  1. Update 2: For those that hate reading, here is a video of the setup explaining what it does when and how it works. Enjoy.

    quicky recap.

    I have an appradio 2

I am running this off of a 3rd Generation iPod touch.

This setup should be compatible with any device that is AppRadio capable, including the original appradio.

If you have an Android phone you can use this setup to increase your apps with appradio. An old iPod touch goes for pennies on ebay.

  2. Update: I have tested further. The original setup for my 5 remains intact. While in this setup appradio apps cannot function from my 5, a quick look at the appradio site will show you that the list of compatible apps is quite a bit smaller for iPhone 5 than 4/4s or in this case iPod. However because now whenever I connect my phone the AppRadio thinks it's connected to an android device, using my fake parking brake, I still can achieve full mirroring of my display without touch control. So as such whenever I feel like listening to music from an unsupported app like Rdio or using google maps I still can. And since I now have my iPod app back I can use mix mode to listen to music from the iPod and control it while using maps from the Google maps powered iPhone 5. I'm loving this setup more and more.

  3. So I have an old 3rd gen iPod touch. I jailbroke it today. Installed activator and resupported to enable video out over component. I set my appradio to use the 30 pin connectors again and I tethered it to my phone. Here are my findings.

If you tell activator to lock the ipod and turn on airplane mode when the power cuts out it can stay on for over a week without power.

Tell activator to open the appradio app and unlock the device when power is connected and you instantly bypass all but the first warning screen.

sadly activator cannot tell the ipod to connect to my phone via bluetooth for tethering. That would limit the drain on my phone and would have made it so the system would require zero input from me to function. For now with my iPhone I need to have the settings open to tethering so the iPod connects via wifi.

All apps that work on iOS 5 that are appradio compatible work flawlessly on the unit that ive tested so far.

iOS 5 is far more friendly to the AppRadio GPS. Waze and other GPS apps get an instant exact location.

Because it is running iOS 5 AppRadio extensions non beta is useless because it isn't compatible with the new appradio app, and the betas require iOS 6 or greater.

The interface is FAARR Smoother than my iPhone 5 because of the direct control via 30 pin instead of bluetooth control.

I currently have no way of activating Pandora and hide the iPod completely from view.

I overall love the setup. If anyone wants a video I did record a few of the setup in action.

Edit: to any iPhone 3GS users. If you want to use appradio, downloading resupported will do the trick.

  4. The affair with cars and iPhones is very simple. At most there are currently two standards to build to with iPhones. 30 pin and lightning. VS with Android each manufacturer built in a different system for each phone, and Google didn't even support audio over USB natively till I believe last year. To support android all the car manufacturers have put stereo bluetooth in their cars but as far as a connectivity system, iOS had this on lock for good reason for quite some time.

  5. I am considering one of these 2 units. I am really after simple true voice control for phone calls, music, etc. (I would be using an iPhone 5 and/or iPod. )

I tried looking at the Pioneer manuals, and I am hunting for a store that has these units set up to demo, but I'll ask these questions:

    For Appradio 3 and x8500bhs:

While listening to music, can you just press and hold the home button and say "call Bob" and be calling Bob hands-free instantly?

While listening to music, can you just press and hold the home button and say "play playlist Rock" and instantly switch to that playlist?

Has anyone used Appradio 3 with Google maps for navigation on an iPhone? Can you manipulate Google maps in the usual fashion on the Appradio touchscreen?

    Thanks

With the Appradio 3 Siri and google voice/google now commands can be done via the heady it by pressing and holding the home button. This includes commands requesting music.

I have an Appradio 2 that I use with google maps. You need a bypass to display on screen, and non jail broken you cannot control the map from the head unit. However once you enter your destination and turn the phone sideways, the map displays full screen and looks absolutely gorgeous. All voice prompts go through the lightning port without a problem. If you want to control google maps you will need to jailbreak your phone and install Appradio extensions.

  6. They probably are nearly the same hardware underneath as far as their back-end horsepower. However, that doesn't actually matter for the appradio experience. 100% of that is done from the phone. Your radio only shows the video feed and sends the touch inputs to the phone. Both will perform identically based on whatever hardware you're using for the appradio experience.

  7. We have to remember that in this forum we are living in a bubble. The majority of us are buying pure appradio products. We either have the AppRadio 1,2 or 3. However currently Pioneer has dozens of appradio compatible products, and recently launched a whole slew of updates to any radio that could handle it to upgrade its firmware to support the iPhone 5. They aren't even done with that yet, because the update broke pandora for many of these radios. Pioneer has promised on their facebook page to make repairing that issue a top priority. I guarantee you that we will not see any update to appradio 2 before this fix is implemented on these radios.

My hope is that after the pandora issue is resolved, they will give the appradio 2 an update to enable the parrot bluetooth hardware to use its stereo bluetooth capability and to give us siri eyes free. Hopefully anyways.

  8. The question is do you want the extra features and expandability of the X8500 or are you most interested in the appradio experience?

The X8500 and the appradio 3 (assuming you're getting the 210) both have DVD players, both have stereo bluetooth, both have touch screens, although the X8500 might not be capacitive. I did a google search and didn't find an answer. Both are fully appradio compatible with all compatible phones, also neither come with any cables, both are going to act the same in appradio apps, but the appradio 3 is 150 dollars cheaper.

Now, the X8500 does have an SD card reader, two USB ports, so you can plug in more than one device in at once and you can plug in USB sticks full of movies and music, it has HD radio, is satellite radio ready with an adaptor, it has one more preout, so if you're using external amps, you can control 4 separate channels and a separate sub, it supports auto equalization based on your vehicle(no clue how well that works), it comes with a remote control, and finally for theft protection the display is removable. <-- that's a lot of extra features for 150 extra bucks.

If those above extra features mean nothing to you save some money and get the appradio 3. Hell if you really want to save money, buy the 110 and ditch the disk drive. Who uses disks anyways? Diskless the difference of price is now 250 dollars. However, if you find the above features to be an awesome addition, and worth a 150-250 dollar price premium the X8500 is your radio.

  9. If the APIs are in the new SDK to support an Apple approved car mode then yes we will have apps in our car the apple way. If this is the case pioneer and the rest of them better pray that apple is kind and allows them to upgrade their headunits, because appradio and all of its competitors that use iPhones died today. Good luck getting a single new app when there is a first party way to do it that is far more robust in its offering and install base.

  10. Pioneer has a chance. They do currently support Siri Eyes free on the AppRadio 3. I believe Apple recognizes that people don't buy new cars just to use new iPhone features (except those with more money than sense) and with that I know they will work with the aftermarket.

As far as apps it remains to be seen if apple supports any third party apps at all with this car feature. Currently it looks very iOS 1with only apple supported features built in. Just like Siri before it. Mind you the interface is gorgeous so I wouldn't care if that was how it ended up.
