It's a Fujitsu MHV2080AH (80 gig drive). I don't have partition sizes or anything, it's what ever pulp sent to me.

I didn't write down what I created this drive with partition wise but I do know that I've tried several different combinations. I even let Ghost increase the sizes on its own once and all of them have worked for me.

Now you are just showing off! :) or are you just rubbing it in? One of those....

just rubbing it in....

Looks like I'm gonna have go pay a visit!
Posted Jul 21, 2006 · 18:30 UTC#229
I'm waiting for some smart ass to "demand" I find a way to prove what I have works.

Showing off will be when I get something NEW to work on this thing.
Posted Jul 23, 2006 · 11:11 UTC#230
I don't think it has anything to do with partition size or cluster size. I think it must have something to do with the Z1 itself.

What shows up for version number on your System Info screen Pulp?
Posted Nov 24, 2006 · 23:32 UTC#231
could the lockups be caused by the new drives useing too much power
or puting out too much heat
Posted Nov 25, 2006 · 00:38 UTC#232
some info on the flash memory

format type: FAT16

cluster size 1KB

So you said you found a way to get into the HDD without removing it from the Z1? Via some USB port? Where exactly is this port and window of opportunity? And also you found a way to get files to the HDD? Let's hear some more on this. I am a bit skeptical.
Posted Nov 30, 2006 · 07:13 UTC#235
sorry i cant be more tech on it but i dont know to much the usb port would be the ports on the back for conneting the i pod and tv they dont look like they are but in the serves menu it shows them as usb ports
as for loading the files to the hdd here is my theory get a program for windows ce load it on to a cd or dvd and put it in side then go into the serves menu and there is a way to eather exicute from the disk or save the files to the hdd or to the flash which has quite a bit of room which doesnt make sence becasue windows ce should be biger then it is from what i understand from window ce and servec menu is that if u try to run the program it will be fine as long as it works with the cpu thats in the z1 and the video system any ways if u dig around in the servece menu u should be able to figure it out but at least if u can create a way to make the right kind of audio files and the playlists it will be no prob to a them from a dvd to the hdd throw the servece menu.

SOrry to be ignorant..

But ive played aroudn with the service menu...but havent been able to figure out how to copy a file from the cd to the hd.

Once I can do that, then i can play aroudn with teh audio formats. I'm too chicken sh*t to pull a hd out of such an expensive unit, to have it unlocked, and copy files to it. (Call me a p*ssy).
Posted Nov 30, 2006 · 16:40 UTC#237
I believe that there is not only a music format issue (not being MP3) for ease of copying to the hard drive, but there are other files on the hard drive (think of them as play list files) that need to be created and edited in order to copy music to the hard drive. That "play list" file needs to be analyzed and cracked so we can write a program to look at our "mp3's" on our computer and then transfer then to whatever the Z1 uses (AT3 I believe) and then create the correct play list files so the Z1 will actually see the new music files.
Posted Dec 01, 2006 · 00:26 UTC#238
ya the z1 uses at3 but it damages the file names it leaves nothing about the file, insted it uses playlists that just show the location and name of the file we need to forces on creating play lists then we can try useing at3s but try useing normal ones maby we dont need to damage them for it to work. i sure that the playlist fromat is just some rip off of something eles also i was wrong about copying files form disk to hdd the servece menue will only let u do this if u also copy files to the flash its used from re doing the hole thing at once but the menu will let u copy files from the hdd to USB so one of the conntions on the back is really just a usb port . and i had a nother idea will windows ce if given the option let u not boot from the hdd and boot from a cd if. so say a disk with a program for copying files could be used to add files to the hdd, or you could load any program for windows ce and for the cpu.

so if it helps i have a pic of my z1 torn apart from where i had to fix it when someone tried to steal it. other than that, i have i question for those of you who have unlocked you drives. can you edit or rearange the songs stored in the library? i am pretty anal about the little stuff and i have a few cd's that are out of order and can be hard to find and would like to put them in the right order. also could the files with all the tracks be edited? reason for that i when you manually type in the info it is all caps which also drives me nuts.

OK. I just found this forum and I've been reading a lot. Wish I found it before I bought my Z1. I've had one for about 6 months.

