I believe the OS is embeded in flash memory, but just wondered if anyone had tried doing this....
anyone try cloning a Z2 drive and place it in a Z1?
Interesting if that means you can use the old bypass.
Well, some of the os is in the flash memory, but most is on the hard drive and changing the hard drives did change the bypass.
Maybe just to check, I should take my drive with the new bypass, reimage it back to the old, pre-bluetooth update and see if the bypass changes. If that works, get a hold of a Z2 drive and unlock it and do a diff on the files in there... what are the chances that I might be able to find the part which handles the bypass.
Either the update CD also flashes the flash memory and this doesn't work or the internal memory looks to the drive for info on the bypass. This might be something to pursue.
yeah
yeah
Thanks for the informative post. ![]()
i have both the z1 and z2 and have both drives unlocked now if you can help me on thelling me what files i can switch out we might have something
DB?! where are you? Answer this mans question so that we can see some potential progress.

You're going to have to run a comparison on both drives and see what files are different.

most of the files look to be the same they are just different size
My first attempt would be to copy each drive on to different folders on your desktop and do a compare like with http://winmerge.org/ or something. That free and works well. There are going to be a lot of differences. And just go through them one at a time and see if there is any difference.
The other possibility is to take the old Z1 and the new Z1 and do a compare on those and see what changes are made on the Z1 and if that is the same (or different) from the new Z1 to the Z2.
i tried using winmerge and its telling me it cannot compare binary files also all the files appear to be the same from the z1 to the z2 they are just diferent sizes not much difference in the name of each file
Well that's good that means that there are a lot of similarities. I thought winmerge would do binary files, just not graphically. It says the new version comes with a binary opener. Maybe we need another tool. But changes in sizes mean there is a change in the file. Maybe focus on the changes and see if there is any bypass related info in the files. Just a thought.
First step would be to take a pre-updated Z1 drive put into a post updated one and see if headlight flashing still works, that means the bypass can be reverted back to an old method. If we can figure out what changed with the Z1, we might be able to revert the Z2 to the Z1 bypass.
how about taking a Z2 drive and stick in Z1 unit ... i will try that monada just got Z2 in my store

That would also be an interesting test. And a Z1 drive in a Z2.
im in the middle of trying it and im also doin vice versa
ok guys heres the deal i swapped hard drives between the z1 and z2 if i have the z1 hard drive in my z2 i can watch tv while driving with the new bypass the moment i put the z2 hard drive in the z1 it updates i cannot watch tv so i put the z1 hard drive back in then it updated again or should i say downgraded and watching tv was possible again so now we know theres 1 file that needs to be switched or modified some how
interesting outcome.maybe we can all update our z1s to z2s with a hard drive clone then. That would definitely be worth saving 250$.
Well we can, but we need to make sure the one file responsible for the bypass should not be added to the Z1's.
We really need to find that file(s).
ant idea on where to look for it in what folder or what to look for
this also takes me back to the bluetooth update disc once people were updating thier z1 the flashing lights bypass did not work so when we used the new bypass it worked so the file we need to play with should be on the update disc as well i hope ths makes sense to you db
Oh it does, it's a change to the Z1 early to Z1 post bluetooth....
And something else to look for is the Z1 pre-june to the Z1 post june.
Anyone with a stock July through october (I would like September) with NO bluetooth update and the drive unlocked who would be willing to put it into a pc and work with me?
I think I might have access to both of these, but will take me a bit to do it.
Plug in the drive once unlocked and do a
dir /s > c:\driveX.txt
And do this in the command line in each of the drives that show up and change the X for the drive letter and that will give a text file. We can compare the sizes and dates of June 06 and before Z1's and July and later Z1's.
Then check the bluetooth update Z1's and see if there is anything in common.

which goes back to my original idea.... why don't you clone the Z2 drive and stick it in the Z1.....

It's an excellent idea and titos did it, and it killed his bypass on the Z1.
And he did a Z1 drive into a Z2 and the bypass worked with Z1 software in the Z2.
Which made me think we now want to know what changed so we might be able to make one file and fix this. ![]()

i usually use beyond compare..... this does binary comparisons as well.... there used to be a free trial version available for download.

I never used beyond compare but it came with my latest installation of clearcase... so I have that as well. I'll have to give it a shot.
