  1. HDD units are quite a bit faster then the DVD nav units and that's just with the standard 4200 rpm drives, also with DVD based nav units you can't use the DVD slot while navigating(except a few models that I think have 2 slots for this reason...) Plus as stated you can upgrade the hdd in the Z2 to another Toshiba brand (other brands do not seem to work well and reset constantly, have a look at the HDD thread in the mods section for more info.) So along with the 5400 speed increase you can also increase the music partition to 20GB which will now fit the whole 400 Artists or Albums limit and dou
  2. The 7200rpm is much faster. Everything responds instantly. I've been trying to get the Z2 to do EVERYTHING at once, rip a CD, listen to library, set a route for every drive, and bluetooth phone trying to get the HDD to seek as much as possible (seek is the biggest power drain). Yesterday I tested my Seagate ST9100823A 5400rpm drive. Remember the stock drive is rated at 2.3W seek, same as the spec on the Seagate. It took over an hour of testing before it rebooted on the drive to work this morning. I just finished prepping the Toshiba MK4025GAS 4200rpm drive, which is rated at a whopping
  3. So, I got a Z1 image last week. Turns out a buddy of mine had the Z1, bought the Upgrade DVD and wanted me to help him upgrade the sucker. Talk about perfect timing. Paid the $40 to unlock his drive and now I have a well used Z1 image for testing. First thing I did was do a copy to my 7200rpm Seagate drive and pop it in my Z2. After the firmware upgrade, err, downgrade, it booted up fine and the testing began. Ripped a CD while driving around and using the Nav (Z1 maps suck BTW haha) and lo and behold the thing rebooted. On the drive home it locked up once (had to stop the car, shut it dow
  4. Look like we should start the search for this hdd. Go Ebay Why would I want to buy a drive that's exactly the same as the original.... IMO the point of replacing the drive is to get something faster and/or with more storage. For the price of what that drive costs you can just pay $5 and wipe your HDD clean and install the Z2 image.
  5. You can upgrade the stock drive for $5 if you don't care about the data on the drive, it's a simple procedure, but there is always a risk when removing hardware is involved, but for the savvy it is not expensive, and I have started a thread for teating different hdd's in hope that in the end we can increase boot speed! This has been asked in this forum over and over, and now we can find a way, and the more people who help the better our results, so if you can't spare a new drive, or a used drive, or $5 and some common sense, then stay away from this and enjoy the system the way it is, some of
  6. I did the exact same thing, I didn't want to pay the $43 US or whatever, so I forked over the $5 and loaded up the Z2 image, so unless you really have a lot of cd's or some data worth saving, the $5 unlocker with the Z2 image is perfect for an upgrade, but now I want to increase the boot speed, honestly the extra space for music would be nice, but I would LOVE to have a perm increase in speed like I saw in the 5400 but stable like original, and if possible maybe a 7200? Who knows lets find out.
  7. I have started a new thread here: http://www.avic411.com/forum/viewtopic. ... 3447#63447 That is specifically for the HDD testing and results, this thread should not be hijacked from the topic, and seeing as the images are all posted we should start a new thread to make finding HDD replacement info easier. I have shared my results and hope everyone will follow suit so we can collect as much data as possible.
  8. I think it's time to start a new thread for this topic, as the ISO begging thread was for ISO begging and the Image is now available to all. I think we should move our discussion here so we can all experiment with different drives types and speeds and find out what the best replacement, and the fastest replacement drives are that will work in our Nav systems without it rebooted periosically. I tested the stock HDD and of course it doesn't reboot at all, but I also tried an 80GB 5400 Hitchachi HTS548080M9AT00, and it reboots about every 15 - 30 mins. Lets share our results edit:
  9. I have installed it on my original drive, after upgrading to a hitachi 80 gb I too was getting random reboots, so I decided to unlock my stock drive and reload this image onto it, works great, but it is much slower then the hitachi I was testing with which is a 5400 rpm drive, now I am thinking I'd like to try a 7200 rpm hdd. Maybe the reboots are something to do with the overall drive capacity, has anyone drive to cut the drive size of 60gb or 80gb drives down to just 40gb or 30gb and see if the reboots stop? I forgot to disable the password and locked my hitachi drive and the hddunlock progra
  10. I have started the upload to usenet on alt.binaries.avic.fileshare and alt.binaries.test, it will take me 30 hours to complete the upload on my 100kb/s connection, but the files should start to be available immediately. SO torrent, Usenet, or FTP pick your favorite method. Again thanks for the image.
  11. I imaged it onto an 80 GB Hitachi I had lying around, and it works fine, I just loaded the 30 GB image and left the rest blank just to test it out, when it first booted up.... it says it's updating the system and had 2 parts. Then it rebooted and everything was factory again and it was a z2, THANKS A BUNCH I went for a drive and the maps are updated, the change boot logo option is there, the menus are updated, it's all good. Only took me about 35 mins to load the image across my network. I am currently raring the image into 50MB parts, and then I will make 20% pars and create a nzb. I h
  12. Torrents suck, they are slow, and it depends on someone to always to seed it. Newsgroups are ALWAYS fast and doesn't take anyone's bandwidth once it's uploaded, and they are made for transferring large files like HD movies etc. Plus only I have to upload it and once I am done everyone can download at full speed and have the files within hours, WAY quicker then any torrents that will take days to transfer the files until enough people have downloaded it. Anyways I have created a group alt.binaries.avic.fileshare with my NG provider Usenetserver.com I will upload the files that AFMagnum will sen
  13. Well I'm glad someone else knows about the world of NNTP, it defintely would be the best way IMO cause it wouldn't eat up anyone's BW to serve it... and I would be MORE then willing to donate my upload BW if I could get the image. As for the support on the forums, your always gonna get dumb requests for help... maybe create a STICKY and put all the relevant info in it, ie (alt.binaries.avic.files or whatever, the links to NNTP trials apps, and links to newsgroup providers with cheap trial accounts (some lucky people will even have FREE NG access through thier ISP, mine took it away ) a
  14. I would be interested in this image as well, I would pay for shipping of DVD's if necessary, but would it be possible for someone to say upload it to Newsgroups? they post full HD movies there that are 30 gb+ that I haev downloaded before and the speeds are very fast if you pay for a service, for those that don't haev accounts the service I use sells a 3 days for $3 trial.... anyone could just download a trial newsgroup app and buy a $3 and download at VERY fast speeds and everyone could have access to it.. just a thought, please don't flame me. TIA
  15. I went in and relocated my GPS antennae, it seems that it may have got pinched in some plastic, cause since I have moved it, it initialized in like 3 mins and starting clocking my location and speed etc, thanks for the tips it was the antennae. Thanks for the help
