Ravage, I agree with you that hibernation is not going to cut it. Having said that, you're wrong that Win CE can't boot faster. Depending on what drivers you need to load, it could have operational GUI for at least the audio sources before it would start working on loading Navi in the background. That way they have the audio part down before they load navi drivers and program and lastly they could load the video drivers. That alone would speed up the perceived boot time. Right now everything gets loaded before you're allowed to use the head unit and that may not be necessary.

I agree that Ravage is WAY off base by stating that WinCE is slow in general. How they are loading the OS is slow, but there is still room for improvement. Its not like there is a min 60 sec counter for WinCE to boot.

Are you guys really that gullible?

Guy's I've worked with WinCE as a developer and while you can change the way it can boot to some extent it is unlikely to happen for the Avic.

There are just too many required components needed for it to boot at a speed which you would expect for a normal stereo.

I am saying that they can make changes and probably will improve some aspects, but the time savings you are expecting just won't come.

You can bitch about me all you want, but that will not change the facts.

The Zs takes 30-45 seconds to fully boot and I don't remember so many people bitching about them. Maybe thats what they are shooting for with the new update

Posted Oct 21, 2008 · 03:49 UTC#29

The F series takes upto a couple minutes for full functionality.

Posted Oct 21, 2008 · 04:29 UTC#30

Mine maxes out at a little over one minute. The point of my post was perhaps pioneer has figured out how to make it boot like the Z series which is 30-45 seconds. Nobody ever complains about them so maybe thats what this update is for

So I wasn't saying it won't boot faster, I was saying it won't boot in 10 seconds like mentioned at the start of the posts.

So booting in 50 secs compared to a minute is likley to be where this confusion came from. It's more than likely 10 seconds faster and not boots in 10 seconds.

Big difference here.

Posted Oct 21, 2008 · 04:58 UTC#32

i bet it boots just a bit faster. I'm waiting to bite on the avic-f90bt until i see this update come out this week.

Posted Oct 21, 2008 · 05:05 UTC#33

I can't wait to get mine. It should arrive on the 22nd.

Even with a minute boot time at $500 if fantastic!

Posted Oct 21, 2008 · 05:57 UTC#34

Isn't the problem with the boot time not so much how long for full functionality, but rather the time it takes for music to come on? I remember that being a big issue, that iPod music takes 20-25 seconds to come on...even so, personally I'm used to how the system works so unless the update has very promising fixes, I probably wont bother to install it.

Posted Oct 21, 2008 · 09:01 UTC#35

there is also another problem. the sat nav part of this unit...

if the sat nav is starting this slow as it does most people are already driving their vehicles while it still boots. this does create a problem with the calibration of the sat nav. when you park your vehicle the sat nav remembers your position and uses that the moment the sat nav boots up. now every day the sat nav has to recalibrate it self since when the sat nav software is up and running the position is not the same. it takes about 1 minute to start and in 1 minute you can be far away from the last known position. also now people are by passing their boxes to use it while driving since nobody is gone wait the time when the sat nav is available for use. this brings another problem, road safety... all with all a bad design of bad software and under powered hard ware.

so lets hope they rewite the whole script spagetti and give us the box we all wanted.

Won't rewriting the entire thing erase our hacks? and if they rewrite it, is it even possible to put the original hacks back?? Not worth it IMO.

Posted Oct 21, 2008 · 14:47 UTC#37

Putting original hacks back in (assuming they don't fix things like green boxes themselves) should be significantly easier if they clean scripts. They really should just hire someone like Gurjon or diMka to rewrite the whole thing for them anyway.

Now, the GPS unit starts doing its thing as soon as it receives power, so the boot time should not affect it in any way. Besides, after a long enough time period being in the same position or away won't affect fix time. For me at least, by the time the unit has booted up, it always has a fix.

Not all developers are made the same though wouldn't you agree. I myself work in the computer/portable devices industry and have some first hand knowledge of embedded OS's. Even in my previous life, I worked on a Digital Picture Frame that had wireless connectivity among other things. That platform ran WinCE as well and it only took 15 seconds to boot.

You can even customized an embedded version of WinXP to boot relativity quick. This is what they use for electronic kiosks, Point of Sales Systems (Cash Registers), etc...

i talked to pioneer yesterday and the guy said that the only thing he knew for sure that will be in this fix is the problem with blackberry's and bluetooth. I asked specifically about a test mode lockout, but he said he didn't know. I hope they don't lock that. But he also said that he knows the update is soon, just not how soon.

I am going to call again here in a few minutes just to ask about it and will post once I talk to them.

Locking testmode out wouldn't be too difficult if they did it right (not that I'm going to give Pioneer any ideas) though it seems they have ITT students doing their coding.

Just got off the phone with pioneer after waiting on the phone for a while. But this was a different guy and he said that the update is basically performance related. Boot-Up included, but he didn't know exactly what was going to be done to increase boot up. Also some bluetooth issues are going to be addressed, the blackberry staying connected is one of them. also said he knew nothing of a test mode lock out either.

said that the update is something within the next month. Not sure if that is this month or next month. Said that if the testers find a problem, they have to recode the entire thing for some reason. but yeah, thats what i was told

I just go off the phone with pioneer...The update will here today....It will go up on site in afternoon....this is the information that he heard yesterday.

Posted Oct 21, 2008 · 17:46 UTC#46

i hope they do fix the blackberry issue...i got my first cell phone ticket yesterday because of that stupid thing not working on a business call...i swear to God i nearly pulled the unit out of my dashboard and smashed it to the ground.. :x i was pissed...spent nearly a G on a unit for its bluetooth and it doesn't work with such a common phone like the blackberry...ludacris...anywhom i'll post the results with the new FW regarding bberry/BT if indeed becomes available, or i will get rid of it next week, not waiting for another ticket...

Sweet, I hope your not just yanking our chain, if you are, i Have a feeling we will be having a bomb fire outside consisting of Pioneer f series units and lots of gasoline hahahaha.

Hey all!

First off I am new here so I'd just like to say hi to everyone! All of your posts have been very helpful to me.

Mizifreak, sorry to hear about your ticket. I can completely see that being as frustrating as possible. I kind of face the same situation with the iPod failure issue. I spent 1G+ on this unit MAINLY for the iPod connectivity and yet the iPod drops out at least once a day. Reaching into my glovebox to reconnect a cable everytime I want to hear music is not my idea of convenient OR safe by any means.

Other than the BT\iPod drop-out issues, I am completely satisfied with this unit and I think it would be a HUGE mistake for Pioneer to sleep on correcting these issues ASAP. Here's hoping that the update comes out today and that it improves these two issues!

Just got off the phone with pioneer. they dont have a ETA on the update. they are currently testing the update and estimating the release around mid of november. the fixes are the blackberry, touch 2.0, BOOT UP TIME, and few other things. soo till then, ill be waiting.

Do you guys think this update will solve the touchscreen resonse time issue?
