Thanks minifreezer. The only reason I'm so skeptical is because I have a buddy who works at Future Shop and does car audio installation and when he tried to do the bypass for someone using the hardware bypass, it worked for a few days and then stopped working for some reason. And he says he triple checked all the connections and that they were soldered so I can't understand why it wouldn't work for him. His friend's using the 2.0 firmware too. Any ideas why it may not have worked?
AVIC-F Hardwire Bypass for Dummies
yea it definatly works, i just did it on a 2000 BMW 528i. I hooked up my Avic F700bt to it, works like a beauty. Its a 2.0 also!
easy as hell to do this hardwire bypass, i just grounded mute wire, and brake wire to the radio ground along with the harness!
Looks like that nobody really dont know why pin 4 grounded and looks it that it is widely know turkey
The parking brake wire usually sends an on/off signal from the parking brake to the Head Unit. By grounding it you are telling the unit that the parking brake is always off. If you don't ground this wire you get an error saying the unit is wired incorrectly.
The other pin (the one that we are using the MUTE wire to ground) is a safety bypass signal. Grounding this signal is what actualy bypasses the parking brake safety measures so you can use the unit while in motion. At least that is my understanding.
Because i have near to pioneer i pleased to chack this in service manual and lets wait have some info what that pin really do because all my infos about is only in light green grounded wire.
This is for eur version but in past it was only light green.
When i got some news will post info
In service manual there is about pin 4 only written that it is K-mot pin but no other description. Really it is connected via diode to processor.
Because we dont know what it really do, I will ground inly light green wire and will compare how unit works with you in this forum.

Sorry for the long wait to reply. I dont know why it only worked for a couple of days then stop. The only thing i can think of is that the mute wire worked its way out of the pin slot. I am an Eletronics and Environmetal Specialist in the Air Force and I have seen pins come lose from plugs but still had just enough bite on its mate than when you unplug the connector it pulled the pin back into position, but when you plug the connector back up it would the pin would get pushed backwards. I got my f90bt with 2.0 already installed did the hardwire bypass and have not had a prob since, and it has been about 6 weeks.
Yeasterday I come back from F900BT installation, on my wish they grounded only light green wire and nothing other do with mute 4 pin .
Device can fully control during drive, videos plays, and I try test mode is accessible too and reneme that horrible key beeps to _old files so now it is faster and silent.
What I have is Europe F900BT. Because nobody can tell here why use that 4 pin grounded, I recommend not use it because you can in some cases demage device and got same result with grounded light green wire.

On the US units if you dont move the mute wire and ground it the unit gives a screen stating that the parking brake wire is not connected correctly, or something to that affect.
Interesting, but can be because other country versions, in this case would be great to paste this info as sticky topic only with this information.
Took me awhile to get this all figured out and I had to draw from multiple sources since the other hardwire bypass thread is littered with conflicting information and information on the software bypass which is irrelevant if you do the hardwire bypass. So, with credit to those whose pictures I'm using, here you go:
NOTE: THIS IS THE PURE HARDWARE BYPASS. IF YOU DO THIS BYPASS, YOU DO NOT NEED TO DO THE SOFWARE BYPASS. PLEASE DO NOT ASK SOFTWARE BYPASS QUESTIONS IN THIS THREAD.
I disagree with the the statement that you do not need to do the software bypass-at least on the F500, if you just ground the parking break wire, unless you change the "parking_break_speed=16.0" speed to a greater value, you might as well not even bother grounding the parking break wire as those functions that the bypass enables won't be available over 10 mph. One other thing to mention. The parking break speed in "parking_break_speed=16.0" is in Kilometers per hour. If you set it to 128, the functions that the bypass enables will be blacked out at 80 mph. I changed mine to 256 as while I don't often drive over 80 mph, I want the full functionality if I do.
i was browsing this site to get familiar with the F series before mine came. Thanks to all the advice here; my f700BT came yesterday and i have been doing all the pre wiring before I open up my car. I used a sewing pin to release the mute wire and it came out instantly. Reinserting was just as easy, I bent it in the L shaped as suggested and it slid in and clicked with ease. Hope it translates over when I do the install.
What happens to the Onstar mute option when used with a GMOS-04 Onstar adapter? Has anyone used this mod and still used onstar?
I read this total tread, and I'm still not getting it, why are you guys connecting pin4 with ground? What does pin 4 do? I only connected the parking brake wire and it works like a charm. But maybe that is because of the f700 not having dvd?

