Works for me. DVD playback @ 60MPH. Just gotta not kill anyone now.
AVIC D3 Bypass with PICTURE!!!
Alot of this has to do with the installers not knowing anybetter. Most don't care to dig and find out for sure if it can be bypassed unless they're putting one in their personal cars. My car for instance, the d1 was hooked up properly until I found this place and how to do the bypass. I was told the system couldn't be bypassed and I beleived it. The final problem with doing the bypass is it is illegal in all 50 states to have video in view of the driver. Yes installers have been taken to court because of accidents cause by that too. So in the end no I'm not risking my job or a suit because a customer wants be to bypass their nav system.

There's a video on you tube showing a guy driving with a dvd playing, so it definately works for a least one person. Some installers refuse to do the bypass. I can't help but wonder if these guys have been ordered by their boss to lie about the bypass, because if they admit they won't do it, you might go somewhere else.
Guys,
I searched and can't find an answer to this... does this mod then make the mute function of the unit not work?
thanks for your help!
Which mute function are you talking about?
Can you press mute? Yes.
Can the BTB100/200 mute the unit? yes
Can an external device mute the unit (like a Parrot BT adapter)? No.
The PAC steering wheel module actually

It will still mute. As stated above the ONLY thing that won't be able to mute is a separate handsfree kit.
yup only thing it does.
I haven't seen this question asked yet. Technically, what is this change in wiring over-riding, exactly? I know it works, but I'd like to know how it works. If it's over-riding the unit's brain into thinking it's sitting in a stopped position, won't that the cause the navigation portion to display the wrong information?
Honestly, I'm not really concerned about video playback while moving. It would obviously be cool, but what I'm more concerned about is making changes to my navigation route while moving.
I know it works, I'd just like to know how it works. You know what I mean?
I echo what petejonesrn asked - definitely curious on what the bypass is technically doing.

While I cant speak from personal knowledge, my guess is this:
The movement of the pin is the key. It probably doesn't ACTUALLY matter which pin you move to the new location, only that you have A pin there (it just so happens that the MUTE pin is nearby and not very useful).
As to the specialness of the new location, I suspect it is placed there as 1 of 2 things:
1) A developer debugging tool, that is left in the final design.
2) An intentional 'for the customer' bypass for use in non-car application (e.g. in the back seat of a motorhome, or in a boat).
I would bet dollars to donuts that using the bypass has literally 0 harmful effect on the navi accuracy of the system.
Combination of 1 and 2. Allows for system tests on the bench as well as provides usability in vehicles that don't have a standard parking brake setup.

Are you being serious?
yes I have 2 of them D2 and I just bought another D3. I've read it look like D2 and D3 same.

Then you're not reading right. The d1/2 are the same. The d3 is a whole new can of worms. The d1/2 bypass is different and can be found with the search button.
Just had best buy install the D3 in my Scion xB....they refused to do the bypass even though I told them and showed them the picture. So right after they were done with the install I pulled out of the bay and hooked it up myself....works like a charm!!
I would be interested in hearing from more people who have had the bypass work for them and those who haven't.
I'm trying to decide whether to install this myself or let the pros do it.
I'm not an installer and would prefer to have the pros do it - but if I can't get the bypass (ie nav changes while driving) then I'll have to do the whole install myself.
Did the people who are having problems connect the parking wire and the mute wire to the ground wire or elsewhere on the chassis? If so, does anyone have a clue what their problem is?
BTW, if anyone needs a crutchfield referral code - pleas PM or email me [email protected].
I know this is a shameless attempt to save myself some extra beans - but the pioneer speakers I ordered suck and I need to replace them with infinity.
r123, I have NEVER done anything with mobile electronics, it was extremely simple to follow the picture (ONCE BEST BUY INSTALLED THE WHOLE THING). I just simply stripped the ground wire and twisted off the mute and parking brake wire......I also had to cut the parking brake wire that Best Buy installed. If i didnt cut the parking brake wire it still would of worked but the "brake" light would have remained on. Hope that helps....feel free to ask anything else
if you didnt repin the mute wire before grounding it ,then its not going to work once you drive over like 20 mph

Unless you have brain damage or parkinsons, you can do this yourself. Seriously. To do the bypass, you tie 3 wires together. Its not that hard.
I encourage MOST people to also do their full install. If Metra makes a wiring harness for your car, and you've ever even heard of soldering iron before, you can do it. I do respect that there are some cars that are harder than others, but if there is a wiring bracket for your application, you can do it.
same q as r2d2 or what ever his name is. what WORKS BEST GROUNDING ALL THREE WIRES TOGETHER OR INDIVIDUALY?!?!?!?!?!WHAT CONNECTION IS MORE SUTIBLE FOR THE LEAST AMOUNT OF PROBLEMS?!?!?!

Capslock off.
I've never installed or removed a car stereo before...and managed to install the D3 (w/ Bypass) just fine. The hardest part for me was to neatly hide the ipod wire - and route the gps wire. Of which both took minimal effort.
After doing this myself, I'm amazed at the prices best buy/circuit city charge to do this.
I was surprised at the simplicity of the bypass - it was so easy, I thought for sure I had missed a step. But no, it worked flawlessly.
Good luck!

i am not new to installs of in dash units as i have done all my installs myself in my cars, but i do have a queston about the bypass.
after i move the mute wire up, where dose the wire go that grounds the parking break and the mute wire. am i connecting this ground wire to the harness, or what? i did not get the unit yet, just waiting for my best buy to get them in so i can get discount but i want to be prepaired.
The black wire in the harness is fine
