It's not tapped right, is what's wrong. I used a T-tap myself on mine and had the same problem. You need to splice the wire in and solder or crimp it. I cut mine, used a butte connector, and crimped, and now it works fine.

 

T-taps (vampire taps, etc) don't really work that great for all but the most basic signals - the reverse wire, for example. The VSS sends a constant signal and is very voltage-sensitive so you really want a solid connection there. I mean, it can be done, it has been done, but look where you're at :)
