1. Making the device harder to remove does help, but is not the true resolution. If the thief is able to get into the car and relizes that there are different torx screws in, I dont believe they will throw their hands up and leave. Since they got that far and already risked so much, they will do what ever they can to get the unit out, meaning destroying as much around it as possible. The best and I believe the true resolution is for it to be known from Pioneer that if removed becomes dead. This is will be the biggest deterent for theives. But as I wrote above, I will not hold my breath for that time. So until then, I will be adding a beefier car alarm, one with a two-way transmitter, possibly different torx screw, maybe infra-red cctv inside the vehicle and tear gas on remote control. Hopefully that will keep the bastards away.

P.S. Gecko, since you are trying to create code for the s/w is it possible to add a 4 digit entry code at start up like windows CE 3.0 and PPC Windows 2000? I have an old Jornado 565 that I use daily, and that has a 4 digit entry code for security.
2. If you read my other post "Well... It finally happened" you would know that my AVIC Z-1 was stolen. I wrote an email to pioneer stating what happened and how dissapointed I am in the product and the lack of security. I got a response, to call Pioneer complaint line and disccuss the problem over the phone, so I did. I learned so much. The most important thing that I learned is that they have no tracking mechanisms for the registered products. Meaning there is no way to track the unit via serial number or registration. It is only for updats and future information. So, in my case if someone obtained my unit and registered it with pioneer using the same serial numbers, there will be no flag to pioneer stating that this product is already registered and possible stolen or different owner. The new person would receive updates with no problem. That is really dissapointing.

The other thing is that, at this time there is no security upgrade or one in progress for the unit????

The only encouraging thing that came from this phone call is that my email and complaint will be submitted to a superior as well as the navigation engineers. I also left my number and email address and maybe, just maybe I wll get contacted in the future by one of these. Time will only tell.

Okay, just an F.Y.I!
3. There is an alarm system installed. But unfortunately, living in an area where alarm sounds are as frquent as police sounds, it really does not hold the true effect. Okay maybe it is not that bad, but truelly I do no not think people respond as quickly or even respond at all when they hear car alarms go off these days. 99% of the time they go off accindently. But I am going to get an upgrade to one with a 2 way receiver, I would really like one that actually texts or calls the cell phone. Anyone know of such possibilty. I have already inquired about a CCTV with infrared system to my PPC for live feed to the car! I don't want to take anymore chances. The next step is to move into my truck :-)!!!

LOL,
4. Does anyone know the length of the antena wires for the xm/nav, HU and possibly the tv tuner. I have an expedition and runnung the wires from the middle of the roof, to the back via rain guard/roof rack, then all the way back to the front is quit lengthy. Will there be enough wires?
5. Way ahead of ya, and did not matter!! I had the unit in a ford and I used another old ford radio that I had as a decoy. I removed the face plate with keys and display from the old radio and placed it over the Z1 unit. Like most, it looked like a sloopy install of a factory radio, but if someone just walked by it would not make them look twice. I believe it had alot to do with the the gps and the xm antenni. They were on my dash inside the car. The person that took the unit, knew what they were doing and what they were coming from. Like I said in my original post, they just took the unit and the xm/nav adapter. Left other valuable and small things inside. The police said it was a strange thing, because they have never seen just the unit being taken, they usually take the small stuff aswell and the airbags. After explaining this was not "just an unit" they understood. So thinking more and more about it. I also beleive that thieves are getting more aware of the unit and lack of internal security. This make a very easy target, once they get in the car or truck. So something in this nature has to be resolved. The unit has to become dead when removed, simple as that.
When I do get another unit installed, I am going to have the antenni installed on the roof and in the middle with no signs of them what so ever.
Owning a truck, and a tall one, one is not able to see the roof and be curious what is inside.

I hope this gives some people some thought!
6.

