  1. Why can't you play music and navigate with one phone? When I use Carplsy, I use both Maps and Music at the same time. Not sure why you need a second phone.

I don't need it, but my girlfriend has her music and her playlists that she likes to listen to and she can change tracks on her phone without disturbing my maps.

  2. The big upgrade for Pioneers this year is full Maestro support, it's a very cool system and more and more vehicles are being added to support it via iData.   I played with the JBL unit quite a bit at CES, and it is nice. It is aimed at the entry consumer market with a basic audio feature set (as shown at the show at least).  Dual pre-outs, no SXM or HD Radio support.  It is a nice clean GUI and fast for what it is.  One feature dual phone families with like is it allows you to hot swap between Carplay and Android Auto - no need to toggle it in a menu.  Pioneer has better support for that this year, but still requires a manual change, so better but not perfect :)

The JBL is as small a screen as you can go and still use AA as it's been explained to me.  6.5" is the cutoff, that is why you don't see it on more 6" models from Pioneer, Kenwood etc - those are usually 6.1 or 6.2" sizes.

The Pioneers are still a way more advanced unit audio wise, interface wise etc.  And Kenwood is looking much much better this year too with their new GUI and screens.

Loosing mirror link is not a big deal in my market, support by phones was very poor and generally was more of a pain than a feature.. More the phone makers problem than Pioneer or anyone else IMO.

It's great to see more brands getting into the Carplay and interface market as that helps drive innovation and new features etc.

As for the capacitive touch screen - it's by far the coolest looking screen type IMO, but doesn't work with gloves well... I was very happy with the Pioneer Cap/Res screens we saw on the 4100-7100 last year and as far as I know they are the same this year for the NEX-X200 models.

Honestly I downloaded the new 9.3 beta on my iPhone and the improvements to carplay leave me pretty happy with my old NEX-4000 radio. I would love to have a capacitive screen so I would have the better version of carplay, but it is nice that I can plug in both my phone and my girlfriend's iPhone at the same time and use my phone to navigate while her phone plays music. Pioneer keeps providing bug fixes and the radio definitely performs better than the day I got it. I don't know, I really like the JBL, but I don't know if I like it enough to go through the work of swapping radios.

  3. I use Spotify and Pandora and on occasion have same issue as you. Don't think its the adds though since I pay for Spotify. Trying to play from the HU and nothing, unlock the phone and hit play/pause then try again and it works. It's pretty buggy but when it's working it's great. Haven't had any issues with phone/messages/calendars. Maps works pretty good but not night mode for me at least.

Apple needs to really beef up their 3rd party support for CarPlay. Only audio apps and they barely work probably because the SDK for it is shit. I don't even use any 3rd party apps for that very reason. First party apps on CarPlay are great though. Much better than anything else I've ever used anyways.

  4. the additional idatalink features are actually huge for those of us that have the ability to use them, I was running a Kenwood dnx890hd in my 2011 Mustang with the Maestro rr module, and their MUS1 dash panel with integrated climate controls and OBDII data which was amazing, I just didnt like the Kenwood, so I stepped up to the 8100nex, but I lost the climate controls and OBDII data, which now the 8200 has, Im kinda pissed now! but I couldnt be happier with the 8100nex over the Kenwood, I just dont get all the bitching some members do, the Pioneer is far and away better than any Kenwood offerings imo

I watched the CES demos of the original nex units. The 4000-8000. They were supposed to have these features from the start. Hell. The demos were nearly identical. This is not guaranteed until they launch and honestly there are better radios from Kenwood for that money that are where people's money should go if they want those features. Me? I don't give a damn about that. My car doesn't have that. I'm buying the JBL radio. 400 bucks for capacitive is nice for me.

  5. Major update would be wireless & support for other navigation apps like Waze.  As dvboy mentioned it would be great to find out these existing ones could do wireless.

I'm only interested if it goes wireless, hoping the hardware on the current units are capable of it.

