Grounding your parking brake wire with a switch and then doing something like watch a DVD and then moving will not work and will bring up a nag screen which will force you to reset your unit to factory new (with the front panel reset button) to get rid of it. It's the dreaded "your parking brake is not connected propery" message.
Removing the VSS wire won't help either. It will sense 10 mpg with the GPS antenna. If you get one of the relay setups on ebay that won't work either. The Z1 has internal accelerometers which eventually will sense motion and block what you are doing anyway.
You just want access to the menu options and not play DVD movies while driving or you want to watch these DVD's and videos on private property and off road and for shows right? Cause doing so on public highways is dangerous and illegal. Just so you know. So all this is for off road use only.
If you illumination wire is hooked up and if you are viewing the map, if you turn your headlights on and off, does the map go from daytime mode to night mode? If so, just flash you headlights when the unit boots up. Actually the procedure is in this post:

When you see that text screen during boot up,

That's all there is to it.
If you don't have auto headlights and will remember not to turn your headlights on for 10 seconds, you can get a single TR7 and program it to "flash your headlights for you". Or if you have auto headlights or don't want to have the limitation for the first 10 seconds, you need 2 tr7's wired up and programmed like in this post:

Or you can buy one of the circuits I sell, and install that. It will flash your lights for you and will handle auto headlights and everything.

So you have 3 options. If your illumination wire is installed correctly, you can just go to your car, start it and try it for yourself.