As I walk to my car this moring, I see a few odd looking car parts and wires next to my car. As I walk closer and look in the window, angryly noticed that someone finally did it. They finally stole my AVIC Z-1. After taking a quick glance to see if anything else was stolen, I called the police. Yes they also took my bluetooth adapter and navtrafic receiver. They did leave the CD changer, game port, and other quite valuable items (I guess not valuable enough). So I filed a police report and the forensic fingerprinting unit came by to investigate. Besides minor damage to the dash, I guess they knew what they were only going for. Luckily, everything was insured and should be all replaced. Will I re-install it again....who knows. Most likely not at this present location of living. OH WELL!!!

P.S. I guess that is what happens when living in the New York area.
I have a couple questions...

you had additional coverage for that unit (AVIC-Z1), right?

and, if they damaged the auto, like the dash, that coverage was under your normal coverage, right?....so, a deductable would apply, correct?

my insurance (Nationwide) automaticily covers $1500.00 for the unit, but if they damage anything, it falls under the regular insurance, which I have a $500.00 deductable.

so, I called my insurance agent up, and wanted to add additional coverage, like another $1000.00 to the $1500.00 and they want another $80.00 per year.

I think that's to high, especially if there is damage and I'l have to at least pay $500.00 for the deductable on the damage.

how does your insurance work? Did you have to pay any out of pocket for the damage?
Well I have to say that I am lucky because I believe to have a very nice plan with Geico. I guess that is what happens when you use them for so many years with many cars. Well, I did get a rider just for the unit and installation and everything else for about $2800.00 and it was only an extra 30 bucks every 6 months, totalling the yearly payment to about $700-800. And the kicker was that I have only a $50.00 deductable. So basically they reimberressed me for the unit and everything, plus the appeared damage to my truck, and they took out the $50.00 at the time of cutting the check. So yea, all is good now. Just upset about the whole incident and complete loosing faith in the area, to believe it or not, they also took a bag for work which I had a book in there, which is like a bible and is not replacable. Or atleast all the added info that I put in myself. Oh yea, and the bag had alot of sentimental value :-( Oh well. Life goes on!!!
7. Okay, where do I start!! Thank you everyone for your input and suggestions. I came back from the claim adjusters and they reimbursed me already, check in hand, for the total amount of the installation and products, plus damage to the front dash unit. After being very happy about how quickly everything happened I was now able to put things back together and see the true damage. Pretty much the head unit and the xm/nav traf unit was ripped out and all the other wires besides those were cut. So basically I have some peripherals, game port, BT adapter, CD changer still present but the connection ends were cut off

Leads me to my next question. The CD changer was an old RF model that I barely used due to buring all my CD's in the HDD so not really worried about that. The game port is all right, just need to buy another $7.95 A/V cable to connect it.

What I would like to salvage if possible is the BT adapter, is there a way to connect a new IPBUS connector on it? Does cutting the connection wire due to theft, covered under the warranty? That is the only real salvagable part left. The rear camera, well, they cut 1 out of the 3 wires which should be fixable.

Oh yea, by the way! After putting back my factory radio, all the manufacturer car parts dash and so on are 99.9% in working order. Just one little scratch.

Okay now to you suggestions, i checked out that car alarm, was pretty impressed. I also checked out Crime Stopper Alarm system. I have a remote starter already Marrs 22 model, does anyone know if I can add a better alarm to that model with a 2 way receiver. Or does anyone know of a good alarm system with a learnable transmitter. I would hate to have 2 remotes plus a tramsmitter on my key chaine. And final question, yes I know this is long. Does anyone know of a product that will text your cell phone. Between work and other things, I have my phone on me more that my car keys.

Thanks again.
8. So I already wrote an email to Pioneer lets see if it starts a fire under their asses.

For Pasain NYC I live in the Staten Island/Brooklyn area!
What is up with the AVOX Mobile Jukebox 120GB "Mobile Tivo" How does that work. Maybe I will get that next time as well. And there will be a next time. I just have to think of a better security system. Maybe tear gas, that is triggered when the device tampered. Anyone know of any two way alarm systems that will notify by cell phone or pager if someone enters the car?

I other solution is to move. That seems the best and most likely at this time!!

