problem with ipod nano

first time poster and new owner of used d-3. i searched for a couple hours, but i havnt been able to find a solution as of yet. i purchased a i pod cord and installed it as per instructed, but when i hook up my wifes 3rd gen ipod nano, i cannot control it from the d3. i get a black screen with basic controls that do nothing. one of the buttons says music, but doesnt do anything, im guessing the unit sees the ipod as a video source. i also tried my first gen ipod touch, same problem. it wont play video from the touch either. if this unit wont control the ipod from the screen its a waste of 400$. i could just keep the stock scion pioneer unit and the garmin in the car. and while its not as important, whats up with the black screen? i would of thought there would at least be some pre fabed wallpaper they would throw up to make it look nice at least. i changed the three appearance options to green 1,2 and 3. my thanks in advance to anyone who has any insight as to the problem here.
