Fonts file is here and please copy to the SD card

This is a .cab installation file for Asian characters. It contains a font file and a Asian wince.nls file and some settings.

Font file: It's Google DroidSansFallback.ttf fonts from Google Phone. It supports and is limited to Traditional Chinese, Simplied Chinese, Japanese and Korean. If you want to display language other than these, please refer other's thread here for referance.

wince.nls file: Current default wince.nls file in the system doesn't support Asian language setting and also wince.nls is hidden so that it's not that straightforward to overwrite. This .cab file helps you to bring out the hidden file and overwrite it.

Installation step 1: double click that file on the SD card and installnation begins. When it prompts want to overwrite a system or hidden file, please click "yes" anyway.

(please keep in mind after execute .cab files, it will extract and install and the original .cab will be deleted, please have a backup in your computer)

Installation step 2: change your default language setting, please go to regedit (See P.S.)and find out [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\nls] and change the "defaultLCID" value from 409 to your language. Trad. Chinese is 404, Simp. Chinese is 804 and Japanese is 411 (Sorry I don't know the Korean, please provide if you know one)

P.S. The way to edit registry: Go to

http://www.phm.lu/downloads/download.aspx?{940B734A-C437-41C7-ADED-2A4418802FD3}

and download Handheld PC Pro, 2000 (ARM) . its a registry editor and put it on your SD card

Installation step 3: remove and SD card and reboot. That's it, just two steps.

Again, once you boot with test mode again, all the settings will be gone. You have to start over. But it is not really a big deal though.

FYI, change number in step 2 to hexidecimal before you change the number

It works like a charm. Thanks a lot, dude.

Thanks for the hack!

For some reason, approx every 5-6 boots of the system, the fonts will no longer function and I'll have to reinstall the fonts hack.

Anyone experiencing this problem?

Posted Nov 17, 2008 · 06:11 UTC#5

Yep, same problem here. I think we just need to flood Pioneer with requests that they add foreign charachter support. It should be a relatively simple addition for them, and I'm sure they'd have no problem doing it if enough people requested it.

hi, I just got my f700bt yesterday. I was reading the web for a solution on reading chinese fonts. Instead of adding another font file in the system, is it possible to rename DroidSansFallback.ttf to the default .ttf that the system is using and then just copy to the system and replace the original .ttf file ??

I tried replacing tahoma.ttf in the windows directory with my own font file and it didn't work (MSPINCHO). I also copied a wince.nls file from a Japanese system as well. I guess I am destined to have blocky id3 tags. :o

I tried both the methods in both threads. I thought being a software engineer would help but it didn't. :P

The link to the registry editor is dead. Can you please fix it. Thanks.

So when I try to run reloadnls.exe or the one you provided (usemynls.exe) it says they can't be run. I don't know if the issue is that these files can't be called and the old nls in memory is the one that keeps getting run.

Bah!! This seems like an issue a lot of people have dealt with in the past but all the stuff they did that works for them isn't working for this device.

Copy and paste the entire thing will work

I tried the asian font mods many times and it never worked for me. Tried it again a few minutes ago after the firmware 2.0 upgrade. Sigh.. Hopefully, some smart people there can figure it out one day.

 I said the same thing earlier. I tried so many things it is ridiculous. I thought maybe this thread or the other thread missed something in windows ce for font overloading but it seems like all the stuff is there and it should theoretically work.

Posted Feb 08, 2009 · 10:35 UTC#15

i'm pretty sure that korean value is 412.

The mod only worked for a day and after the reboot back to the

way it was.

i guess still no fix for this issue

Only lasted one boot up. :( Just booted up normally, not test mode. Anyone figure out a permanent solution?

Posted Mar 19, 2009 · 06:41 UTC#17

I have been using this D_ChineseSupportAllButImput.cab successfully. But there are times when the f500bt does require a soft boot up and i would loose the D_Chinese set up. It would be nice if someone knows how to build an executable file onto the SDcard, and then it would automatically 1)copy the D_ChineseSupportAllButImput.cab file restore from a backup location, and then 2)execute this file auto-magically. I hate this files because it will delete itself after execution which is totally inconvenient to restore it after each use. It seems the concept is do-able, except that i am not good enough do hack the software. thanks for reading.

Another bump for a permanent solution please~!@ Any expert~!@

How to make it permanent ... asian fonts.

My understanding is that you can do an analogy to how Windows XP or whatever version of Windows boots. If you didn't boot completely to Windows then pull the power OFF or press reset, on next boot-up it will prompt you to go to normal mode because Windows thinks that there is a problem. In the case of the AVIC HU, Windows CE is an embedded operation system, the normal mode doesn't really exist so what it does is to reset all settings to default, including your modification for the asian fonts. The resetting will also occur if you soft-reset the HU with the in-dash button.

The idea is to start the car before the AVIC has enough time to go to the booting process. Usually if after you turn the key to the first position (ACC), you either let it boots completely or you have to start the car within 2 seconds or so.

Hope that this helps.

Do you think the fonts will stay if we added unicode glyphs to the font file and then replaced this with the original font file stored on the unit?

Please see link below for example of what I mean:

http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?t=55408

This should get around the part where Windows will restore the registry back to default.

Posted Sep 15, 2010 · 13:48 UTC#25

The problem is not the glyphs thing, it is because there is a safety switch built into the AVIC to reset to factory WinCE state when a reset occurs. This is the case whenever you boot into Testmode, and sometime when AVIC detects something unusual.

So even if you overwrite the default font files with new ones, WinCE still reverts to factory condition when reset occurs.
