one more question... are there any more updates that I can apply to make my unit the latest and greatest?

Gracenotes update: http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/ ... ase+Update

I read through what it said on the pioneer site and it seems like this is a pretty worthless update... how can it help me?

BTW..... I just wanted to let everyone know that my total cost to upgrade my stock drive was only $5 + the cost of the drive adapter.

You only need the Gracenotes update if you are adding new store bought cds.

Just started seeding the torrent, noticed a lot of peers but only 1 seed. I'm also talking to Hyperite about possibly setting up a http mirror.

Hello,

I was reading thru the forum and noticed that there is not need for drive unlocking if the drive is new. Reading this forum is states to disable security with MHDD. http://avic411.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=728, Then you need to unlock the drive.

But in this posting it says you don't need to if the drive is new.

What I did thus far is you the MHDD tool and disabled the security feature, then I used Acronis true image to place the Z3 image on the drive. Is there anything else i need to do before place back into my vehicle?

Can some pls clarify this for me?

Thanks, G

Is your new drive a Toshiba brand drive? Which image did you download?

Get a Toshiba drive. It is the only brand drive that will work in the AVIC and NOT reboot.

Thanks, Why is that other drives are not working or rebooting when most of the specs are the same.

Did anyone get to the root cause of why they reboot on certain drives?

Which are the recommended drives?

Thanks, G

Has anyone done a z2 to z3 upgrade using a laptop with Vista and been successful? How???

Posted Jul 01, 2008 · 20:28 UTC#313

You can not use a laptop to turn security off. If you have a drive that is unlocked, AND security has been disabled, then you can use a Vista laptop with USB to 2.5" drive adapter. You will just use Acronis like normal.

Worst case though, I could pay $5 and wipe the drive again, correct? Are you saying that I can't unlock the drive with the laptop?

Posted Jul 01, 2008 · 21:15 UTC#315

You can unlock the drive with the laptop, but you can not turn security off. Worst case is that you would need to pay $5 to unlock the drive again, but you WILL lose any music and address book entries. The benefit of unlocking the drive and turning security off is that you can save your personal data for the next round of upgrades. The other advantage is that you can install your music, then make a backup image of the fully loaded hard drive...

honestly i thought it through and in the end... my decision was to buy one already loaded from the man (garrettemey).

read how many people were happy and said it was painless and easy..

that was all i needed to read.. just my 2 cents..

Yup.

Posted Jul 09, 2008 · 17:28 UTC#319

Wish i would have known that becuase I almost got a good deal on a z2.

Posted Jul 09, 2008 · 17:39 UTC#320

Z1 is the same too, so if you're going to upgrade to Z3 software anyway, it doesn't matter which one of the Z's you buy (warranty issues aside).

well i just bought a d3 so its too late now.

I did a lot of reading before posting this

I appreciate everyones hard work to making it as easy as possible for everyone.

I almost ordered a preloaded harddrive but i figured i'd save some money.

I downloaded the 14 files.

I received my harddrive toshiba 80gax something

i disabled the security features

i then used acronis to load the image on the drive

i changed the opening backgrounds to some family pics...this was cool.

the only thing i havent figured out on how to do is the resizing of the music section. I read somewhere somebody used acronis director. i downloaded it but i couldn't figure out how to do it... so i installed it in the dash...but i still want to rezise the music section...can anybody point me in the right direction.

1. my bluetooth still drops sometimes it sounds degraded. might be my phone

2. after upgrading.. the z2 still kept all settings like presets volumes memos

the only thing i had to redo is the bluetooth registration..and the time...

JUST A BIG THANKS TO EVERYONE HERE!!!

I finally upgraded my March 2007 Z2 to Z3. I did it myself with an old 80gb drive I had lying around from my now broken laptop. I booted the old laptop from CD and unlocked the drive from the laptop's internal port, then using a usb adapter I had, I plugged that drive into my desktop to finish the image writing.

I performed the two wire bypass but it took me forever to find information about that friggin Lime Green wire for the Parking brake. I wanted to confirm where it was before I cut that wire. After numerous searches and a lot of reading I found that the answer was in my glove box all along -- in the installation manual. So I want to clarify for others that the Lime Green Wire is INDEED located on the Power Harness and you may ground it to the all-black wire that is a few pins away.

Thanks Again!

-Mike
