ducatiboy
A quick search came up with this post (and many others where this has been answered):http://www.avic411.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2140 http://www.avic411.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=728 It's a great write up on the hard drive. Go to that link and read (and follow): Q: How can I unlock my drive? The way you connect this drive to your comptuer is one of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6812203012 This is the missing link from the section in his post labeled: Q:Can I connect my Z1 drive to my PC? Then follow the instructions in: Q: How do I disable the lock on my HDD. Then before putting the drive back into the Z1, replace the OPENING.BMP file on the LDATA drive with whatever BMP you would like to (500x240 resolution).
Guest
Didn't someone recently post up something about some kind of usb cable offered by Pioneer? I could have swore I saw it on the boards yesterday, but after about 30 minutes of seaching, I can't find it. Anyways, I was just wondering if that could be used for transferring images and/or music. Guest
This is what I'm talking about.... http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pna/v ... 21,00.html Can't you use this to plug a usb flash drive into the Z1 to upload music/pictures?
cntrylvr79
It's doubtful. That interface is meant to allow control of a usb drive by a new pioneer radio. don't see anywhere in the manual it saying that information can be uploaded from the drive to a pioneer unit. Guest
So you can put songs on a usb flast drive, plug it into this device and be able to play those songs on the z1?
ducatiboy
I think so, but the chances this will work with the Z1 will be slim. It might work with the Z2 though. I would guess this is for the D3.
cntrylvr79
It's technically for the new model line. Which means it'll probably show up as an external source on older pioneers. We all know how bad the interface is for external sources....
mikek
Looks like that USB thing will work on Z1 (according to the owners manual) Click on the link above and go to owners manual and it mentions the Z1 in head unit group 4.
cntrylvr79
Yes it can and group 4 is pioneer's way of saying the interface is going to suck ALOT. Ask anyone with a d1/2 with an ipod interface how bad that is. The usb thing on the z1 is going to show up the same way.

It was that way on the D1/D2 as well as the N1 and possibly the N2/N3 with the ipod adapter.
Guest
Ducatiboy, you aluded to this above, but just to confirm, there is no way to put background pics on the hard drive without unlocking the HDD, right? Thanks.
ducatiboy
Ducatiboy, you aluded to this above, but just to confirm, there is no way to put background pics on the hard drive without unlocking the HDD, right? Thanks. Yes, right now that's the only way we know how to do it. If someone else knows how to do this without unlocking the hard drive, they have not shared it with the masses. It's not a big deal. It's not free, but once you do it you can pull the drive in and out of the car and do whatever you want.
Guest
Does removing the hard drive, unlocking it and adding/modifing files on it void the warrenty?
ducatiboy
Does removing the hard drive, unlocking it and adding/modifing files on it void the warrenty? This was discussed before: http://avic411.com/forum/viewtopic.php? ... t=warranty I can't say it would or would not. I would guess you would have to read all the small fine print from Pioneer. I would also think that I can remove my hard drive and put it back in (cleaning off the finger prints) and no one would be able to tell. You have to unlock your hard drive in a PC, it costs $50. If worse came to worse, if I had to send my Z1 in for service.... I would replace the backup image with the original... re-enable locking. Relock the drive and lose my $50. Could they tell? Maybe, but I would guess not. If they got your unit back and powered it up and saw a different boot image, I would bet they might think twice about honoring your warranty. But this has never been tested. With the costs associated with changing the boot image, there hasn't been more than a couple dozen people to do this with a Z1 (from my understanding).
