I just installed my x920 yesterday and if i let the radio boot up fully while xm is on, then turn on my headlights the sound for xm and only xm disappears. The screen and full control is still up and if i change my source the sound is normal, but xm sound will either be gone or quiet and distorted or only on half of my speakers. I am also using extrernal amp as well. Called pioneer and they were just basically baffled and he said try disconnecting the dimmer wire and see if it still does it. Well obviously it wont do it since its not gonna trigger whatever problem is there. I had a f900bt before this one and never had this problem. I have been an installer of car audio and electronics for 10 years and ive installed this unit perfectly. Only thing i can think of is that all the older units always had a resistor on the harness for the dimmer wire and the x920 does not. If anyone has seen or heard of this issue yet please let me know!!!! Its pissing me the hell off!!!!!

don't know why the illumination wire input would affect the audio at all. How much voltage is on that wire?

Posted Jul 01, 2010 · 12:45 UTC#3

Its 13.5 with the car running and the parking lights on but remember its the dimmer wire so it goes up and downwhen you twist it, like most cars. I did notice that when i pull it out to turn the headlights on the wire drops to a quick 12.5 though, but i dont understand why that would affect the audio on xm and only xm.

Ok heres an update, its not the dimmer wire because i just tried unhooking it and it still does it the second i put the headlights on. Going to rip it completely out and re install everything just to try it see what happens. ill keep you posted

the chokes do work, what i did was buy 4 and put 2 on each HID ballast, one where the plug from the car connects to the ballast and the other at the other end of that plug and it fixed it. ive been turning my headlights on an off for the past 20 mins straight and the sound did not go away

I spoke to pioneers head tech guy and he said to trey and ground one of my rca cables. He also said to try and hook up a speaker to the internal amp to see if that shuts off as well and it did. so its not an external problem its deff inside the unit. I have been running the grounded rca for about a week now and no problems as of yet.

I am having the same problem. Every time I turn on my headlights (they are HIDs) the unit cuts out sound. What are the chokes and where did you get them from and what do they do?

Posted Aug 16, 2010 · 02:46 UTC#10

Are those HID's OEM or an aftermarket kit?

Posted Aug 16, 2010 · 05:33 UTC#11

My HIDs are aftermarket. I had an F90BT and it never did this. Plus, the issue only happens when the headlights come on when the AVIC has been running. If I am starting the car the unit works fine. I wonder what with the HIDs is causing this issue.

Just read through some other posts and found out that apparently Pioneer is now aware of the situation and that it has to do with the HIDs putting out a frequency that messes with the unit. Man that blows. Hopefully a fix is discovered soon enough.

Remove the relayed harness to the battery of your HIDs and wire them straight to the harness from the car and the problem will go away.

Well the question I have is why do the relay harnesses cause this problem? If we can determine why it's causing a problem, we can determine the solution. The relay harnesses are used for a reason. It protects the ballasts and provides a better power source.

Try installing a rectifying diode across the HID relay coil (85, 86) to see if that helps, report back.

I dont know. I just know this is the solution. Relayed harnesses are more optional then required. Also do you have 55w or 35w ballast?

How about this one, i dont even have relays installed for my hids. Just running off the stock wiring. ANd by the way its not just the xm audio its all audio, ipod am fm cd whatever. However the ding sound still plays through the amp when youpress a button.

Tried the fix and it didn't work for me. Arrrgh. I hope Pioneer can fix the problem soon or I am not going to be a happy camper.

Posted Aug 23, 2010 · 13:22 UTC#19

What fix did you try?

Posted Aug 24, 2010 · 16:29 UTC#20

Removing the relays.

I have been trying to help pioneer with the fix, ive given them every bit of information i can, and have spoken to neumerous tech people from there. They are trying to figure out what to do. Its gonna take time and more feedback though. I hope they fix it soon too, i can say try to use a digital ballast. I installed some a few days ago and its been alot better. It will still do it but not as much as before. Also you can ground one of your rca cables to improve this issue, doesnt ure it but makes it better. And also does everyone thats having this same problem as me have an external amplifier hooked up to this unit and if so what kind? They wanna hear about it. ANd if you dont have one and it still does this problem post it up in this forum as well, as the guys from pioneer are checking out this forum day to day from what they tell me. The more symptoms/issues we post up about this topic, the closer they can get to figuring out the answer for what to do to solve this very strange confusing problem.

Having the same issue on an Avic z120bt, with aftermarket HIDs on a 2008 Silverado Crew Cab. I do have an aftermarket amp, AQ1200 amp.

Well try out what has been suggested here and come back with the results.

Got a relay harness off ebay, installed it, issue is still there. I have HIDs in my low beams and in my fogs, but the fogs have no affect on the stereo, just my low beams. Very annoyed.

The relay harness causes the problem.
