Previously, like many of you I'm sure,

I could only voice dial by speaking the number I wished to dial.

On a whim I pulled the contacts db out of my F700 using the instructions found in Stephanies post here.

When I looked through I found that while the majority of the numbers were in the format: 1235551212 several were listed as (123) 555-1212.

I changed all of the (123) 555-1212 to the 1235551212 format, saved and uploaded to the avic and voila! Voice dialing by name now works like a charm.

Hopefully this helps someone besides myself.

For the record the original contact list was pulled from a 1st gen iPhone

That's definitely good to know, thanks for sharing. I would hazard a guess that deleting your contacts and reimporting them (after the firmware update) would also solve the problem. It sounds like Pioneer didn't account for how Apple stores contact numbers the first time around, but that they fixed that with the 1.017 firmware.

The first time I imported contacts from the iPhone was after I updated.

Somethings definitely still a little off when transferring from Apple then.

My voice dial by contact name wasn't working either, but I'd already put all my contacts' phone numbers in consistent 10-digit format with no dashes or special characters. Then, while staring at my phone database I realized I had several special characters in the contacts' name fields - such as dashes; "&" signs; etc. I removed all those and now voice dial by contact name is working again! Bottom line is, this is *VERY* sensitive voice recognition software that doesn't like anything at all except regular 'ol letters and numbers - take absolutely all other characters and signs out of both the name and number field and voice dialing by name should work for you.

So if I clean out my address book on the iPhone (or on the computer and then sync to the iPhone), can I make it work? Seems crazy that I have to do the edit in the Pioneer copy to make it work, then I'd just have to do it after the next time I sync to the F. Would like to do it just once ...

Yes, you should be able to do it that way. Several of us are using SQLite to edit the unit's database so we can have the contacts one way in the F unit and differently on our phones. (My phone, for example, requires commas be inserted as pauses in the dial string; whereas the F units require a "P" to be used instead.)

The iphone will not let you create contact phone numbers without automatically adding adding parenthesis around the area code. The phone adds them automatically.

Thanks, ctompkins5. In that case, you'd have to manually edit the database on the F-series and then not re-synch with the iPhone in the future - just add/change contacts using SQLite and replace the database file on the F-series as necessary.

Thanks for posting the solution of removing the (xxx)xxx-xxxx format... I finally have voice dialing working on my iPhone 3G ad could not be happier with the performance of it... now if they could fix all of the other bugs.

I finally got around to editing my phonebook data for my iPhone 3G and now the voice dialing works and names show on the screen when calls come in.

For those that use Firefox they have an SQLite add on that makes it really easy to edit the phonebook.db

Hey guys. I am using the iPhone 3G as well and I just finished editing the phonebook.db file through the FireFox add on. All names and number are exactly as they should be.

I have two more questions about this...

1) In the MySQL database manager for FireFox, there is a column for dwType. The values in this field range from 0 to 3. I am assuming this has to do with the iPhone's organization of "Work" "Mobile" "Home" so on and so forth. Do these number make a difference for the voice dial to work?

2) Do I need to go through my actual phone book on my iPhone and change all of the names to match the names in phonebook.db or are they completely separate and the stereo will find the right name just by the number?

Thanks,

Scott

LOL. Don't worry about responding, just went out to my car on my lunch and I answered both of my questions. The numbers correspond to the Mobile or Home just like I figured, and the phone book on the iPhone does not need to be changed to work.

Awesome find guys. This was the one HUGE disappointment for me as I don't have all my number memorized so I had no idea who was calling in. Not only is my voice dial working, but caller id is now showing names!

Thanks a lot guys!

Just to supplement a little for the column for dwType:

0 = general (only use this if you do not intend to have any other "classifications")

1 = Home

2 = Work

3 = Mobile

Did you go through and remove all the special characters in your contacts names as well? No (, ), ., &, #,+, -, etc.?

what I did as a test was changed only 2 contacts, before I changed them all, if it did not work.

Do you think I have to change every contact for this to work for me?

Posted Jan 09, 2009 · 07:35 UTC#17

I just used sq lite to edit my contacts, all my numbers were already in the xxx xxx xxxx format but they were all set to 0 for dw type. I changed them all to 3 which is the mobile setting (0 is general, 1 is home, 2 is office/work).

After editing the .db file on my computer with sq lite I transferred it to my avic. Now my avic shows "NAME mobile" or "NAME office" as before it only showed "NAME".

I hit the VR button and I couldn't believe that it actually recognized my contact!!! Before it wouldn't recognize any of them, I was shocked when she said " Calling NAME mobile" This works, thanks so much for the tip!

P.S I have a samsung SCH-u740

I can not for the life of me get Voice Dial to work with my iPhone 3G. I have the contacts edited. Before editing, they were in this format on the AVIC F700BT: 1(555)555-5555. Now I have them as 15555555555. Still no luck. Usually just replies "playing all artists" or something like that.

Does someone have some piece of information I'm missing? Kinda beginning to drive me nuts...

Thanks..

If you haven't already, make sure there are no symbols (ie $%&*@#-) in the names of any of your contacts. I edited all of my numbers perfectly but still had "AT&T" in there. Once I changed that, it all worked.

Definitely nothing at all in there. For example, I have a number like this:

John Doe, 15152223333, the ID is "3".

So I say "Call John Doe mobile", and it replies "Showing all artists." It does this for EVERY number, and it's driving me crazy. I've even tried deleting the pairing and re-pairing, re-editing, and still nothing. My iPod Nano works perfectly with voice commands, as does dialing by saying "Call 5152223333" works perfectly.

*sigh* I guess it doesn't work with iPhone 3Gs.

You must fix all names and numbers for it to work for any of the names. As a test, try deleting all but two or three of the contacts. Now see if it will work that way. If it does, keep adding more back in until it stops working. Maybe then you can find the name/number that is killing it.

That's news to me! OK I'll work on it and check back!

Thank you!

Edit the number so there is not a 1 in the number. xxx xxx xxxx.

only use 10 numbers.

As I've gotten quite a few PM's piling up in my inbox asking about this process, I'd like to recap the pertinent details here.

Getting the d-base from your F series is covered in the Stephanie's post found HERE

Editing the d-base can be done using a firefox addon or using SQlite Database Browser found here http://sqlitebrowser.sourceforge.net/index.html.

The phone numbers should be in 10 digit format, remove any 1 or +1 from the beginning - ex. 0005551212, not 10005551212 and especially not 1 (000) 555-1212

The contacts themselves should not consist of anything at all besides alphanumerics (numbers and letters) - this means no dashes, colons, commas, ampersands(&), or anything else that doesn't fall under number/letter anywhere in any contact, just one tiny dash in 200 contacts will screw the whole thing up.

The dwtype is as follows

1 = Home

2 = Work

3 = Mobile

You could also use 0 if you are against setting it as home, work, or mobile