Sorry guys that's not possible. None of the Pioneer units have built in Wifi. The Alpine ILX-007 had a dormant Wifi Chip on the launch units, but later machines didn't. Bluetooth doesn't have the bandwidth and I doubt Pioneer will support using a USB Wifi stick with the units.

Possibly the new units coming out of CES could have dormant wifi with carplay in mind, but that's unlikely as well.

  6. New features include finally incorporating the "For You" and "What's new" sections of Apple music right in carplay, vast improvements to radio station discovery, and more. The music app has been revamped top to bottom.

The Maps app also gains the new features of iOS 9, so you can browse for locations based on type, and it gives star ratings to the locations based on yelp reviews. Very nice IMO. Finally showing off what carplay can really do. Buy a radio once and get updates for life constantly making the radio better through your iPhone.

  7. No Mirrorlink and Most of the units are resistive as opposed to the the capacitive screens from the previous year.

There was no change to which units used what. The 8x00 has always been the only capacitive unit. There is also the Appradio 4 which will never get android auto because google requires a larger screen for it supposedly. If they made a new generation appradio with a 7 inch screen again it would probably get android auto. Regardless I've seen all the new radios from CES and my money is going to JBL. They made a real winner.

  8. Maybe hardware that supports BT CarPlay & Android Auto?

Honestly if the headunits could do that they would put that front and center. A feature that great would be a huge deal. No one else has done it yet. I was expecting to see someone announce it at CES but neither the OEMs or the aftermarket makers have announced anything.

  9. So my CarPlay keeps dying at random. Thought it was a cable issue but nope, changing that fixes nothing. Only way to bring it back is to reboot the radio. Luckily since the 4000 screen comes off it is a quick reboot for me.

It happened with my old iPhone 5s and now it's happening with my 6s+. I'm on the latest software all around, and when it happens it's a toss up of if Bluetooth will kick in to be a backup. The machine still recognizes that something is plugged into USB, so it won't let Bluetooth stay on for music sometimes, but the iPod menu dies for both ports and CarPlay won't relaunch even if I unplug and plug the phone back in. Blah

  10. Probably. But, the non 8100x units only have single core CPUs. This is likely the reason you don't have scroll effects, since the unit can't keep up well.

Remember that all on screen animations for CarPlay is handled on the phone. That's why you can take screenshots on your phone and you get CarPlay screen shots. The head unit is just transmitting touch responses to the phone.

CarPlay and Appradio mode are not that dissimilar.

  11. Found some interesting stuff digging through the 1.10 backup image from my 8000nex.

Looks like carplay is called "DIO" internally. Smoking gun are dio_demo.jpg files that are screenshots or ads for carplay. Additionally the functionality of the classes referencing DIO look like they are working with carplay.

There are a handful of classes so far relating to DIO. The jp.pioneer.ceam.mode.modescreen.DIO.SCR_DIO_Base class, which is found in the mode.apk,  has most of the basic functionality in it. This includes the display of the caution screen. First thing I am going to try is disabling the caution screen by editing the smali for this class.

There are more references to DIO in other classes, mostly classes that manage the state of the UI/audio services.

There are also many references to AAM. The base class for AAM in mode.apk looks MUCH more complicated than the carplay classes. I think this is appradio, but am not sure. I will take a look at the 8100nex image and compare to see if AAM is possibly android auto.

Attached the carplay DIO image file below.

    AV.apk -> /res/drawable-mdpi/dio_nex_demo_image.jpg

That's great. So question to those working on this. Do you think it is possible to change what version of the carplay interface is displayed by the iPhone? All the Pioneer units with resistive displays (4000-7100) have a different interface to those units with capacitive displays (8000/8100, appradio 4) and those units get smooth inertial scrolling through menus, and the ability to pan the map around with your finger.

Carplay doesn't use pinch to zoom, and the single finger touch response of the Pioneer units is actually pretty good. Does it look like it would be possible to force the iPhone to use the more powerful interface?
