes (i've only called major retailers... Circuit City, Best Buy, etc.). Are these prices reasonable, or am I getting ripped off?

    Thanks in advance.

  18. Hey guys (and girls),

I have an opportunity to purchase a Pioneer Refurbished Avic Z1 for $1199 + shipping, and it seems like a great deal, but usually I've shied away from Refurbished electronics. I've bought a few high-end HDTVs in the past couple of years, and never would go Refurbished.

What are your opinions on Refurbished Avic Z1's? Do you think I should go ahead and pull the trigger on it? It DOES come with a 90 day Pioneer warranty, so if I get it installed an find anything wrong, I could send it back for another unit (which is a nice piece of mind).

Anyone have any experience getting their unit refurbished by Pioneer? Any pro's and con's you all can think of? I really am nervous about refurbs, but it's a great deal!

Thanks for all you guys do in these forums!

  19. Haha, yeah, well, one of you guys is right!

We're both right. A true car enthusiast can appreciate ANY car for what it is. Im an import guy through and through but I have the utmost respect for the big block guys as well. Watching a late model mustang or f-body stand up on its rear wheels and then go ripping down the 1320 is a spectacle all itself. On the flip side of that, watching a 4 cylinder grocery getting import turn 10, 11, and 12 second passes is equally impressive.

    Stop the ignorance

    Very well said!

  20. Wow, you guys are pretty harsh on the guy! He was only trying to pass on info that he got in relation to the Z1 update and bypass for the Z2. The more people we get to pass on info that they found out about these units, the closer we'll get to finding the real truth, IMO.

By the way, don't try and flame me too... I'm not standing up for the guy and saying that he ISN'T full of crap, which he very well may be... I just think we don't need to take the stance of guilty until proven innocent.