What happened to this thread? From what I have read there has been only one person who swapped a hard drive and had it work!?

I've also gathered that he increased the music partition, but was limited to 1000 albums. That still sounds pretty damn good. Only about 250-300 fit on 10GB before I had to start deleting tracks.

Did he check the space left percentage after loading a number of albums?

I'm ready to start messing with the thing because 10GB is too small.

Theoretically you could be we haven't cracked the "playlist" files and how the directory is structured. You would need to edit the extra files the Z1 makes in order for it to see the files in the new order and we haven't been able to do that.

Welcome!

That is correct. I was one of the people who he sent his hard drive to and it didn't work in mine. His working replacement would not work reliably in my unit.

I haven't heard who has reached the limit yet. That stinks. The software maximum is 1000. I wasn't sure what the hard drive space limit was. If you are right and it's 300, then it's worth putting in a bigger drive (if you have more than 300 albums). I only have 3 loaded in there right now and they are all FIREHOUSE! :)

Feel free. We would love some new energy in this. Right now the only benefit to unlocking the drive is

1. Making a backup
2. Changing the boot image
3. Loading a few backgrounds

Actually I just checked my Z1 music library and it only took about 200 cds before I got to 99% full and had to start deleting tracks.

I also noticed that it would take 2 cds before a one percentage went down on the hard drive space screen. So 200 cds makes sense.

I now have 206 albums and 6% left (after I deleted a crap-load of tracks).

I also read in the manual that the maximum artists and albums you can register is 400 (pg 116). That doesn't seem to jibe with the 1000 number you guys saw.

I was thinking that it might be pulp_fiction's Z1 installation and not his actual unit is the reason why his swapped HDD works. Maybe his car or installation doesn't vibrate the Z1 and the HDD doesn't lockup.

That was my thought as well. I have an Aviator 4x4 which is not the smoothest ride in the world. But Pulp's vehicle was not a Town Car or something overly smooth. But with the fact that these drives are automotive use drives with a higher resistance to vibration and shock, it makes me think it's the replacement drives we were using. No one has bought an automotive drive and copied the stock drive to it.

A 30 gig laptop drive is not worth it to me. If they sold 80 gig and larger laptop drives which were rated for Automotive, and they were not prohibitively more expensive than standard ones, I would buy it and try it. I don't want to be stuck with a 30 gig drive that cost $160 (I think my last 120 gig laptop drive for my thinkpad was less) that I didn't have a use for.

That is on my to do list. Gotta let the wife know to erase all that other crap she keeps writing on that white board.

Gonna start tinkering around with this thing. Wish it wasn't so damn cold outside.

Dang those things (automotive HDDs) might be cost-prohibitive. I might practice on some regular ones before trying an automotive HDD.

That's what I thought... if they were anywhere close to the price of a normal drive I would try it. But they are very expensive for what you get.

Yes you are, as for the drives many of us have. They seem to lock up. There was one guy (Pulp Fiction I believe) who got a laptop drive to work in his Z1. Everyone else who tried one, had their Z1 lock up within 5 minutes of driving. So Pulp sent me his laptop drive that worked in his Z1 and it locked up in mine. Is his Z1 special? Is my truck extra bumpy? I tried many different drive copying tools, and many different laptop drives and none work in my Z1. I have even backed up my image on a spare drive, that didn't work, wiped out my stock drive and re-imaged it back to the stock drive and that has worked great for 6 months now. What's the difference? Automotive vs Laptop drives and vibration is the only thing I can think of.

Hey Guys,

This may be a long shot, and someone has probably already tried this, but ill throw it out there anway....

I recently bought an IPOD Nano 8 gig, and after installign it, it dawned on me, that the unit shows up as an actual "drive". I'm assuming that the IPOD Video 30 and 80 gig versions do the identical thing...can anyone confirm? I'm not sure what kidn of drives they use in the ipods (im assuming solid state drives), but regardless they are meant to take a lot of abuse, as far as motion, vibration, etc.

Do you think, a USB to IDE adapter can be used in place of the actual drives? I geuss until someone figures out how to manually dump music onto the drive, this may actually give you more space then the standard 10 gig to rip cd music....
