Has anyone tried the ios8.3 beta to see if wireless CarPlay is supported by the 4100NEX?
Wireless CarPlay
I've been picking through the compiled 4100 firmware files, specifically PLATFORM/PJ140PLT.PRG with a text editor (TextWrangler) and there is some tidbits that might fuel your speculation. There is code about wifi/sofmac and then there is this:
i am running 8.3 beta and can say that carplay wireless does not work.i have the NEX8000...the response time and stability of carplay has improved significantly. you no longer have to unlock your phone to allow carplay to start on the unit..Bluetooth connectivity and sound is sharp and clear..they are improving just at a slow rate lol..

Any improvements to the Maps app in CarPlay? Does it now show current/max speed?

Just to be clear with everyone because I've seen this a few times said in different threads. Carplay does NOT use bluetooth. At all. Everything comes from the USB port. Wireless carplay may use the bluetooth but signs for that point more to wifi in the car which is why the NEX units cannot do it. The Alpine might, but it's unlikely.

Carplay uses bluetooth for phone calls
No. It goes through usb. Give it a try. Unpair your Bluetooth on your phone and turn off Bluetooth and erase your phone on your radio and then plug your phone into CarPlay. Once it's connected, make a call. Notice it still works. No Bluetooth. All from the usb direct connect.
Carplay uses bluetooth for phone calls
CarPlay Mode : Does not use bluetooth in any way, just as Dannyz3343 said ( and countless others). All audio and video is routed over the lightening/USB connection.
Siri Eyes Free Mode : Only uses bluetooth, is NOT connected physically in any way to the head unit. You lose CarPlay video on your screen, but siri still works along with a special "car mode" voice command set that is not active when Siri cant detect your head unit. Other Siri Eyes Free compatible apps work with Siri to provide additional information via voice only.
FYI...
iOS 8.3 was officially released today and with it the dawn of Wireless CarPlay for some.

iOS 8.3 was officially released today [for everyone] and with it the dawn of Wireless CarPlay [for some].
updating now. I will be testing in about 40 minutes when I leave the office.
where is the carplay settings on the phone?
Please report back!
where is the carplay settings on the phone?
My CarPlay setting didn't show up until I connected my phone to the head unit. Then, it was under Settings/General
Up it showed up then. There is no wireless option. Only option is to use CarPlay when iPhone is locked.
I am guessing that there needs to be a firmware upgrade to use wireless. I bet the x100 will get it but not the U.S. First gen.
Boo!

from what I've seen the NEX radios don't have the hardware (wifi) to be able to do wireless carplay.
Apple needs to fix the Bluetooth connectivity on the phones. I have an iPhone 6 and its a pain to get it to connect to my 2010 Ford Factory radio. Had no problems with previous OS versions. I too hope 8.3 fixes the Bluetooth issues. When I use the CarPlay in the car where the 6000NEX is installed I use the FireWire. No issues at all. Just wish there were more compatible apps. That will come me with time, and Pioneer needs to keep our units compatible with the newer OS and future CarPlay updates. I know...not a lot of faith there. Ha
I had the same problem forever. I finally bit the bullet and did a full restore without using a back up, which was what apple told me to do months ago. No bluetooth issues anymore with the car, with my garmin devices, or anything. So I suggest that.

so, the x100 won't have it either then? cause other than the screen, they are the same fraking unit.
found this on techcrunch talking about 8.3 beta. http://techcrunch.com/2015/02/09/ios-8-3-beta-arrives-with-wireless-carplay-support/
I wonder why that option isn't showing up to pair. I would figure that, even if it needed adhoc wifi that the NEX doesn't have, the option would be their to pair. Even though it will fail.
So the question is, why isn't there an option for wireless under carplay.
Honestly, nothing beats a good layer 1 connection. With a cable plugged in, things are more reliable and your iPhone's battery stays charged. I seriously can't help but wonder how much of a toll wireless CarPlay must be on an iPhone's battery.
It would be more convenient to have wireless carplay but....I'm happy with using the cable.
The only change I have found is CarPlay connection (via USB) while the iPhone is locked. Better than nothing, I guess.

Me too, just like I prefer Ethernet over Wi-Fi, latency is a bucket full of pain.

This is actually a significant change, some of us are required by Exchange policies to have a passcode and having to constantly unlock the phone every time you plugged it in was incredibly annoying.