I can't speak to the f700, but for the 900/90, if you just ground the parking brake wire, it apparently also checks that your speed is still below XX, unless you do the additional mute pin move/ground. If you search, you'll find that the "software" bypass involves increasing this speed limit by modifying the code, thus raising the limit to some arbitrarily high value. In that case, only the parking wire needs to be grounded.

The statement is accurate. This thread describes grounding the parking break wire AND the mute wire relocation and grounding. If that's done properly, no software bypass is necessary.

So can anyone tell me what this bypass allows the unit to do? Will my reverse cam still work correctly? Sounds easier than the software hack and a lil less risky.

you'll be able to have full access to navigation, settings and play videos while moving
ok so i finally did the install of my f700bt in under 2.5 hrs and everything went smooth and works perfectly except I don't know if the bypass took really. I get the nav warning as usual, and get the nav menu but the Destination option is grayed out and I can't access it when driving or in park. I can access the POI option and that works perfectly while I am driving. Routes and everything. So did the bypass take? How can I access the Destination option? I did the hardware mod-- moved the mute wire then grounded that with the parking brake wire to the frame. Thanks so much.
ok i did some more trial and error, i get the strictly prohibited message when trying to play video through the AV sources even when parked. I am guessing the parking brake isnt properly grounded?
alright, 3rd times a charm! went back to check wiring today. looks like the tap I used to link the pbrake and ground didn't pierce. Hardwired the pbrake to the frame and now everything works. thanks for all the past posts that emphasized checking the connections!
Hi,
I just completed a 4600 mile cross country trip in a very different car including doing Route 66. I grew to really hate the GPS as it assumes I don't have a passenger that could check to see what gas stations were coming up, etc. So I found this forum and this thread. Appreciate all that has been written so far.
My situation seems a bit unique as the AVIC comes standard in my car without the mating white connectors. The wires are tied directly into a harness in the car. This is a different car. A Rossion Q1.
So... in my attempt to understand the mods and figure out how to use this, I pulled out the head unit and found a light green wire that connected to a wire (directly) which ran into the harness and presumably toward the handbrake. Step one was to ground the hand brake wire, so I connected the light green wire to an existing ground wire (black) coming off the AVIC. I know there is some controversy as if you need to run a separate ground, but that is how I did it.
Now, I am getting an error. One, the car is showing a brake error light to my surprise. I guess the dash wants to see the wire that was connected to the AVIC connected? This confuses me.
Also, I would like to do the mute wire mod, but without a connector... I don't think this works. I read that people are using the mute wire only because it is an accessible wire not being used otherwise and that in reality, you are grounding pin 4 on the connector. Since I don't have a connector, is there a wire color that was connected to pin 4? I am not sure what to ground.
My alternative would be to combine the hand brake mod and the software mod, which may be the route I go. But I would like to understand if possible the mute wire deal.
Thanks.

You now need to cut the green wire where it heads back into the car, after where you grounded it. When you are done, a green wire will come out of the radio and be grounded to an existing black wire. (That stuff about needing a separate ground is nonsense.)
On the car harness, you will have a green wire that is cut and not grounded. Now the car will be happy and not think the parking brake is applied.
It sounds like you now must do the software mod to prevent the improper connection warning.
Installed Avic F90bt into G35 infiniti with no problem using JDM kit... no problem hardwire bypass, I do have 1/2 inch gap at the bottom .... need to figured out how to cover the gap.....forgot and started the car to move inside garage with airbag plug disconnect now airbag light flashing....found info how to reset will try and see if that work....
*make sure the mute wire is inserted "all of the way".
I had this problem....works perfect now.
