I started this project a few weeks ago, but last night I made something out of wood. I figured I might as well post progress on here just in case anyone else with a full size Chevy might want to do something along these lines.

Eventually it will be wrapped in the vinyl that you can see in the third picture (its the closest match I could find). The wood one is different from the cardboard one because the mounting angle was too steep the first time.

wow that is awesome! I really hope you do keep us updated on the progress! :)

Looks good. Thought about doing something like that in my Dodge. I want to put a 12 or 15 in the center console.

I was thinking about doing a full console and doing that, but it would take too long for me. I've had the D3 sitting in my room for about 3 weeks now and I want it in haha. Later on I might get a small amp and put a set of components in there tho.

I wrapped the sides myself, but the top is proving to be more difficult....

Haha so much, but I honestly didn't even notice until I started making the console.

Hey, someone knows how to use a router.......nice job, man.....

Use a heat gun to soften up the vinyl as you lay it down, pulling any excess and wrinkles to an unnoticeable spot. Select Products http://www.sem.ws/

Posted Jul 13, 2007 · 03:45 UTC#15

Careful how much heat you use, if you go overboard, you will end up with permanent shiny spots, which is fine, if you REALLY like the Armor-All look. Oh, and vinyl is flammable.

Thanks for the tips. I was actually looking at the heat activated glue on select products the other day, I didn't even see that vinyl. I went to an upholstery guy around here, to see how they would do it, and he said it would be impossible to stretch that over the bends and that it would need to be seamed. He quoted me 150 bucks to do it. I think I'll give it a try with my 3 dollars worth of vinyl...

If you have a bit of patience and a decent heat gun, you can do this yourself. Try a few little pieces of the vinyl to get a feel for how it can be stretched and formed, and work your way from there.

Finally finished this project...

I ended up having the top done by someone. He seamed it, which I didn't think I was going to like, but it is growing on me. He only charged me 55 dollars too, which I guess isn't bad. I wanted to say that I did the whole thing myself, but I would rather have it look good.

I covered the sides myself, that was pretty easy. The drivers side was a little difficult because of the cut-outs I made for the 4WD shifter. After I bent that shifter, and pulled the center console, everything went in nicely. Even the wiring, because the old radio was right there, I just had to pull it under the dash.

Now I just need to make myself some backgrounds. And Im still having trouble locating a VSS wire. The stuff I found on Directwire isn't working. Thats for another day though...

Holy shit Steve that looks amazing! See what a little imagination can do! And don't worry about the seaming/stitching, reminds me of a Ford King Ranch edition truck :)

Great job. Seems look fine too.

VSS should be green with a white stripe at the instrument cluster harness. Not bad, padawan. A fine installer, should you make.

That does look good!!

you have plenty of clearance with the 4x4 shifter?

Thanks! I had to bend it at like a 45 degree angle, but after that it fits/works fine.