10.
Just finished "Day 1" of the online "discussion". So far my initial impressions of the so-called discussion is very poor. There is no discussion at this point. It's more like, Pioneer asks a question, you answer it. There is nothing yet that specifies likes or dislikes about the Z1. Hopefully the next couple of days things will get better.
DITTO!!!
11. All of this has been a major concern of mine since the beginning. I can not truelly understand how something like this was not thought of by pioneer or micorsoft. I mean, I have one of the original, and I mean original MS PPC (Jornado-which I still abuse to this day) which back then, about 4 years ago has a 4 digit password security system to keep people out. And anything you think of these days has one, WiFi, cell phones, PDA's, laptops, etc. So with this day and age how can they miss this. I mean honestly, which such an advance of this AVIC unit, i would expect more than just a pin code security system. I would expect finger print recognition or retinal eye scan, ok the retina scan might be too much, but not the finger print. Newer laptops are coming out with it, and you can even purchase a peripheral for this.

This should be the number one priority by Pioneer or MS and should definitly not wait until the first true firmware upgrade to come around which is about 10-12 months after the product has been on the market.

I do not know about anyone else, but I got an email from Pioneer reveiwing the AVIC and filling out a short survey. At the bottom, there was a text box for additional comments, and I listed the same opinion there. Lets see what happens.
12. I too am looking for a way to transfer my outlook contacts to the Z1. I do not think there is a way but please, please correct me if I am wrong!!!

Honestly I think the outlook contacts or more informative than the contacts in the phone. Outlook includes address and phone number for each!
13. I placed my mic upper left side of driver side, on top of the hand rail (expedition 04) and have the sound come out of the right speaker. I believe I have it on like 3 bars or so, but basically what I did was called someone and spoke to them, and adjusted it while I was talking to them asking if they hear the echo. Eventually they did not. It is low but not that low, I would not be able to hear them if windows are done, but they would not be able to hear me either.

hope that helps.
14. Well, I just spent a few extra minutes adding my phone book manually!! Good thing I dont have that many contacts or friends :-( J/K.... My contract is almost up with Verizon and time to get a new phone. Does anyone have any suggestions. Previously, I mentioned thinking about getting the HP 6500w and switch to Cingular or Waiting for the Q to have wifi, as long as I am able to use the phone through the HU I am happy about that.

I would really prefer the ability to import my outlook contacts with addresses and phone numbers, which would be more benificial for the navigation and phone service. So if anyone finds a way or if it becomes "not impossible" please let me know.

Thanks
15. Hi, I finally got my blue tooth adapter installed and stopped the echoing!! Now I am working on transfering my address book to the head unit. When I try to do so, it disconnects, which I believe is correct, but it says it is okay to send contact list "from phone"! This is where I am not sure, I am not sure how to send from the phone? Also I tried to reconnect with blue tooth, and a message says "service not supported"!! Has anyone else got this message, or can anyone see what I am doing wrong? Or is this another Verizon Bluetooth bull shit issue which I was involved in the previous law suit and got nothing back. Arrrrggg :-)
16. It seems that some Circuit City's are caring the bluetooth adapter, and the online order are in stock. I found one store in the New York area, and one store in the CT area. They are selling it for a bit more than say crutchfield; 159.99 compared to 119.99 but it may be worth it. I also called crutchfield to see if they had any idea of when Pioneer will be shipping more to them, and of course they had no idea.

So if you want the bluetooth adapter, and willing to pay a little more, then check your local CC's or go online. Also if you order online for delivery or store pick up, I found this random coupon to give 10% off, it worked for me :-)

New! 10% OFF $99+ regular priced items
coupon code: 24AB5NRA5J
restrictions: Excludes video game hardware, Verizon, select Polk, Bose, Velodyne, Apple iPod, "Web Only" specials on computers, giftcards, outlet, delivery, shipping, or sales tax. Not valid with any other coupon promotion and not redeemable for cash.

Happy searching!!
17. For increase security, for valet and car service reasons plus more, can a security touch pad pin code be implemented into the startup. Maybe a button called valet security enable/disable and this will enable/disable a 4-6 digit pin code to be entered to use the unit. Hopefully keep out the ones that you do not want to see your address book or any other important information stored in the unit.

more of an i.e. just like the pin code entry for MS HP/compaqs PPC!
