First off BIG THANKS to everyone on this fourm who has the patience, dedication and brain power to figure out how to do this and to help the noobs like me!!! Otherwise, I'd be paying the piper and that's no fun. ![]()
I bought my Z1 about a year ago, literally weeks before the Z2 came out. (Don't you hate it when that happens?) Everytime the Z1 can't find an address, or gives me the incorrect POI or leads me down the wrong street, as I'm pulling my hair and screaming at the top of my lungs I wonder if I would have suffered the same fate with the Z2.
So I've been reading up on this forum and I'm think I'm ready to make the upgrade. Here's what I've come up with so far (and feel free to chime in if I'm wrong). I'm going to buy a new harddrive vs. changing out the existing one. I'm leaning towards the Toshiba MK4019GAX 40GB. I figure I can find the torrent and reformat the drive. It sounds pretty straightforward. After I upgrade to the Z2, I'm going to update the firmware with the Z2 version at this link: http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PUSA/ ... e+Download
Is it that easy? I hope I'm not missing something.
If anyone in NYC wants to help me I also want to install the PAC-SWI, Bluetooth and rear camera. I'd be willing to take you to a nice Porterhouse steak at Lugar's or I'll pay you for the time. PM me. I'd also consider buying a harddrive that's already been reformatted. I know some people have thrown that option out there. That'll save me the trouble of searching and downloading the file. Big up Big up.
V1inM3, I just did the Z1 to Z2 upgrade today. I was also considering the same options that you described. I decided to do the following.
I looked on ebay and found someone who was selling the 40gig toshiba drives for $99 + $16 shipping for a $115 total.
The drive is pre-loaded with the Z2 maps and firmware and is fully unlocked. The Z1 won't lock the drive when powered up. That means that this is the only drive purchase that you (or I) will have to do.
The firmware and the gracenote database that were loaded on the drive were the next to newest update. So I burned 2 disks with the updates(1 with gracenote and one with Z2 firmware) and they loaded perfectly!
Doing it this way was so much easier than doing the drive myself. I'm sure that I could have done it, but this was so much easier and less time consuming.
Changing the drive out was a piece of cake! It couldn't have been easier.
Good luck with what you decide to do. If I can be any more help, just ask.
If you decide to buy one pre-loaded, I'll let you know the ebay ID that I got mine from. The guy had excellent communication and knew his stuff. He also shipped quickly and I had my drive in 2 days. ![]()

Sorry, I don't have a PW. The FTP server is hosted by BigFloppy. If anyone else out there has any space to host the image, let me know.
server appears to be functioning ok, just went on there and someone is currently downloading the D3 west disc
I used the ftp download link to attempt to download the 8 rar files from big floppy. I was able to download all but the last 3 rar files. It says the ip address for big floppy is no longer allowing downloads. Has anyone else had this problem? Just curious.
thanks
mike
I was able to unlock the stock drive with Repair Station. purchased with the discount ![]()
Disabled the Security Feature with MHDD with these commands:
MHDD\eid = To display settings
MHDD\config = to change settings. Press "y" to change settings. Press "Enter" to get to the Security setting. Press "y" to turn it off forever.
Press "Enter" once more.
Done.
Cycle the power on the drive and repeat the eid command to make sure it is off
You can do a test by doing a PWD command, it will tell you that Security is disabled on this drive.
I booted back in to the OS and ran an Analyze with Diskeeper on the 4 partitions. OMG they are very fragmented. I attached the reports.
I will play with Ghosting the Stock drive and restoring with Ghost. And fooling with the data. I'd rather not lose my Address Book and Destinations. I have been reading here alot so I think I'll have much success. ![]()

I have a question too, and sorry if this has been asked, I couldn't find it. I just bought a Z1, can I take an extra hard drive, put the image on it and go. Should I do the change security bit before putting the drive in? I will keep the Z1 drive as a spare. This forum is one reason I got the Z1 after seeing the community that goes with it.

Well thanks for the fast response, so looks like this may be very easy to do, can it be done on a mac or is this all windows based.

ok so i followed the directions to the letter, im using the drive that came with my z1 and after i updated it to the z2 image and put it back in the console it would not turn on.
now i drove around for a week with the hard drive out could this have damaged the deck?
could the image i downloaded be bad?
i even reverted back to the z1 with the backup image i made and no success.
the drive still works when plugged into a pc so the hdd isnt bad.
i hit the reset button on the deck and nothing happened.
this is so weird im am tech savvy and have no idea what could b wrong.
please help!!
i also noticed on the ze my music partition was called TFAT and when i upgraded to z2 it was renamed MSV.
also in the USER partition there were now folders labeled OLD_xxx for like to of the different folders in there? any ideas?
xxx = original folder name
I'm not that techically savvy but I've gotten 2.5 to 3.5 IDE adapter converter and a new HDD, so how exactly do I connect this new Toshiba hard drive "as the master drive on your secondary IDE channel using the IDE Hard Drive Adapter" When I connect onto the secondary IDE channel, the computer says there's no boot device available...
Luckily I'm using a spare computer for this ![]()
OK.. havent posted in like.. well a year... But I had some time and wanted to share some info for all...
I had the z2 image I download a while ago and did nothing with. I had an old Western Digital 120GB external USB drive... Model # WD1200
Didn't have a use for it... so I gave it a shot.. Downloaded Acronis disk, plugged the drive into the usb port and restored the Z2 image into it. Took apart the drive (easy) and unplugged the IDE/USB converter...Wha La! Drive....
Put it in my Z1.. went through 2 upgrading screens and has been working great. Didn't have to unlock anything, have the original z1 drive all intact.
I will update in a day or so and let everyone know.
I have a dumb simple question.
So after upgrading the Z1 to a Z2 (let's say with a new HDD), do I still have to do the ground bypass mod? Or is that taken care of in the Z2 image?
If this has been answered already please just link me.
Thanks,
Still have to do the 2-wire ground bypass. There is a sticky at the top of the page if you don't know how

OK... the drive quit.... Wasn't the heat as its only been in the 60's here.. Worked fine for about 4 hours and won't boot at all. put it back on the PC and its all still there but just hangs at the logo... HMMMMMM?????? Nothing wrong with the drive as a quick drive-check revealed a 100% Drive....
So.... Re-Imaged the drive using the same image... popped it back in.. Booted up perfect.... Don't know.... Drive Check built into the Avic???? Can't figure out why a simple re-image would allow it to work... Perhaps the Avic is writing a "do not accept" file on the drive???

Ever thought it could have been the 120GB Western Digital drive you imaged onto . . .?
Don't belive anyone runnin the Z2 image is using a WD Drive

Its definitely the drive, but why?? What's causing it?? The WD is indestructible and uses very little power.... It wasn't the vibration as I was sitting in a parking lot just idling when it shut down and wasn't the temp...And since it ran for a day first...The drive was 100% on 2 different scan progs......
OK... gave up and bought a Toshiba 60gig HD from newegg.... They have the MK6034gax for $53 and have a good supply of them!!!
I would be willing to help if anyone is interested in imaging their drive. Please PM me.
Thanks all!

would the two wire bypass work even if you didnt do any updates or upgrades. Because im no to sure if I want to do the bluetooth upgrade because of the chance of locking it up.
I assume you have Z1. No, the 2-wire bypass will not work unless you do the bluetooth update or update your HD to Z2 software
