Avic-z1 power problem

Recommended Posts

I bought a Avic-z1 off craigslist this past Sunday but the only problem is that I can't seem to turn the unit on. I hear the fan kick on but none of the buttons illuminate and the screen doesn't turn on either, like if it wasn't getting any power. The guy I bought it from told me that he bought it back in 2006 and had the unit removed from his SUV in 2008 before he traded the SUV and was working when removed. He also said that it had been just sitting in a shelf in his garage ever since. I only payed $50 bucks for the Avic-z1 which the guy also threw in the blue tooth, ipod adapter, and a pioneer 6 disc CD changer, so I rather not make a big deal about it since it was a pretty good deal. There's a few electronic repair shops here in the Dallas area but would rather get some input or opinions from people that are familiar with the unit, than to get screwed paying $$$ for an easy fix.

Any comments or suggestion are appreciated

thanks for your time 8)

Check the inline fuses, confirm that you have 12V Postive to the red and yellow wires, and 12V negative to the black wire.

Are you trying to bench test, or is it installed in your vehicle? If bench testing, you probably do not have enough amps (current) to power the unit on.

I tested it on my cars battery while the car was on but the only thing that comes on is the cooling fan. The harness didn't have a in line fuse. I looked over some of the other topics on the z- series forum and there's a couple of other people that have the same problem but they didn't have an updated answer :(

The guy I bought the unit from told that they didn't want to mess with the headliner so they left the GPS antenna in the SUV and the microphone too. Would not having the antenna keep it from turning on? None of the buttons light up either.

thanks for looking out though

The antennas will not keep it from booting up. AS long as you have good power and ground on the yellow, red, black, then it should boot up...

I checked my wiring and it was good. Also since your in the DWF,TX area would you know how to repair the unit or can you recommend someone that can get it working? Also when I bought the z1, the guy told me that I'm gonna need the maps updated, since there from 2006. Would this have anything to do with the unit not working?

Sorry if my questions are dumb but I never owned a Avic Z1, so this is all new to me :?

I called the guy I bought the z1 from and asked him if he ever had a problem with the z1 and he said no and then I asked him about the ding it had on the side and he told me that the shop that removed the z1 out of his suv might have dinged it removing it but that it shouldn't have had any affect to the z1 powrer. I noticed the ding when I bought it but was more concerned that the screen not being cracked and didn't really pay attention to it.

heres a picture of the damage

The cabling between the unit and the screen/front panel may have come loose or broken. If you want to come by, we can take it apart and see what the internal damage looks like. Most parts can be ordered directly from Pioneer. I would also be interested in purchasing it from you if you want your money back out of it.

When i tested mine i hade the same problem...

Make sure:

Yellow + Red (+12V)

Black (-12V)

Also when i didnt give the unit enough power the fan pulsated ever so slightly.. listen to it carefully is it turning on and off? When i gave it more juice it worked... also when it is plugged in and the fan comes on do the LEDs Blink? If so u need more power... if you give it too much power the fuse will pop so u dont have to worry about smoking ur unit!

This is how i got mine to work when i bench tested it.
