8000nex Max Volume for OHms

Recommended Posts

Was wondering if anyone has tested out their 8000 for max volume support while tuning with an amp? Rule of thumb is basically 3/4 volume which is around the 26th notch on the head unit. Has anyone gone beyond this and tuned up with amp?

Thanks

Not sure what you are asking here.

In truth, setting up at 3/4 volume level is nothing more than myth... but it does have some truth to it... that's mostly how all myths start. :)

The idea behind it is that most volume controls are set up with 'overhead'... because not all audio sources are normalized to 0dBFS (FS=full scale). For example, if a source has peaks at (normalized to) -4.5dBFS, you can change the volume +4.5db to compensate.  However, you also amplify any noise or distortion in the source and introduced into the reproduction signal up to that stage of amplification.  If the signal exceeds 0dBFS at that point and after, you continue to cascade noise and distortion.  The idea of tuning your system at 3/4 volume is to minimize the cascading of this effect.

The 8000 line-level output is spec'd at 4V max.  I have no idea where that is in relation to source 0dbFS. I have never seen any HU manufacturer spec' the output 0dBFS level.  Just the output being rated 4V max says line level does not follow any audio standards that I'm familiar with (-10dBV for consumer, +4dBu for professional).

If you have access to an oscilloscope, you could run a simple audio signal (say a1 kHz sine wave) though the unit at source 0dBFS and monitor the line output for distortion as you increase the volume setting... then back it off 3dB.  That should put you in the 'zone'.

Short of doing that, it truly is a crap shoot... but 3/4 volume is weighing the dice. :)
