Why didn't you try to mod the dash area, where the factory radio (1.5 DIN?) is? The place above the AC/controls.

I think the GMCs may have gone to the newer dash style a little earlier than the Chevys did. Mine had the little radio, not a regular din width. It was too narrow to fit anything in there.
