My bad! I guess it wasn't saved. Unlocked and finished successfully. Thank you Garret for the terrific instructions.
Another happy z3 upgrade!

Finally, after 4 trys.... Torrents suck....
But, now I'm updated. Thanks for the updates.
here is the question i got and i appreciate any thought,
since i need lots of space for storing music, i bought a 250gb hdd and hddunlock said its unlocked, so i used arconis and copied all 4 partitions over (didnt used the usb converter, connected to motherboard directly) but when i put it in avic-z2, it said hdd is not accessable, and also in process of copying files over, acronis had an option to copy the mbr whichi wasnt choisen by default, so i didnt select it.
any thoughts please?
thanks

Your hard drive is WAY too big. There is an album limit and a drive any larger than about 60GB is a waste because you'll hit the limit.
Is the drive you bought even a Toshiba drive?

no its not toshiba, im having difficulty finding toshiba automotive hdd around here...
so would you please explaing this limit? how about if i adjust the partition and imaging the operating system?
thnks
The limit is imposed by the firmware. I don't remember the exact limit (it is posted on the forums somewhere though) but once you hit it, the unit won't record any more music.

i c.
sometimes i wish i would've gotten into software engineering instead of network so i would be writing a new firmware for unit that would take any kinda HDD with any space.
anyway, thanks for ur responces.
btw, do u know any good place for toshiba automobile hdd with good price i just blown mine (the original) mistakingly last night. lol

Depends on the drive model. Some work better in the car than others. MUST be Toshiba and MUST be PATA (SATA will not work).

i get that pata part, im in computer networking (but unfortunately know none about software) so as long as its toshiba and of course as you said, pata, then the size shouldt matter?
oh btw does it matter what type of ide inter face it is? ata8 ata-9.....?
tnx
thanks

IDE interface should not mater, since the larger drives are backwards compatible with the older drives. Also, do not partition more than 60gb of the drive as it may cuase crash and reboots.

thanks, so any thing after 60GB would remain unpartitioned, but acronis give me an option to duplicate the drive signature and MBR, should that be chosen?

I pulled out my hard drive after using the Pioneer DVD and now it shows up under device manager but not under disk administrator. Also, I have downloaded the Z3 acronis backup image several times and acronis tells me that it is not a valid backup. Please offer any suggestions as I am desperate.
Thanks,
Scott
Does anyone know if this works with SATA connection instead of IDE? Someone else asked but I don't think it was ever answered. I am only finding IDE to USB when I look for IDE to SATA...they also mentioned you can not unlock the HDD if using SATA. Is that true?
The hard drive can be unlocked under Windows via USB or IDE only. Security can be disabled using a DOS boot disk and IDE only.
Garret,
HDD unlock does not see my USB to IDE drive listed. Any suggestions?

I just looked on their support page, and I was wrong...
Can I unlock a USB/FireWire hard drive? Can I use a USB adapter to unlock my hard drive? HDD Unlock Wizard requires direct access to the hard drive; it is impossible to unlock a hard drive via USB or FireWire adapter or enclosure. You would have to remove the hard drive out of the enclosure and attach it to any working PC as a secondary drive.
I have tried hooking it up to my PC via the IDE channel and the unlock software sees it, tells me that the drive is frozen. I have looked at via MHDD and I can see that it is locked. I ran EID but I get an error with that command. I also went out an pruchased a PCI IDE but as soon as I hook it up, the PC locks up. I am running windows XP SP3 with an intel 955x motherboard. When I put the drive back in the Z1 it tells me that the HDD is unusable and will not even boot the service DVD or do a factory default reset by holding down the map button.
I'm a newb as you can see by my post count but I updated my Z2 successfully tonight. Thanks to all in this awesome community!
finally done, 60gb HDD.
thank you so much
so here my another question: how do import pictures and music?
i cant find a program to convert mp3/wma tp at3
thanks
Anybody have any suggestions? I am desperate.
Is the drive connected via IDE? Is the drive connected to the IDE correctly? Did you connect the drive to IDE 'incorrectly' and power it up (this can short the board on the drive)?
I have tried several IDE cables and even purchased a seperate IDE card yesterday. The only thing I can think of is that I am not using a dual IDE controller. The card from yesterday was a single and my motherboard is a single port IDE. I am going to make a trip today to return the card and see if I can find a dual channel IDE card. That is the only thing I can think of. The 2 disk unlock utilities listed in the instructions of the thread see the drive, they just can't do anything with it.
As for the drive itself, I can see it under MHDD using the EID command. When I try to run the config command I get a DCO Itentity Checksum Error. I also can boot into Linux and I used HDPARM and the drive shows that it is healthy, but it is locked.
I really appreciate your help on this. I hope that when we solve this mystery that the thread will help others that encounter this.
Thanks again,
Scott
