I have the Toshiba 40 gig and mine starts up in half the time than the stock drive used to.

My maps look better to me, but that could be because I came from the Z1 maps and half the roads around here weren't even on there... :)

Well now... Be VERY careful if you order a drive and the 2.5" drive adapter from Newegg. The drive adapter is made WRONG. Or at least the one they sent me was! The 2.5" connector on it is flipped around backwards. I just blew up my new 80Gig Toshiba. I will say their shipping is really fast, I had the drive and adapter in 2 days. Unfortunately, now both are useless. The drive adapter has an etch blown off it, and the drive is completely non-responsive both in my USB 2.5" drive enclosure and with a "Good" drive adapter. (I'm using it right now to format a Hitachi 30Gig drive, so I know it works) They better send me a new one... For $58 I'm sure they will, but still. What a pain. Argh.. Was looking forward to having the Z3 image working today. Hopefully I can try it out for 10 minutes before it crashes on the Hitachi. LOL

Good news, they're going to swap me a hard drive. They're going to refund the price of the adapter, I don't want another bad one anyway. You think they'd want it back to verify that it's bad, and possibly check their inventory to make sure others don't get bad ones, but... Apparently they don't do tech support or anything. Either way I get a new drive, but I have to send this one back first, so it'll take a while. I suppose I could desolder and flip the connector around, or since it's really only the "key" hole in the 2.5" socket that's wrong (looks like it's cast into the plastic, but the pin is there under it) I may be able to just dig that key hole out and repair the blown etch.. Is it worth it since I already have one? I dunno... Fun! The 30G is done formatting, I'm going to try and unlock it now and burn it with the Z3 stuff. Yay. Don't know why I bothered formatting it as it's going to be repartitioned anyway... ah well.

There's only one "image", and if any part of it was corrupt, you'd get that message before you could do anything. So... no idea what you did.

How did you open the image? Did you use Acronis? If so, what restore option did you use? It seems easy enough, but if you choose the wrong options, you could have opened it as a writable image and then you could corrupt it. I would run a file recheck with your torrent downloader and make sure it recognizes all the files.

So either I did something wrong or I didn't need to download all 14 parts of the Z3 image...I had upgraded to the Z2 a week ago...and never put music on the new drive bc I figured I'd lose it anyway when upgrading to the Z3..now the instructions on the first page just show to move the 1 file over to the drive...so am I correct in saying that I now have a Z3 or am I only partial Z2/Z3? What am I missing...What features are not there that I could benefit from just reloading all 14 of the .tib files to the drive? also is there a write up of how do to that...or do I just load all 14 .tib files onto the new drive?

I think you have a general misconception about how Acronis works. Read the instructions again and check out acronis website for how hard drive imaging works. There is no way to "move the 1 file over".

Quite possible but I followed the "how to" exactly and the only file I selected was the virgin1.tib there are 13 others...that I did not touch...the Z1 updated and everything works perfect but just wondering if I could've saved myself some time and/or is there any benefit to moving the other 13 .tib files to the HDD..

When you "open" any of the .tib files, they automatically associate with each other to form the completed image. So, unless you specifically deselected a particular partition from the image, you did it right and it loaded the whole ~10gb image. Again, no way to load just one file, since the collection of 14 files contains the completed image.

When you pointed Acronis to that first file, it took the rest. Even though you didn't physically select the other 13 files, they're there...if they weren't, your HDD wouldn't function.

Is this image able to be placed on a the stock z2 drive that has been unlocked with a program that erased the data on it?

yes

I read through the walkthrough that garrettoomey posted early in this thread on how to install the z3 image without hurting your existing files. If I am going to be applying this to my drive that has been wiped what do I need to do differently from the walkthrough? I am ready to do this now I just need to know a few details about using the true image program with my particular application. One thing that I do not understand is that the walkthrought says that the one partition where the maps and POI is is like 17GB and this file that I downloaded is under 10gb.... Are the files that I downloaded compressed and does the true image software un-compresses them when it puts them on the drive?

If someone who has done this could walk me through it over the phone I would be MOST thankfull.

Posted May 29, 2008 · 18:05 UTC#293

^^ Image is compressed. Not that tough, open in acronis, tell it to write to the AVIC drive, it'll ask if you want to delete the old partitions, you select yes. Baddabing.

Posted May 29, 2008 · 19:33 UTC#294

^^^ Ok so doing this mod is much easier if you do not care about the existing data on your drive.

Posted May 29, 2008 · 19:38 UTC#295

^^^^Correct!

Posted May 29, 2008 · 21:47 UTC#296

That IS correct. Just do what I'm going to do, buy another drive and put it on THAT one. That way if you DO care about your data, and you fubar the image process, you always have the old one to fall back on until you get the new one running.

Posted May 29, 2008 · 23:02 UTC#297

LOL I fubar'd the process of installing the image on a blank drive.. For some reason it won't allow me to do the last partition worth of data. I have plenty of space, don't know what I did wrong.. Still waiting on the Newegg 80G hard drive...

Posted May 30, 2008 · 01:46 UTC#298

I am not sure how to "tell it to write to the avic drive" I took the drive out of the car tonight paid my $5 to unlock the drive which said that it would destroy all data. I then disabled the lock on the drive following the instructions. I then opened True Image and went to the mount image function and pointed it to the virgin1.TIB file. It never asked me if I wanted to delete the old partitions and when it was done I went and put it back in the unit and it told me in 3 different languages that it was not a usable HDD.

What did I do wrong?

I know that I am close I am just missing something here....

Posted May 30, 2008 · 03:14 UTC#299

^^^ Ok before anyone rushes to respond I got it. Although I am still disappointed that it does not have my home address on the new maps.... My home was built in 06' I figured it would be here....

one more question... are there any more updates that I can apply to make my unit the latest and greatest?
