I have used the D2 and now have the Z1....the Z1 is better at mapping the destinations....faster at computations. The extra money was worthi it to me...and ...it talks to you...tells you the roads...so you do not have t keep looking at the display. The software in the Z1 is amost identical to the units used in Ford Zephyr, and Lincoln....I had a Zephyr last year, and the nav unit was identical in functionality to the Z1. Except...the buttons were a bit different, abut it did the same thing. The Z1 also has enhanced audio system conrols, and higher quality sound in my opinion.

I contacted Pioneer customer service 3 times regarding an update for the Z1 software. (nav and system) They have given me several different answers. One of the customer service reps said the Z1 has no update, I called back on another day...the rep told me to check back next month. I think they are having problems with the upgrade disk for this unit. They don't have any specifics on it, and won't give me a straight answer.

Has anyone tried the touch screen protection cover for any of the avic units? They sell it on Ebay...it sticks to the screen. I tried one on a D2 unit...and I did not like it. The light reflected from it and caused difficulty in seeing the display somtimes. thanks Mike

I have purchased 2 pioneer units. An avic D-2, and a Z1. The D-2 is in my friends car, and the Z1 is in my Mariner. Both units work excellent. The D2 performs very rapidy with navigation calculations, and plays music with excellent quality. The Z1 performs excellent too, I love the library system for storing music CD's...and it has a multitude of adjustments and enhancements such as a rear cam, Blutooth, and I also have the XM unit installed. I purchased the D2 and Z1 in January, I installed them both, and they are great. I also had a Lincoln Zephyr with the factory Navigation unit.

IT might be possible to make an image of the Z2 HD...then re-image a HD from a Z1. that way the HD from the Z1 would be identical to the Z2. All boot strap material should be the same, or improved for faster booting.

Does anyone know if the upgrade for the Avic Z1 is out yet? My map database is becoming outdated, and Pioneer said there would be an update coming out this sprint. Well...Spring is here...and I still don't see any update from Pioneer. Any info would be appreciated. thanks; MikeM

I purchased a refurb Z1 in February 2007, it worked perfectly out of the box. I also purchased an Avic D2 unit, and installed in friends car, it was also refurbised, worked fine. Does anyone know if there is an update for the Avic Z1 navigation data base? I heard somthing about a software update was available thru a third party download site? Any info would be appreciated. thanks Mike
